Whiskey was my drink of choice. I'm 15 months sober now, but whiskey is fucking delicious. Scotch was my favorite.
Whiskey was my favorite too. Congratulations on getting and staying sober!
Thank you so much! I struggled with alcohol abuse for over a decade. Some people can drink in moderation and some can't. I'm unfortunately one of those who can't. This way of life is so much better for me. I've lost 60lbs and started building muscle. My mind and body feel so much better now!
Congratulations on sobriety brother! And aswell I must say that fitness and building muscle is probably one of the most rewarding hobbies. Keep it up and be proud of yourself 💪💪💪
For juice? Try 5 Pawns - Gambit. If you can't find it there are a couple of ok'ish DIY recipes. They speak of an apple pie, but I got something alcohol in it, in fact our country produces an apple pie moonshine. Place a whiskey next to it? Sure. Heaven.
And also 5 Pawns - Castle Long.
I made Cardinal, by Fear - https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/24962#cardinal_by_fear
That should blend perfectly as well. The closest I could find to licking a dirty ashtray. Marvelous.
Also, this guy knows his stuff, this was as good, and uses Kentucky Bourbon as a flavour, what is not to like - https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/108011#retaliatory_tariffs_by_id10_t
I can't exactly remember how it tasted, but it is in my shortlist to make again.
On the whskey side, my stock favourite is Bushmills. And because of the amounts consumed I choose not to go the expensive side, so Grants follow. And of course I distill, I make my own brandy.
Thanks for such a great response. Man I really gotta get my hands on the Holy Grail RY4 so I can mix up Fears Cardinal because I have just heard so much about it.
Both Kentucky blend and Red Burley are incredible aswell, but I gotta pick up that Holy Grail! It's on my next order list.
I have been looking at lowland Scotch for my next whiskey purchase which some have been described as an apple pie flavour interestingly enough. It has hints of apple, and a high emphasis on bakery notes.
Scotch. My dad taught me how to drink it, and we try to have a facetime glass once or twice a month. Since started also learning different bourbons, I like the difference in flavor profiles and its fun to learn new ones
It can be such a great way to spend time with people. That's a great ritual you guys share!
Do you have a particular region preference for your Scotchs? I'm new to scotch to be honest and started with bourbon and Irish whiskey, and apparently scotch is a whole world in if itself within whiskey with all the region and flavour complexities.
Peaty single malts are my favourite.
Jura Prophesy and Talisker are my go to whiskys.
A group of mates and I got my friend a bottle of Cragganmore scotch as a wedding present for his stag. He of course insisted we drank some before going out.. and when I tell you it was peaty I mean it WAS PEATY. Cask strength, peaty, dense whiskey. It was an experience for sure!
I love Bourbon. My favorite when I did vape was tfa ry4 0.5% and a mixture similar to the blackout combo above with Bavarian cream and hazel nut. Tfa ry4 at 1% on its own is great as a savory vape but people love to jazz it up and I like having creams for the texture.
Although I love all whiskey Irish is my go to. Specifically I’ll usually get either Tullamore Dew or Proper 12 as they’re both affordable and delicious.
Japan has started cranking out whiskeys and I’m curious to try one but the cheapest I’ve found at the stores near me is about $50 for a 5th. Next time I feel like splurging I’ll probably try one and hope for the best.
I love Irish whiskey aswell, I'm currently enjoying Writers Tears copper pot. It's amazing. Im from Ireland aswell and it's made in my neighboring county!
Japanese whiskeys are incredibly expensive but from what I have tried (Hibiki) it really brilliantly combined elements of a bourbon with some elements of a scotch. I'm not sure if that is the case for Japanese whiskey as a whole, but the Hibiki has the mildest peat and smoke note but forefront and centre is Oak and Honey. Really nice whiskey!
Best one I’ve tried personally is Macallan 18 year, purchased a bottle when I closed on my house.
I enjoy most whiskies outside of the peaty scotches, those just taste like bandaids to me.
I wouldn’t consider myself an expert on pairing, or even whisky in general, but I can’t think of a good smoked meat brisket, pulled pork, or even chicken thighs that doesn’t pair well with a decent whisky.
I also haven’t tried any DIY recipes, however the vape shop I used to go to had a whisky recipe I really liked it was similar to an old fashioned in vape form.
I’d be willing to bet a nice whisky vape with some kind of vanilla and ry4 flavoring would pair up really well.
What does it have to do with this sub though
I noticed a parallel between whiskey tasting and creating recipes for eliquid. Mixing requires being in tune with your palate and being analytical about what you are experiencing.
Aswell as that some flavour compounds found in whiskey are also found in flavourings that we use to mix.. Acetoin for example.
