Is PG a necessity?
submitted about 3 years ago by tryce233

Looking to start making juice to put in a caliburn. I have a bunch of VG from an unrelated project, and Salt Nic that’s 250mg/ml in PG. Would I be ok to mix just those two (and menthol crystals), or would it do something funny in the caliburn? And will I want more flavor than just menthol crystals?

Thank you and sorry—I’m very uninformed about the whole DIY process

For the caliburn, yes PG is a necessity. Caliburn will perform best with some PG. I usually use around 60VG/40PG.

will be too thick to vape in a caliburn, PG carries the flavor VG is clouds

My caliburn burns coils in just a few hits with anything that has over 50% vg...

I've been using the caliburn and caliburn G since they came out at 30% PG base solution with no issues. My Nic is in VG but flavors in PG so it's probably closer to 35% PG in final solutions, but my coils last through about 40 refills unless I accidentally run them low.

No experience with a caliburn, but I will say, if you're going near 100% VG, you'll want to let it steep for an extra week or two at least. VG is a lot less viscous and it will take more time to mix. You might want to stir/shake it up once a day to help too.

Big difference is steeping times even if you normally do 10% PG

I’ve never used the caliburn but I’ve used 100% vg. Look up aqueous vg online. It’s essentially vg mixed with up to 20% distilled water. Instead of buying that and replacing ph with it, I tried just adding 5% of my mix as distilled water to thin it and it worked just fine in my Zeus tank. Figured 30% of 20% being water would work just fine as 5% total mix.

If your flavoring is pg, you may want to put less distilled water in. I used vg based flavoring though.

To explain why, I was testing whether my eczema issues were being caused by pg. Thankfully it seems it wasn’t. But it was a fun (though less flavorful) experience.

Pg is cheap and carries flavor better than vg, why wouldn't you use it?

Max VG (99%+) is like molasses. You can vape it in an RDA, but thats pretty much it.

I personally run with 0 pg only about 3% flavour in a nord2 atm i would say give it a go i have very few issues and coils last at minimum a week

I used to just mix VG with nic in 50pg/50vg so I wouldn't have to buy PG. But that was for a dripper, for a caliburn you definitely need PG.

My perfect Caliburn ratio is 38PG/62VG.

Hi. Yes you‘ll need PG. Firstly to dissolve your menthol crystals in (they‘re not easy to dissolve and they tend to fall out of solution at cooler temps, they don’t really dissolve in VG), secondly, you need to thin out your VG for MTL and pod systems. 50/50 or 60/40 would both work well. If you don’t thin it out, your cotton will burn faster (dry hits). If you chain vape, I‘d choose 50/50 so that the cotton can wick faster. Don’t add water or vodka to your mix. That’s really old school and totally unnecessary. PG is also the flavor carrier in your mix and it’s something you‘ll want for pods.

Is that VG from previous projects USP pharmaceutical grade? Was it stored airtight and in a cool dark place? It can go bad if exposed to sunlight, heat sources and over time as well. It should be odorless and clear and have a slightly sweet taste to,it, nothing else.

Concerning flavor, some vapers vape straight VG/PG mixes, some plain old menthol. If you love Menthol, fruits like dark berries go pretty well with it. It would be best to choose a few pod recipes for that though. Why not come and join us on our Discord? We can help you get setup and answer any questions you may have about vaping/mixing. Good luck.

Thank you for the detailed response! Joining the discord now. The VG is USP and was stored in a cool dark place. Will order some PG
