FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How'd you get your handle?

my favorite thing in the world when i was but a wee sorcerer was stupid xbox live tags like "a fat dog", "a ninja", etc., and wizards are freaking rad, but im pretty self-deprecating.

How long have you been mixing for?

may 1 is the first anniversary of my first flavor order, but ive been aware of and researching diy since i quit cigarettes via vaping in early 2018 thanks to a fortuitous mixer acquaintance who taught me that diketones are our friend, along with completely ruining any chance i had at enjoying commercial vape juice after he moved.

MTL or DTL?

hot and relatively airy big dual coil dtl is the only satisfying way to vape, for me. mtl feels like trying to drive a nail with a hairbrush. no offense, borobros.

Current flavor or profile obsession?

yeesh, all of them. ive never really had a specific flavor preference, outside of having a necessity for at least 100ml of some form of custard available at all times. i get very bored of the same profile very fast, i like to call it "flavor adhd". if anything is my preference, its out of the ordinary or downright goofy mixes and flavor combinations that showcase some unique sense of the mixers creativity and skill. well, and licorice.

Most/Least disappointing flavors that was/not as expected? Secret Weapon?

where the hell do i start. ive got a lot of stupid problems with a lot of stupid flavors, and i am discovering all the time new flavors that do not taste to me like they do to everyone else. inawera is so far the worst offender, as their custard tastes like some strangely bilesome warmed cream, yes we cheesecake is about 65-75% creamy coconut flavor if i use it over 2%, and biscuit is strangely sharp at any percentage unless buried with cream and, again, tastes like coconut. tpa graham cracker crust is coconut. fw graham cracker leans coconut. cap sugar cookie is just warm air.

the first few months of mixing were brutal. ive learned now how to replace them and mix without them, but it still makes me sad thinking about how many highly reviewed and personally recommended mixes i tried (custard now :'( ) that just tasted downright awful. but hey! at least im not a strawberry mute. as for a secret weapon, when in doubt, custard premium. it salves the soul.

Mixing Milestone?

i mean, i dont feel like ive accomplished really anything in my mixing career, outside of a 5 star review from the almighty spdrjrslm himself. i guess the first time i SFTd a bunch of newly released flavors felt pretty significant personally, sort of a signal that this wasnt just another random hyperfixation id get bored of and reduce my involvement to bare minimum, which is huge to me.

Recipes you admire/love?

lychee blossom was the first mix i made multiple times, and to me its a masterpiece in layering and semi-abstract vapes and creative flavor use. its cap sweet lychee if it was ten times better. the red touch is my favorite part, and it inspired me to throw honeysuckle around willy nilly. ill probably mix some of it after i finish writing this. everything about it is perfect, there isnt a single thing i would change besides omitting sweetener. please go mix it.

White whale?

i had just started vaping and went on my first date with my now-wife to a sushi joint, ate a tempura cheesecake with fresh whipped cream and strawberries, and immediately said oh fuck i want to vape this until i die. so, be on the lookout. i also daydream of a perfect custard i never get bored of and am always satisfied with. dont hold your breath.

How would you describe your mixing style?

its an absolute mess. mostly i just slap random things together constantly like so many monkeys in a room banging on typewriters, and eventually i catch a snippet of a shakespearean sonnet and lean into it until it either tastes good or i ruin it with overthinking and shelf the idea. most often, the latter. sometimes i do get a great idea and rush to slap it into atf and it just works, and thats always nice.

Advice for new mixers?

do whatever the hell you want! forget the rules! no gods no masters! chase that hot pocket vape dream! sft that tfa honey at 3%! make all the cheesecakes! really, just have fun with it. vaping is so absurdly subjective that in my opinion, if you are enjoying it then you are doing it correctly.

use the available resources at your disposal (noted aka "the encyclopedia", this subreddits vast trove of information, the wonderful (excepting myself) humans existing in the diy_ejuice discord) like the bowling lane gutter guards to inform your decisions and not vape cat urine/shower curtain/baby powder while birthing the labors of your overactive imagination. mix other peoples recipes, figure out what makes them work, incorporate that knowledge into your designs. talk with other mixers and brainstorm ideas, so many great recipes have come from late night chats, and everyone involved will learn and grow.

try new and exciting things, be disappointed by things, have your mind blown by things. most importantly, just dont give up, because nothing is more satisfying than tasting your own mix and falling in love with it.

If I were going to make a recipe and name it after you, what should go in there besides licorice?

by anawfulwizardabout 3 years agoDelightfully Mediocre

any amount of berries, maybe a stone fruit, probably some booze, and something that makes no sense but works anyways because you told it to

Surprised to hear you haven’t even been mixing a year yet. Is the plan to lower nic and quit one day? Or is it to DIY till you die?

4 points

by anawfulwizardabout 3 years agoDelightfully Mediocre

well, one of the first things i did when i started diy was wean myself from 6mg to 3mg, and ill probably continue to lower it in the future, but i dont see quitting on the horizon anytime soon. ive got too much of an oral fixation, i was an obsessive gum chewer before i started smoking, and that quickly turned into a two pack a day habit just to beat the nervous tics away, so the "healthier alternative" of vaping is working extremely well for me the past few years.

as a strawberry mute, I felt so incredibly attacked when you talked about hating INW Custard + having weird issues with lotsa flavors then reveled in the fact you're NOT strawberry mute. thank you for the painful reminder. at least we can still hate on INW Custard + weird off notes together.

any uncommon flavor combos you really love using together? any underrated flavors you think deserve more recognition?

