Transporting my freezer nicotine across the country
submitted over 2 years ago by adhdstruggles1

I am moving to the west coast and will have a 2 day drive. Does anyone have experience with this? Would it be better to buy dry ice and a cooler or to ship it overnight?

I have many bottles in my freezer. Any input is greatly appreciated!

I'd grab a cooler. A couple days at comfortable car temperatures isn't likely to make any real difference, but packing them in ice would likely be more than enough.

Dry ice sounds like overkill to me. A decent cooler filled with ice should be plenty enough for the timeframe you are dealing with. If you want to be extra careful, you can replace the ice on the second day of the trip.

I'm so glad people are telling me this! I was so worried!

Is it really going to be an issue if it thaws for a couple days?

No, as long as its not heated up or exposed to sunlight, it should be fine…afaik :)

Cooler and ice is all you need. The temperature change really won't make any difference at those low temperatures

If you have it in a box freezer just pack it with dry ice and tape the lid shut if this is not your option get a good cooler and pack it with dry ice and tape it shut you should be good for two days.

Cooler bag and a few frozen water bottles will stay frozen for the duration no problem

I’d suggest a cooler or styrofoam-insulated box with dry ice. Make sure the dry ice is on top. Dry ice is pretty common at grocery stores in my experience, so you can replenish on the road.

Not terribly expensive either... Our closest grocery store is 40 miles, so we use dry ice just for Ice cream lol.

You could use a simple cardboard box lined with a couple towels and dry ice. It sublimates, so no worry about messes :)

Yeah, definitely don’t want to risk it with water ice.

I just did the same a few months ago, I had two liters broken down into amber bottles and kept them in a big cooler with ice. I moved from SETX to the PNW and just refilled the cooler every night at a hotel

If using a cooler, pack it full of stuff and leave no air pockets. That means no space for air between the lid and your ice. This will keep everything colder for longer.

Glass bottles and bumpy roads are a recipe for disaster

not if you pack bottles with stuff between the bottles. Hell, my bottles came by UPS and in the box all they had separating them was cardstock. Not carbdboard, cardstock! None ever came broke in the 4 cases I bough. 3 of those cases were large 16oz bottles.

Ive had many broken in shipping, but breaking empty is not the issue that full of nic is.

There are also active coolers you can plug into your car and can also into normal outlet. Usually about the size of a normal cooler. They go down to normal fridge temperature. So no freezing but maybe interesting for cold drinks while on the drive.

This is great! I am going go get one and put freezer packs in with ice all layered around. This should prevent the ice from melting as quickly
