How'd you get your handle?
Honestly, I'm not sure, but i made my ATF account and somehow got stuck with EyeMToysRus. I didnt like the connecting to kids and spent my credits to change it to EyeM2sRus, but started to hate that very soon after lol. EyeMSam became my ELR Handle shortly after and as soon as I was able to change my ATF, I FULLY became EyeMSam for good. I just figure "eye__" is a thing atf suggests automatically and, I AM Sam, so, it worked out.
How long have you been mixing for?
I started mixing at some point after my daughter turned 1, and she's now 4, so roughly 3.5 years seriously. I never causally mixed, it instantly became a serious hobby.
MTL or DTL?
I'm 24/7 DTL open airflow small af RDA, dripping. I'm constantly testing things for Noted and want/NEED the best flavor profile i can get for everything.
Current flavor or profile obsession?
I'm sort of all over the place. I'm heading towards needing more uniquie fruit/cream combos for the season vs the cookie/bakery vibe i been hittin for awhile. But overall i just like rich, delicious, full vapes. As long as it's delicious I'll hit it. I can't get obsessed over one profile.
Most/Least disappointing flavors that was/not as expected? Secret Weapon?
You can check me out on Noted and see what i have to say about great, mediocre and bad flavors. Ive realized places like Bickford, Tastey Puff, Fairies Finest, Nature's flavors, and 99% dissapointing failures and you should overall just avoid them at most cost. There are a few standouts like Tastey Puff Raspberry (Cheesecake) and others these mixers can share about.
There are tons secret tricks and tips, thats the art of DIYing. Mine and your best secret weapon is Single Flavor Testing your flavors. You'll learn so much more about them than you'd think and it'll get you far fast.
One of my favorite tricks is SSA Sweet Yogurt paired with INW Yes We Cheesecake. Its so great and gives the proper creamy tang you want from a cheesecake.
Another is WF sweet and sour rhubarb as an accent to Blue Raspberry vapes. Adds a great tang.
Use lime vs lemon to brighten fruits. Or other citrus like grapefruit, dont stick to just one thing. Play around.
Google The Baker's Almanac and download the PDF and gather info and tips on amazing fruit/herb/spices/booze pairings and you'll make something like Mango Blackberry cinnamon custard. It works.
I'm not a pepper taster, I'm not butyric sensitive, I'm not a coco-nut like Sascha ;) haha so i don't have too many insanely disappointing flavors that don't make sense lol
Mixing Milestone?
Oh, HANDS DOWN being asked to join the crew of Noted. I was floored with honor and it has been one heck of a great time. I couldn't be more stoked to be in the Noted family and force myself into sfting my stuff cuz before i started guest spotting on Noted, i didnt sft. I learned how to batch mix and recipe test. But sfting has been a huge step forward in my mixing career and i have Noted to thank for that, notably ;) Emily, Cheeba, James and Dave. <3
Recipes you admire/love?
I'm all over the place. I have had a hard time really pinpointing specific recipes that I've admired/loved because I'm mostly a once and done type mixer, i.e. i rarely mix a recipe twice. If you want to see me review recipes from all sorts of profiles, check out Noted. I do a lot of recipe reviews from well known, and not so known mixers. There are so many talented people out there mixing.
But, that being said. I will always and forever SCHILLLLLLLLL the following recipe. This woman nailed the profile and was my first experience in complex, advanced layering techniques. Jarvis is a Goddess for this recipe alone and i wish it was a One Shot for people to enjoy:
Epic Grape PB&J by Jennifer Jarvis. http://tjek.nu/r/rHer
White whale?
I dripped a peanut butter vape onto a coil that hand a rootbeer float previously and the two together was fantastic. Havent been able to recreate it since. But it is a goal lol. I've had a few recent ideas on the matter.
How would you describe your mixing style?
I have an idea, create it on elr, bang out a rough sketch, then go over it like, a dozen times, changing flavors and %s as i think and watch noted and read elr. That would be a from scratch recipe. Then there are recipes like Yes We Pineapple where i got this fire cheesecake trio, and i just added a coconut i knew was really creamy, and a good pineapple combo i knew worked, and first try it was really good. I have a lot of recipes that are first draft bangers just due to me knowing my flavors and how to work the %s. Other recipes take that dozen draft remixing, then after the first mix i make adjustments, and most times get where i want to be within 2 or 3 variations. If not i bench it for awhile and come back again later.
