Yes there is some evidence that sucralose breaks down at vaping temperatures.
Is sweetener necessary for DIY? That will depend on who you ask. Some people don't use it at all, some mix everything with at least a little.
Is it absolutely required? No, the liquid is still fine to vape without it, but it won't taste the same.
The only reason why is because of the sucralose content. Usually most people that DIY want to rid themselves from sweetener in commercial juice by removing it completely for safety reasons and saving their coils. This is an ingredient that is normally avoided but it’s personal preference to use it in mixes that just don’t vape right. So if you feel the sucralose makes your juice enjoyable then add it if you wish. But for me, I avoid it every chance I get unless a recipe is missing something, like a sweetener. 0.25% is fine IMO and in time, hopefully you will take CAP Super Sweet out of all your recipes
I rarely use it, it's not necessary for diy and not even necessary for some commercial juices. Some companies make juice they don't add sweetener to. Another consideration is that along with vg being inherently a little sweet, some flavorings have sweetener or ethyl maltol in them already. So no added sweetener may not mean 0 sweetener. There are other sweeteners out there, erythritol is one that's not sucralose. It's more heat tolerant. I find too much sweetener annoying personally and for me 1% is too much. I find in many mixes 4-6 drops in 120ml is pushing it for 'too much' to my taste. Ie I'll stick to 3-5 drops, 6 is borderline and 8 drops or more is too sweet. Which 3-4 drops to 1g roughly and if going by 1g/ml it's clearly well under 1%. Maybe 0.25 to 0.5% tops.
You can first try a recipe with the CAP SS, then mix one with other sweeteners to see, if they do match the original taste. Sweeteners of choice: FW, FLV, TPA sweetener, all sorts of marshmallows, donuts, etc., EM, Vanillin, and so on.. ;-) It's no easy task but it's the only way: make more batches of 1 recipe with several sweeteners, I'd also test again after 3, 6,... months of steeping, just because really many recipes are made for the moment, or to be consumed within the first months. I hate this! (as I try recipes over a year in my huge 100+ recipe-rotation (+ very rarely some commercial liquids I have to buy because of dirty sale prices, which I can't resist).
Sweetener in recipes is always optional and not really a part of the recipe. You can add it or omit it, it’s up to you, your taste preference and depends on how far you want to go with harm reduction. Just know that sweetener is the stuff that gunks up your coils and turns into that black crusty coil gunk. If you want your coils to last longer, stock coils that is, use as little or no sweetener.
Sweeteners aren't required. Some like them some don't. If I use sweeteners it's generally between .25% and .5%, especially if it is CAP Super Sweet. If you choose to use them just remember you can always add more if your recipe comes out not sweet enough, but you can't take it out if it is too sweet. Start with none, then add in small increments (around .25%) if you feel it's needed. Also, not all sweeteners are the same. The percentage you use for one may not be the same for another. In my opinion CAP super sweet is the sweetest of all I have tried, and if you add too much it is sickeningly sweet.
For real.. this IZ THE SHIT!! If you're like me and essentially started making your own flavors for the purpose of them being almost as sweet as literal candy.. then my friend, you have the most important part of ANY recipe.
It literally doesn't matter what recipe you choose, if you just ad like the recommended 5-10(whatever unit of measurement) into said recipe, it automatically makes it a banger from the jump and is full of intense sweet flavor to enhance whatever other flavors make up the recipe as opposed to having to wait for the recipe to somewhat "mature" or "steep" until the sweetness is released over time...
I'm impatient af Soo the "Capella Super Sweet" is literally a cornerstone for me and I just put it in any juice I make as if it where a required amount of VG or PG hahah..
But not everyone is down with such a full-flavored and intense sweetness to their preferred juice.. BUT if you DO like a sweet as tits juice... This is a Most Definite Must have...
Enjoy. Safe Vaping ✌️🙏
I really wanna get it, as a lot of recipes I wanna follow include it, but I read that it’s really bad for you, so I’m worried lol.
I'm on my second batch of DIY juice and I omitted the sweetener. My coils are still shiny and cotton is not black after 2 days.
THIS!! Not having to rebuild/replace every week is great. If I wanted to I could go months without even re-wicking because without sweeteners the juice vaporizes so much cleaner.
It's diy. If you want it, get it. I use sweetener in some recipes and don't in others. It's totally up to you what you want to do. We're not doctors but to me a bit of sucralose is safer than cigarettes so if it's keeping me off cigarettes and keeps me enjoying the hobby I'll keep using it when I see fit.
It's not the sucralose in Super Sweet that may be dangerous to vape - it's the combination of 2 other ingredients/preservatives.
Super Sweet contains 20% sucralose and the following other ingredients/preservatives:
- Citric Acid which makes fruits pop, is primarily used as a food preservative, E330.
- Sodium Citrate (the sodium salt from citric acid) which tastes salty and sour. Usually used for its flavor or as a preservative E331.
- Potassium Sorbate which is the potassium salt of sorbic acid that is primarily used as a food preservative, E202.
- Sodium Benzoate which is the sodium salt of benzoic acid (often used to convert Freebase Nicotine into Nic Salts). Sodium Benzoate is primarily used as a food preservative, E221.
Each of these preservatives on their own are okay in tiny amounts (0.1 percent by weight in food, and 5 parts per billion in drinks). But when Sodium Benzoate and Citric Acid and/or Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) get together in the bloodstream they form Benzene which is a cancer-causing chemical associated with Leukemia and other blood cancers.
So anyone who vapes nic salts and ads a bit of citric acid to make their fruit recipes pop is basically taking the same risk as people using Super Sweet.
Because Super Sweet is, well super sweet, it's only used in small amounts.
Personally I always add 0.5% Super Sweet to my recipes because apart from sweetening it also doesn't gunk up coils like other sweeteners do.
