Fieldy's Review Corner- BONUS Vanilla Custard Edition- Shunsui Kyoraku by Wolfwheeler
submitted over 3 years ago by FieldGreensMissing One Flavor

What? Twice in one day? That's right! When a new vanilla custard recipe comes along, we make time for it. When you can review it on the same day u/wolfwheeler has his AMA, you definitely make time for that. He's made quite a name for himself this year with several outstanding recipes, some of which you'll be seeing in future reviews from yours truly. Tonight we're doing an old standby with (maybe) some new twists- his interpretation on vanilla custard. It's a staple in the vape world, with variations and interpretations that number in the dozens if not higher. Is this the one that finally claims the crown? Can one really claim to be better than the rest? That's open to discussion, but first let's see what we're working with here.

Here's the link: Shunsui Kyoraku

And here's the recipe:

|Flavor|Amount| |:-|:-| |FA Bourbon (Vanilla Bourbon)|1%| |FA Custard Premium|2.5%| |WF Egg Yolk SC|0.3%| |SSA Ice Cream Vanilla|1.5%| |PUR Simply Cake|2%| |FW Sweetener|0.25%| |CNV Vanilla Pudding|1.5%|

Review Time

Classic as it may be, when I find a new vanilla custard recipe that interests me (and that's most of them), I mix it up. This one caught my eye not only because of the mixer, but because of his use of WF Egg Yolk. I like my custard EGGY. To that end, if you can ever get your hands on SA Vanilla Custard Nougatine, go right ahead and do that, because it's as close to a single flavor eggy delicious vanilla custard as you're ever going to get. I digress. Wolf also has some other fun stuff in here. PUR Simply Cake's stock is rising faster than Gamestop these days, and CNV Vanilla Pudding is touted to be a better version of FLV Vanilla Pudding.

Quoting Wolf "Put egg in custard". I couldn't agree more. This custard is eggy and rich and a touch of spice and everything nice. If you like a more cream like, lighter style custard, look elsewhere. This is T H I C C. FA Custard Premium is still far and away the best custard flavor to me and that's where we begin this journey. It's got all the goodness and none of the chemical or oily notes that CAP VC has. To this, he adds that WF Egg Yolk. Now I've never tried that as an SFT, but he describes it as a sweetened egg yolk, and given how well I know FA Custard Premium, that description is spot on. This has a deep, sweet, eggy flavor that is further bolstered by the CNV Vanilla Pudding. That one I do know as an SFT, and it's a nice vanilla pudding with more body than the FLV version. It brings that body here, and really makes this thicken nicely.

PUR Simply Cake is an interesting addition here. It concerned me at first, because what would a cake flavor be doing in a custard mix? It seems wrong, but it's not wrong if it works. Personally I can't exactly figure out what it's lending to the mix on its own, but whatever its doing, it works. Wolf says it's to make it thick, so I'm gonna believe him. SSA Ice Cream Vanilla is a new darling, but it's still not my favorite VIC flavor, that still belongs to LB VIC. However, the SSA version does have a nice buttery vanilla flavor that helps round this custard out. Egg, butter, what's not to like? For the last of the flavorings, FA Vanilla Bourbon brings just a hint, and when I say a hint, I mean a hint of spice along with some more vanilla. It's really just perfect. Top it off with a touch of FW Sweetener, and baby you've got a custard going.

Let's bring it all home. Is it the best Vanilla Custard recipe I've tried to date? Yes. The depth of flavor, that eggy goodness, the hint of spice. Nothing else I've tried matches it, including custards that use the OG Holy Vanilla. I say give it a two week steep, that's my standard for custards, but other than that, I can't find anything to ding in this recipe. It's custard perfection, at least for me. If you like an eggy, rich custard, you can't miss this one.

Until next week, stay well everyone.

Nice Fieldy, thanks for 2 recipe reviews in 1 day! You just reminded me to add WF Egg Yolk to my next BCF cart. I've wanted that flavor since it came out bc I like weird stuff + eggy custards too. I love FLV Vanilla Pudding, but CNV is one of my favorite flavors, it's just so good. I'm really looking forward to trying this recipe!

Egg yolk intrigues me. In japan we eat sukiyaki in raw beaten egg yolk. The tare (sauce) gets thickened with the egg and it’s finished with a mouthful of white rice

I mix everything 70 VG 30 pg but I don’t see why you couldn’t do anything else.

Thanks. I was just confused by the fact that some recepies on alltheflavors stated: "best vg0%" like in the link for this recepie and just couldn't understand that moment.
