Deep Fried Sugared Taro -
ACCURACY : 🔴 🔴 🔴 🔴 ⚪ VERY CLOSE TO EXPECTATIONS
🔹 Flavor Description 🔹
I must mention going into this review, I have never eaten taro, so I have nothing to compare the taro flavor against in this flavoring other than how I understand others to perceive it. With that being said, I perceive this flavor to be straight up candied sweet potatoes or yams. I have been looking for a good sweet potato flavoring for quite some time. I have used FLV Yam and it was utterly disgusting to me. If you want mushrooms go with FLV Yam, if you want candied Yams/sweet potatoes, this is it. It has an amazing sweet potato pie filling flavor that I have been looking for. You can taste the candied yams just swimming in buttery brown sugar and the deep fried note is almost working as a crust for me. It could use a little help in that department to boost the crust note, but I'd be perfectly fine vaping this as a one shot @ 2% or with a little WF Whipping cream (fresh). The dominant flavor in this concentrate is the taro/sweet potato and it will overtake a recipe if you go to high with it. The buttered brown sugar note is extremely accurate and it brings back memories of thanksgivings past when we would have candied yams as a side during our feast. I find the sweet spot for this concentrate to be right around 1-1.75% in a mix. I have taken it up to 2.5% solo and it was still accurate to the profile, but the taro gets to be a bit too forward for my liking. I get a full mouth feel and a full flavored vape from this one under 2%. Its a fairly complex flavor, there is a lot going on that I cant fully describe being that I've never eaten actual taro.
The possibilities with this concentrate are very exciting. Using this in a pie, pudding, in a boba tea, with a pancake, in a shake, and the list goes on. I would run out of my 10ml bottle of this concentrate before I get through all the flavor pairings I would like to try out. I find this flavor inspiring me to go outside of my comfort zone and push the envelope and try for new flavor profiles that could come from it.
🔹 Comments 🔹
I purchased this concentrate from Bull City Flavors. I do know Chefs carries it now as well.
Suggested usage range is between 1% - 2.5%
Pairings: Coconut, Vanilla, milk, sweet rice, pudding, ice cream, marshmallow, brown sugar, pancake, cake, pie, custard, butter, cookie, coffee, granola, nougat, crumble topping, orange, apple, walnut, muffin, cinnamon, maple syrup, honey.
I could go on and on, but I am confident this flavoring will offer many unique recipes in the future. Outside of it being a bit of a bully in a mix, I dont have anything negative to offer about this flavoring.
All testing was done on a Mongrel, Single coil quad core fused clapton 30/40g 316L SS 4mm ID 8 wraps ohming out at 0.46ohm vaping between 70-78 watts
now THIS is flavor reviewing, lots of pictures for my small and ape-like brain. dfst sounds absolutely amazing, ill probably buy a 30ml come autumn and go absolutely hogwild with yam everything until i never want to vape it again. bet it would destroy minds with some bourbon and toasted marshmallow.
Now we're talking. Some aged Bourbon Cream ;) Toasted marshmallow sounds like a great idea too! A little FLV caramel to really bring that brown sugar home
It's delicious. I have ooo sweet potato too and while it has its uses it's just straight sort of sweet potato. It's not as enjoyable as WFs version.
Nice review. I got an email yesterday Chef’s now carrying this
Made it sound too good. I ran outta fuji yesterday and knew there was no way this wasnt going in the cart also! Will give my thoughts on WF Gulab Jamun (indian fried doughnut balls) when my flavors arrive. Thank you!
That Gulab Jamun is one of the few WF I dont have. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it. Only thing that I heard about it was it tastes like Old Man Breath and I never ordered it after that. lol
Not a shining endorsement haha. well, I guess it depends on the old man. I'll see what I get from it at 2%. If it tastes like I think it will, I'll hit it with a splash of joy and possibly good around with cinnamon danish. Maybe joy and meringue to get that powdered sugar doughnut vibe.
just mixed 2% and right off the bat, I do actually get a fair amount of floral notes. Nothing crazy, but the rose water is definitely there. Little hint of fried bread, some sugar on the outside. absolutely no syrup. I'm gonna try bumping it up and see what else is there because as a shake and vape this is pretty much rose water with a dash of churro
taro is one of my favorite flavors/ things EVER, I cannot wait to try this out. thank you for the writeup + for the further confirmation that I need to try this one!
u/hesherette yeah you gotta try this one. It is a must have for me. I think you'll really enjoy this. Its a very complete flavor, I find it satisfying as a solo flavor but it has a lot of potential to add a new tool that we didn't have before this was released. Its unlike any other flavor I own
yeah that is very exciting to hear + I'm so happy WF finally made a good Taro flavor! they have become one of my favorite flavor houses in general with their past few years of mostly good releases. You gotta try a Taro boba/ milk tea or get some Taro mochi soon + then report back if the WF DST is authentically taro or not. even if it's not it still sounds delicious; from your report it sounds pretty spot on though!
I think WF is trying to emulate a chinese recipe like this: https://www.unfamiliarchina.com/dim-sum/deep-fried-cakes/fried-sugar-taro
