Fieldy's Review Corner- The Icing and the Cake- Bronx Style Vanilla Birthday by DavidN2KL
submitted over 3 years ago by FieldGreensMissing One Flavor

Welcome back everyone for another recipe review. This week we're going with a hot new recipe that I've definitely seen discussed on the Discord, so I'm hoping we get some chatter here for once. Personally, I've been waiting for a new birthday cake recipe for a loooong time so this is a review I've been looking forward to. Let's dive in.

Here's the link: Bronx Style Vanilla Birthday

And here's the recipe:

Review Time

There's surprisingly few recipes for birthday cake. Sure Wayne has one, but it's old as dirt, and really not very good on modern gear. Another mixer shared their personal recipe on the Discord a few years ago, and it was good, but it was something like 16 flavors. Along came this recipe, and it used some of the new cool flavors on the block, and so I had to try it. Let's get the TL;DR out of the way up front: It's really good.

Deep dive: This tastes bang on like birthday cake with icing and sprinkles. Some of you are probably looking at the recipe like "FA Corn? Really?" Yes really. It gives just enough of that batter-like goodness without really tasting overly like corn. If I REALLY had to nitpick at this recipe, I'd say go one drop less than it calls for on the FA Corn. Does one drop make a difference? With FA Corn it sure does. For the cake, PUR Simply Cake and FA Vanilla Cookie come together to make a nice, solid, basic vanilla cake. There's not a ton more to say. It's good vanilla cake, and that's really all I'm asking for. FA Corn lends that nice batter twang here, but be very judicious. One extra drop and you'll be vaping creamed corn cake, and that's not what we're here for. That being said, the FA Corn makes this cake so good. Without that little bit of tang, it's just simply cake (pardon the pun).

For the icing, LA Cream Cheese Icing is a standby, and INW Shisha Vanilla swings it towards a heavy vanilla icing. FW Sprinkles are literally the sprinkles on the cake, and it really brings home the bacon. For my second nitpick, WF Sweetener is something that I see no reason why anyone would own, let alone use. I'm not gonna harp on this much, because sweetener is sweetener, and you can use what you want, but WF Sweetener isn't a good one. Switch it out for FW Sweetener.

What can we learn from this recipe?

Just because a recipe is simple doesn't mean it can't be great. This is the best recipe of the profile I've had, and it's made with simple popular flavors and one flavor that there's a good chance you'll have to order. That being said, it's that one flavor that really makes this cake so good. I feel like I keep coming back to this every week, but so many times it's one choice that brings the recipe to where it needs to be. Also, am I the only one surprised at the lack of great birthday cake recipes? Well search no further, this one is here, and it's a good one. Mix it up and enjoy.

I was only missing FW Sprinkles when I saw this recipe + bought a 10ml specifically to mix this up (which I've still forgotten to do lol). Sounds delicious, I'll be mixing it soon! How long did you let yours steep?

About two weeks. Standard for me for custards and bakeries.

I asked discord what’s FW Sprinkles. Spider linked me to Concrete’s review. I honestly don’t know the purpose of FW Sprinkles so I just left it out. It’s only at day four now steeping but off the shake I can already tell FA Corn is wonderful in this cake.

Just wait until that corn calms down. Also, I really enjoy the sprinkles in this and can taste that sprinkles flavor pretty distinctly. I think it’s worth getting.

Honestly I hope it doesn’t. I have an ADV with FA Corn at 2%
