Mixed opinions on Ethyl Maltol
submitted about 3 years ago by denisTenis

I've recently got into DIY and I'm trying to achieve that "commercial e-liquid". What I mean by that is I like very sweet juice, but sucralose alone doesn't do it for me, it's not the same kind of sweetness as in commercial juices, so I looked into ethyl maltol. Some say they mute flavors and others say they are superb to enhance flavors. What are your opinions on Ethyl Maltol?

Ethyl Maltol is not a sweetener. It gives the illusion of sweetness and can mute flavors.

Try FW Sweetener and TFA Super Sweetener

EM is for sugar flavors and not a sweetener. Its usefulness is very limited.

Cap SS between 0.25% and 1% is a nearly ideal sweetener because it includes some water content and the appropriate preservatives for stability. It's a major shortcut for mixing.

If that's not good enough then you might consider other sweeteners in such as Erythritol or Monkfruit in addition to that certain amount of sucralose.

That being said, it's probably better to just get over it. Nobody vapes that commercial crap once they have access to the better stuff at home.

Cap SS also contains citric acid

Not sure if I'm ok with that

I know what you mean but it's ubiquitous because it works.

Obv you do you, but I find that a drop of capella super sweet per ~10mL is more than enough, especially if the flavors I'm using have their own sweetness.

EM isn't really my thing, tbh.

Cap super sweet is the move for sweetener

Once you go Cap Super Sweet you never go back to any other sweetener.

I disagree with you. The purilum super sweet actually tastes less like artificial sweetener and more like sugar. Yeah I started with cap, but when I found perilum I stopped using CAP. BCV has it in USA. TRY IT!

I've never tried Purilum Super Sweet. Looking at the flavor list on ELR super sweet is the most popular Purlium "flavor" by a large margin. It gets a lot of good reviews.

Sounds like I need to add Purilum Super Sweet to my shopping list.

It’s all I’ve been using for a long time. I tried ethyl maltol and didn’t like it at all.

I used to use it but now I usually don't use any sweetener at all. The only sweetener I consider using these days is monk fruit extract for fruit flavors.

Any extract in particular? Asking because even the non-bitter variant of stevia proved difficult to source here in Canada.

I use Nude Nicotine's so I'm not sure that will help with you being located in Canada. I used to buy my nicotine base there and picked up a bottle of the Monk Fruit Extract. It helps sweeten fruit flavors in a way that doesn't make it taste like candy though.

Figured, there was only the one place I found and they either didn't ship here or shipping was multiple times the cost of what I wanted.

I can say for sure I'm pretty sick of this hollow styrofoam feel that sucralose (0.25% ss or 0.5% fw) leaves in my mouth, one that I never got from even too sweet commercial juices. Monk fruit extract and erythritol are the last loners I've left to test.

Rick's sugar mama (sucralose and em/m free) is close to what I'm looking for though it really pops when heated and also not available here through a vendor.

I don't stick to one sweetener. I use EM, FW Sweetener, FLV Sweetness, and Rick's Sugar Daddy quite often. Which one I choose depends on the recipe I'm working on.
