Im a pepper taster, full cream and strawberry mute, half berry blind, coconut taster and its a torture to find a decent flavor for me. I've got some workarounds and would like to help people have the same curse as me while quenching the curiosity of you good people. Ask Me Anything
Give Grack Juice on ATF a try. Id be surprised if you would taste the delightful weirdness of that one. It's good, but a bit weird. Highly recommended.
i did except the trash fa meringue giving me the burnt wick taste it was good. inw fruits are easy to taste and formulated really good imo also shoutout to the recipe owner because it was refreshing
It’s such a relief to hear someone else say this!! My palette sucks as well and I can’t taste much of any bakery flavors, creams, strawberry, raspberry, peach, etc. About 65% of the recipes on ATF just taste like air to me. It took awhile to figure out a way around it, but now I have 40-50 recipes that work really well for me. Thank you for making me feel like less of a oral anomaly!
i think our palettes dont suck and is just too sensitive, also since you don't really taste vaporized flavors and rather smell them unless you use an tastebud stimulant (eg: capella super sweet) a snotty throat or something similar would prevent you from tasting the vapor properly.
Had the same problem for a few years, a friend recommended I buy a tongue scraper and that worked huge to open up my pallet. I brush and scrape my tongue daily, with great results.
I’ve also noticed if I am not staying hydrated enough, flavours become muted and I cough more.
What is your best tip, aside from altering recipes and ingredients?
What a great post! I feel let down most times with bakery / cream / fruit recipes because they all pretty much taste the same. I wish I could taste these things that reviewers are tasting. I can't differentiate shit. Please share your secrets because I haven't figured out the best flavors for my dumb taste buds! Only thing I know is Shisha Strawberry is a good strawberry for me...
also try capella super sweet if you havent. i personally cant even taste and feel stuff properly without it being at least %0.25 and i started vaping with diy juices and not commercials. i think if the recipe is not cloying with it and takes the super sweet well, it benefits from it, pour that cap ss in the bottle but keep it under %1.5.
stay away from muters such as flavors loaded with EM or if you add it use it wisely to round out edges or something rather than trying to sweeten the recipe
try flv alpine strawberry to make the shisha way better and to get a real strawberry flavor. i have personally (again personally) did find out that already full tasting flavors make good recipes.
tfa graham crust cheesecake %4-%6 gives you an FULL and clear realistic cheesecake cream with bits of crushed wet crust. lacks the drier crisp crust tho, you can combine that tfa gccc with a Key lime concentrate that you like (something that is suitable to bakeries and not really full on fruity) and add a flavor that is gonna give the drier crust bits
i have tried, cap nycc: hayish air little dough no cream inw yes we cheesecake: mild cheesecake crust type of flavor that needs support @%1, more of it gives me a prominent coconut husk with a little coconutty cheesecake with no cream.
tfa one was my favorite but other cheesecake offerings can be tried too such as fw, fa
mix flavors that you buy as a single flavor and vape them. if they are unclear use them as accent notes to give mouthfeel or just dont use them. this helps creating recipes that are always tastable and strong.
honestly it is not about a secret. besides the small tip that i already gave. you just gotta try flavors. yes you lose money doing that but it is what it is. if its good you keep the flavor and try to use it. if its ok you try to use it in a secondary position in the recipe. if its bad you just dont use it. for example if i use fa meringue with "other flavors" the recipe turns into eggy burnt wick + "other flavors"
so i avoid it. but when i pass the mix to someone else, they say there is nothing unusual with it ,to me its burnt
You’re not alone . All custards that I’ve tried taste like crap , can’t use Fa meringue ( burnt wick Taste ) . Recently tried vt banana custard & that tasted like crap too . Still haven’t found a nice blackberry mint combination & still trying to make a nice blackberry mint combination . Lemonades are my go to , they seem to work best for me . I just avoid 99% of the bakery flavours out there . 1-2-3 Vic is something I can vape & so big thanks ID10-T for that gem
You're welcome! Have you tried adding anything to it?
try my cap off pg steeping method for custards and bakery, you will thank me later. i solved the burnt wick note / off note problems like that
open up your e juice calculator
add pg and flavors to the bottle mix the pg with flavors well let the mix breathe for 1-4 days (remember flavors gonna lose some of their potency) after that; add your vg nic and shake all of the juice then steep it normally or shake and vape it
tfa bavarian cream 3days cap off with this method is bavarian cream if cap was on it was full on burnt wick for me same for the fa meringue but i recommend 4days for it
try to tweak the cap off steep/normal steep day count to your preference to find the sweet spot that flavors just lose their off notes with minimal potency loss
recipe tweaking and experimentation may be needed using this method due to flavors getting bit more smoother and weaker when cap off steeped
but solved my burnt wick / unclear taste issues
I suspect I'm somewhat mute to creams as well - do you get any texture/mouthfeel from them? Thats 90% of my custards and creams experience, sometimes a bit of that popcorn butter flavor if its a really high percentage. Strawberry I can usually taste for all of 10 minutes with a recipe and then poof, it's gone.