Advice for new mixers?
You must choose. Path 1. The Path of the Addicted Mixer. You will go down a rabbit hole and have over 1k flavors and develop recipes. Advice: buy all 10ml flavors, get a 30 if you go through it quickly and/or love it. Then a 60 or 120. 120s last a long time when you mix like you have ADHD and want to try everything. Bulk buy 10ml bottles for testing single flavors and play along with us on Noted. It'll get you so far as a mixer. Watch Developed's 3 years of videos or Wayne's videos that span 5 or 6 years. Get as much info about your flavors and tips and tricks into you as possible and ASK QUESTIONS, we are all so eager to help others achieve what we have and be happy with their home mixes.
Path 2: the Path of the Casual mixer. One shots are your game. That, or finding a mixer who is very active, buying flavors for a recipe of theirs that peaks your interest, trying it, and trying your best to align your pallate with a seasoned mixer. It'll help you then pick their recipes and suggest other mixers recipes based on reviews, that will allow you to only order for specific reasons, and save you money.
Tips for everyone, 30ml + GET WIDE MOUTH BOTTLES and thank me later lol
Ask questions, make yourself known, let people hear you, post recipes, take critique, test test test, start small, ask more questions (i still do), dont be a dick, and just keep trying. If YOU like it and it keeps YOU or someone you love off cigarettes, then your mission is a success.
So you guys need to talk session-drummer into coming on the show.
Who is your favorite mixer?
Who are you nominating next?
Thanks for the rhubarb tip!
100% agree with that ahem ahem
Probably ID10T lol i get so excited when he posts recipes. But otherwise I don't have a favorite lol i go by the mix. There's a lot of underrated, great mixers who don't get a lot of recognition. And plenty of great mixers who do. I'm a bit of a slut like that lol.
You bringing up Tasty Puff just reminded me that I didn't buy their Almond Milk flavor before it was discontinued, RIP. I'm regretting not listening to u/glasschalice when she told me to get it!
I love rhubarb + will definitely be trying out some rhubarb with blue raz, thanks!
How many SFTs do you do in a year? lol
Hey, Sam! 2 questions...
-
Your formatting is bad and you should feel bad. Do you?
-
Did /u/cheebasteeba have any delightfully mediocre words of wisdom for you when he passed the torch?
1: no, i did it on my phone lol but i am aware. 2: honestly, its hard to remember lol but no I'm pretty sure they picked me knowing id be able to handle myself. Prolly told me to just be myself and stay enthusiastic about the job.
No wonder! That must have been a hell of a chore. With that in mind I suppose we can grade on a curve.
But come on, man! That question was a softball, you could have just made something up on the spot, like Cheeba did for half the flavors he talked about on Noted ;)
Noob here. what is "noted" he always mentions? Im confused.
It's a podcast about flavors, based around the Flavor of the Week post that happens here:
https://diyejuice.org/flavors/flavor-of-the-week
They have guests from the community join the 3 co-hosts to review flavors every week.
Why is no one asking the most important question of all?
Do you like Green Eggs and Ham?
How many flavors do you actually have? And how many have you not even used yet?
Somewhere between 1300 and 1500, I've lost count. My stash says about 1150 but there are A LOT i have not input into my elr stash.
Honestly, way too many, but way fewer id i didn't sft for Noted lol
Hey Sam! I'm so happy that someone as fun, knowledgeable and enthusiastic as you filled my shoes =) Sorry if they were a bit stinky!
What would you say is your favorite part of becoming a member of the Noted crew and weekly tasks you take on, and what is your least favorite?
My favorite part is the banter and just getting to get on stream with friends and have a really fun time talking about our obsessive hobby.
Least favorite is scrambling last minute to get shit done for big episodes.....like next weeks fotq.....which i still have to mix.......
Hell yeah man! I always looked forward to Mondays because I'd get to hang with the fam! And same for me haha. 80% of the time I mixed that shit up like an hour before the show lol.
Follow up question: What's your favorite cheese?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 once i realized you did that, i dropped a lot of stress off by back haha
IRL??? Colby Jack for snacking, American for burgers, mozz for most other stuffed with cheese options. I like cheese lol. But not huge on the offensive ones lol.
Vaping?? Obvs tpa dx sweet cream.