5 points

by anawfulwizardabout 3 years agoDelightfully Mediocre

the plight of the strawberry mute is much greater than my coconut flavored whining! i will sing praise of jf blueberry and cap ripe strawberries until i am whispering my last words, the pur cheesecakes need a lot more love, and people need to stop being afraid of licorice. in terms of uncommon combos, there is a disturbing lack of blueberry+banana recipes, and i think those two pair so well together in any application

by 25c-nbabout 3 years ago

Interesting since blueberry + banana is a classic smoothie flavour! If I can get at least one blueberry flavour to work for me, this combo is instantly added to my priority list of recipes to bang my head against until it tastes good

Geez, I'm not afraid of licorice, it just tastes SO BAD!!! No offense intended.

2 points

that statement is laden with inherent offense and, where i come from, is an instant declaration of war

As a likely raspberry mute, possible blueberry mute, slightly less possible strawberry mute, and simply revolted by the majority of diketone flavours (e.g. TPA VBIC, TPA/CAP bavarian cream, INW vanilla shisha) which also makes custards mostly off limits for me, maybe it will help you feel better that it definitely gets worse! Raspberry is one of my all time favourite fruits too...

Some consolations for me maybe, so dont feel bad for me lol:

  • for diketons, thankfully TPA peach juicy is yum, I think theres a few other exceptions too

  • I havent really had custard IRL so not sure what im missing... does the pudding thing at The Mandarin count as custard?

  • I certainly havent tried every raspberry/blueberry/strawberry yet so its possible theres at least one out there for me!

  • I still have one of my all time fav flavours, mango, thankfully...

  • I really enjoy other exotic/tropical fruits so dragonfruit, papaya, guava, cactus, kiwi, pomegranate, passionfruit, etc... these I can taste luckily

So I have that going for me, which is nice

Have you tried WF Boysenberry/Raspberry? I absolutely LOVE that flavor!!

Not yet but I will soon, I just had some arrive in my last order

Awww, I am so sorry you are strawberry mute! I wouldn't wish that on a nice person like you-who answers tobacco questions with details for someone like me who knows nothing about them! Btw, my FLV Cured just was delivered about an hour ago. I'm gonna mix it with the Shisha vanilla tonight. (The vanilla was the shisha kind, right?) Can you taste the Ultimate Stb by FJ? I had heard some people could taste that one when they couldn't taste others.

it's okay, I'm also a pepper taster, allergic to nickel + sensitive to PG so there's a lot going on haha. Awesome about the FLV Cured! Yes with Shisha Vanilla, here is the Sweet Leaf recipe. I hope you like it!

I actually need to SFT Ultimate SB, I'm hoping I can taste it! FA SB Green is a perfect candied sb + VSO SB Raw gives me about 75% sb, so at least I can enjoy those :)

2 points

by JooseMakerWannabeabout 3 years ago

Oh cool! I haven't tried the VSO Raw flavors yet, I only learned about that company a month or 2 ago. I love the flavors, especially the fruits!! The recommended % on the site is a bit low, but at 3 or 4% they are excellent for my tastes. I picked up that FA Strawberry Green after seeing it pop up in recipes. I'm glad you can at least enjoy that!

So how many flavors do you have, and how many have you actually tried?

4 points

by anawfulwizardabout 3 years agoDelightfully Mediocre

approaching 250, and im pretty sure ive used almost all of the good ones at least once, and certainly some of the bad ones along the way. ive SFTd quite a few (some regretfully) but mostly new releases or things without available info

I need to make a pact with a Tastes Great level demon. What would you mix to successfully summon said demon?

6 points

by anawfulwizardabout 3 years agoDelightfully Mediocre

oh we summoning demons now? just takes a little licorice darkness, some strawberry goats blood, the apple of eden, and the cinnamon fires of hell

4 points

by mixman0gabout 3 years agoDelightfully Mediocre

And through the cloudy mist, there appeared the demon! ☁️☁️😈

Lol, that sounds legitimately within my comfort zone. Might try to take a stab at it. What else am I gonna do with a sword? 😜

Thanks for giving it a name. I love your description of „flavor adhd“. What was the worst flavor you ever tried ?

so far, fa monsoon. SFT @ 2.5% = robotussin poured over baby powder

by 25c-nbabout 3 years ago

You sound like me a little bit with the mixing style, at least when I start a new recipe, I dont think about anything beyond "put these together and see what happens because I feel like it" and so I personally love the monkeys + typewriters analagy hahaha

I am mixing that lychee recipe right now, especially since it sounds right up my alley with the honeysuckle (I find its very versatile to my tastebuds). Thanks for sharing it :)

2 points

by anawfulwizardabout 3 years agoDelightfully Mediocre

i loooove honeysuckle! there are so many incredible things you can do with that flavor, and its very forgiving. its going back into my rotation soon with springtime approaching, and one of my first own recipes that i really enjoyed was honeysuckle based so ill probably dust that off and polish it up

1 points

by 25c-nbabout 3 years ago

Yeah its definitely in my top 10 :)

>there are so many incredible things you can do with that flavor

Thats been my experience as well, in recipes where it sounds liike it would be gross, comparing with and without it makes and breaks, respectively, the recipe.

Could I possibly trouble you for another honeysuckle recipe you enjoy please? If you can think of a good example or just a great recipe I might not have seen?
