My husband is a mtl vaper using 20mg nic salt. He recently made his own ejuice but likes it ridiculously sweet. Unfortunately this means when he vapes it, he kills his coil in less than a day.
He only started vaping two weeks ago using the likes of elf bars which are really sweet. I have no idea what to do to keep his ejuice very sweet but not ruin coils so fast. He can go through two elf bars a day which is pretty much what he paid when he was smoking so he really wants to make his own ejuice and save money. Anyone help?
Unfortunately it is a simple fact of the industry that sweeteners kill coils. They leave more residue on the coil which then burns when the coil heats up.
I could maybe suggest getting him to try other recipes, that are more flavour and not sweetener oriented. For example, does he like Tobacco flavours? Usually they do not tend to be very sweet and so that can help. To my knowledge there are no sweeteners that do not cause this problem.
To save money he could get into rebuildables, like an rta or maybe an rba. That way he could change the wick/cotton daily if needed and it'd cost almost nothing, just a little bit of time. Otherwise if he insists on sweetener, not much can be done. Maybe try using less, but it'll still gunk up the coil.
Hi. Definitely look into RTAs. They are available for MTL as well as DL. You can buy prewrapped coils for them, they are cheap, like 10 for 5$ and cheaper. You can reuse the coils by cleaning them and adding fresh cotton. Join us on Discord if you need sorting through the options.
And just how much of which sweetener did he add? Would be good to know so that we can give you some alternatives.
I can build coils etc, so I can teach him. I ran a vape shop for seven years. He uses 5% super sweet, I don’t know how he can do it but he says that’s how sweet the disposable bars are! I think I will talk to him about swapping to fw sweetener and gradually decreasing it down. Thanks!
Oh my, that’s a bunch. In comparison, most commercial eliquid uses around 2% (Jam Monster). And they mostly do that to cover up any off-notes from overflavoring. He can go down slowly, just like most of us do with nic. That’s the great thing about DIY. You can decrease by 0.1-0.2% at a time and it isn’t even noticeable. You can buy really good wire or premade coils from WireOptim, they’re US-based and ship basically everywhere. And since you can build, definitely go that route. What matters is that your husband took that first step and has stopped smoking! It took my wife 6 months to transition, during that time she smoked and vaped, now it’s only vaping at 6 mg MTL. If you aren’t US-based let me know, I‘m in Europe and can also help with vendors there.
As someone who doesnt use any sweeteners in my juice, simply because it does destroy coils, i would suggest increasing overall flavors (i.e. if u use say 15%, go to 20 or even up to 30%), as most flavors have a natual sweetness to it. Otherwise, RDA as others suggested would work best for him
Of all the sweeteners available to us, FW Sweetener will likely yield the best results. At 1%, should almost be sweet enough for someone with a sweet tooth, and experience a bit better coil life compared to commercial juice or using the same amount of CAP Super Sweet.
After that just start dialing back the sweetener by 0.25% every few bottles until you hit 0.5% total sweetener for the mix.
If the juice being sweet keeps them from smoking you just have to go along with it for a while until they adjust to less sweetener.
It takes time to ween off commercial (read: overly sweetened) juice for some people. Certain flavors can really amp up the sweetness without tons of actual sweetener, fruits especially.
Convince him to lower the sweetener -- CAP Super Sweet I assume? -- in recipes. I know for me anyway when I made the switch I kept sweetener very low based on reading this sub and I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't need it. And I was vaping shit like Candy King that's overly sweet even by commercial juice standards. I do a few drops of SS in a 60mL bottle and it is always more than enough. TL;DR tell him to stop dumping so much sweet in and just try less.
