What happens to PG or VG when they get REALLY old?
submitted over 3 years ago by [deleted]

I'm not talking about keeping mixing supplies in a freezer: I'm thinking about mixing a bottle of juice, toss it in a drawer or closet and forgetting about it for 5-10 years.

I know the flavor will mute and nicotine will oxidize in time, but what happens to PG and VG in the long term?

They just keep soaking up water from the surrounding environment. Nothing special.

So, if the bottle is capped and still in a cool, dark place, it really shouldn't break down?

VG and PG are stable at room temperature, they don't decompose into anything afaik.

Why would you keep PG and VG around for 5 years?

A question on another forum asked "is 5 year old juice safe to vape?" I knew the flavors might fade and nicotine might oxidize but I got challenged on the issue of PG and VG.

I don't know. Sounds like a cool super power to me. You wouldn't want to have that special ability?

I've seen juice that's sat in a cupboard for 2 years and it gets gunky. Is that normal because you'd think it would become more water like if it's absorbing it?

Old VG gets sweaty and old nicotine solution in VG settles requiring more shaking and oxidation.

AFAIK PG is fine.

I buy VG in 5 gallon buckets and the VG at the bottom tastes like plastic. This is usually around the 1 year mark when the bucket is nearly empty.

I would also mention, that personally I wouldn't vape juice that old that was stored in LDPE. The VG/PG wont interact with the plastic, but some flavors over a LONG TIME might. PET is less likely to do so, Glass wont interact at all.

Not a chemist so someone might correct me but that was my understanding.

How long is a long time. Roughly.

I just cracked open a sealed, 4 year old, 0 MG bottle of Blueberry Yogurt from VVVapes black label line. I added nicotine and vaped it. It was delicious. AFAIK it may well have been the last bottle in existence, and I got every drop out of it.

VG sours and will be unvapable. The PG will also be unvapable being that you mixed it with the VG.

There's really no point to your experiment.

Thanks for your comment (I think) but obviously you didn't read the post. What experiment?

>I'm not talking about keeping mixing supplies in a freezer:

You missed the preface.

Perhaps I should have said "what would have happened if I mixed a bottle of juice and put it away and forgot about it for 5 years?" Because that's what happened. No experiment.
