FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
How'd you get your handle?
I was eating a salad when I signed up for Reddit, and it was the first thing that came to mind. I wish I had a more interesting story than that.
How long have you been mixing for?
I started mixing in January of 2020 when a local flavored juice ban was passed in my area. /u/isuamadog started helping me immediately and I've been here ever since.
MTL or DTL?
DTL. I don't do any MTL vaping, just not my thing.
Current flavor or profile obsession?
My love is all things sweet. Not sweet in the "add so much CAP Super Sweet your eyes tear and you get diabetes" sense, but my flavor profiles are desserts, bakeries, custards, cereals, that kinda stuff. I also like tobaccos, but RY4/sweet kinda tobaccos. You won't find me vaping any FLV Cured, just ask u/duncanyoyo1. If you're ever looking for recommendations on that kinda stuff, ping me in the Discord. I've tried dozens and dozens of those kinda recipes. More to come on that......
Most/Least disappointing flavors that was/not as expected?
Easily WF Strawberry Cheesecake for most disappointing. That flavor was so overhyped when it came out, and it's neither a good strawberry nor a good cheesecake. I don't get the hype at all.
Most surprisingly good flavor is OSD RJ4. I tried this on a whim as part of a mass RY4 testing that I did with /u/isuamadog a while back, and it became one of my favorite RY4 flavors. I fully recommend it without reservation. It's got a really nice darker tobacco note (than most RY4), and nice caramel and vanilla. Needs a steep, and a purchase from somewhere not named BCF, but I like it so much I bought 16 oz of it. I may or may not also have a recipe where it's the star.
Mixing Milestone?
I don't really know. I have a few recipes of my own, but I spend most of my time mixing other people's recipes. I wouldn't say I'm a prolific creator by any sense of the imagination, but I've definitely mixed a ton of recipes, and know the flavor combinations for my wheelhouse profiles well. My bigger contributions are in helping people in the Discord rather than creating a great recipe, and really that's what we're all here for. It's what makes the community so great.
Recipes you admire/love?
Anyone who knows me even reasonably well knows that I'm a shameless, over-the-top shill for the Corn Bread Puddin clone by Bigred (the original version). There's nothing that is even a close second for me to that. It's better than the commercial version by a lot. You can find it here: https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/169315. You should definitely try it if you haven't.
Behind that, my favorites are Holiday Pie, Drunken Custard: the Deuce, and Dirty Custard, in no particular order.
White whale?
I don't really have one. Like I said, creating my own recipes isn't really my main goal here, so there's not really something I'm chasing after desperately. Sorry to disappoint.
How would you describe your mixing style?
For as much as we generally discourage substitutions to new mixers (and I stand by that for new mixers and in instances where you'll be reviewing a recipe), I do like to take recipes that I like and see how other things will work in it. I use that knowledge to make my own recipes, when I decide to do that, which isn't that often. I also think of mixing like I think of food. Generally, the flavor combos that work are more or less the same, and it's a good way to think about how a recipe will work or not work. All that being said, when you're going to review a recipe, I think it should be done as the recipe was written by the creator, no subs.
Advice for new mixers?
Join the Discord, and ask questions. Ask lots of questions, and then ask more questions. Definitely have your first order checked BEFORE buying it, as this is where a lot of mistakes and a lot of wasted money happens. Everyone in there is really helpful, and we're all there so that you can learn from our mistakes.
After that, it's all about having fun. DIY is so much more affordable than buying commercial juice that you can make mistakes and it will cost you like 75 cents. Take risks, try recipes, have fun, and help those who come after you. That's what keeps me here.
What recipes would you consider to be "classics" that everyone who is even semi-serious about learning to mix should just try and why?
-
Holiday Pie- It's a really great custard/bakery combo and I always come back to it. https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/81155
-
Viserion- A testament to what you can do with simple and widely available flavors. My summer ADV. https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/103899
-
Soho Time- Probably THE definitive tribute to simplicity, and a great intro to FA Soho. https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/96967
-
Custard Now- Legendary custard that doesn't need a steep when most custards need two weeks. The mandatory intro to custards as far as I'm concerned. https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/73934
Hey, thanks for bringin sexy back!
As someone who tries a ton of recipes:
- What are some recipe red flags for you?
- When do you leave reviews?
- Which recipes were aha moments for you in learning tricks/combos you now regularly use?
What are some recipe red flags for you?
Recipes where the creator specifically writes that they haven't tried it yet. I have no idea why people make those public. Recipes that don't make any sense from a common sense perspective. I get that there's recipes like Grack that make zero sense and some people like, but I find more disasters this way than gems.
When do you leave reviews?
From a principle point of view, I won't review a recipe that I've had to sub something in, and I won't review until I can make it through at least 30 ml it. Taking two vapes of a recipe and putting up a review seems superficial. I like to find what's below the surface. From a realistic POV, whenever I remember to do it. I should really be better about it.
Which recipes were aha moments for you in learning tricks/combos you now regularly use?
Puckenade taught me the FLV/LA Lemonade combo, and it's still my go to for lemonades. I think Viserion is a shining example of how common, inexpensive flavors can come together to make something really great. It also taught me to use a little lemon to make blueberry pop.
How many flavors do you actually have?
418
Similar to the most surprising flavor question but about recipes-
Is there a recipe you thought you'd love, had all the right flavors, and was shockingly NOT good to you, or the inverse - recipe you knew you'd hate but you tried it anyways and turns out you love it?
I'll do one of each.
For thought I'd love but hated, it's Cap'n Burgundy's First Mate. Love the flavor profile, it's well reviewed, done by a great mixer, and BAM! It's all FA Forest Fruits. That's not the worst thing it could be, but it's definitely not Crunch Berries.
For thought I'd hate but loved, it's Cabin. At first glance, it's kinda bland looking, and I really don't love Pear. It overachieves in basically every aspect though, and when everyone says it's "fall in a bottle", they're right.
I love hearing about how mixers get their usernames, your namesake does not disappoint lol. I have a 16oz bottle of FLV Cured, feeling mildly attacked (jk). I definitely gotta try this OSD RJ4 now, I've honestly never heard of it, so thank you!
I know dog asked a similar question about which flavor combos from recipes are your favorite, but how about your personal favorite flavor combos, or just some tips n tricks regarding flavors that work well together, or achieve a certain goal when used together?
For someone just getting into the bakeries and cereals what flavors would you suggest as must haves?
CAP Cereal 27, TPA Cheesecake (Graham Crust), OOO Corn Bread, TPA Crunchy Berry Cereal, OOO Pie Crust, CAP Sugar Cookie, CNV Lemon Creme Wafer, TPA Vanilla Cupcake, JF Yellow Cake, TPA Bavarian Cream, FA Cookie, FLV Rich Cinnamon, FLV Vanilla Pudding, CNV Vanilla Pudding, FA Cream Fresh, FA Milk, OOO Cream (Milky Undertones), FA Meringue, FA Zeppola, INW Yes We Cheesecake, CAP NY Cheesecake, JF Biscuit, LA Cream Cheese Icing, TPA Vanilla Swirl
That should get you started.
What is, in your opinion, the best black licorice flavour and why?