What are some of your go-to profiles that you feel you can really taste fully? Any recipes you suggest for the taste-impaired out there?
i get the mouthfeel pretty much from anything. its the taste and smell that im challenged on. either creams taste kinda burnt and weird or too deep and cloying (even supposedly light flavors) or they taste like air)
the best thing i can recommend is building recipes with flavors that can stand on their own and if not using flawless flavors to build your recipes.
here is a recipe i can fully taste:
capella double apple %4 capella cinnamon danish swirl %6 capella super sweet 0.5%
taste notes for the flavors: cap double apple is a %80 bright fresh green apples mixed with non overripe red apples. And it is %20 syrupy. also the moistness this flavor is ultra versatile for bright fruity bakeries or juicy fruity mixes. i just recommend you to avoid putting this apple flavor into really dark caramels (i personally hate overwhelming dark deep juices so idc anyways) this flavor is not on the perfect level of sweetness so it allows you to adjust the recipes sweetness yourself and is on the versatile side.
cap cds is a nice ultra buttery creamy bakery with mild doughyness and is soft has no overly prominent crust so it allows you to add the crust yourself or either leave it. ultra versatile full flavor that can be used as a single flavor @ around %8 with some sweetener. has a generic tamed really easy going cinnamon note if you are not overlysensitive to harsh flavors. no off notes in this besides the mild metallic note ppl talking about but i think metallic note is not off putting and is a part of the flavor and it does not disturb the profile in anyways.
cap super sweet: hides problems if there any, homogenizes the flavors, makes your tongue properly taste the flavors, enhanced the mix, adds the lacking sweetness to non sweet flavors/mixes and makes everything pop.
cds lack a crusty side so any crispy/crusty flavor or even acetyl pyrazine would help it. but i think this recipe already tastes full and on your face.
i like tfa van custard it has that little popcorn butter type of off note but i love that thing its not really an off note. but i cant say that i taste that flavor to its peak potential
heres is some of my personal notes on popular flavors:
tfa bav cream: caramelish undertones and burnt wick note, rest of it is air with an creamy mouthfeel tfa greek yogurt: tart air with creamy mouthfeel cap vanilla custard: trash before 40days of steeping. not worth to wait 1 months to develop a test recipe with it unless youre the biggest custard fan. otherwise might be tasty. fa meringue: eggy burnt wick cap lemon meringue pie: burnt cookies/caramel(?) with heavy burnt notes, ok kind of lemon that needs more brightness
try subbing flavors, if that doesnt work; try subbing profiles. try to find a custard like ice cream flavor if you werent able to find an custard concentrate that your palate likes and evolve it to an custard yourself.

also read the notes on this recipe. tfa energy drink is for example is a grape candy flavor and not a energy drink. you can always use flavors for different purposes than their names suggest.
also you can try using flavir off notes in useful ways. if a cream tastes like coconut to you try using that on a coconut based recipe. im not saying its gonna be good or bad. its hard to describe or assume things that has to do with the ''taste'' factor you just gotta try.
also try lower percentages on flavors you get off notes.
inw ywcc @%3 : lovely coconut husk with bit of its milk with slight burnt off notes
inw ywcc @%1 : cheesecakeish weak kind of flavor with slight burnt off notes but workable and on profile compared to it at %3
A lil Rasberry (FA) and Lemons help strawberries as does WF Strawberry gummy candy for fading issues but Strawberry I normally stack up Cap strawberry Ripe 5% Cap strawberry sweet 5% And Inw shisha strawberry 3% or replace with FA Red touch.Couple drops WS23 and 2-3% Fa lemon slicey for a lil sour note
So happy to see this post. Anything with cream just tastes like how an old biscuit tin smells like.
Tobaccos do it for me tho. I really like cardinal (will post links later) and stuff with Amphor and FLV Virginia
