Monthly Remix Challenge
submitted almost 4 years ago by isuamadogRenaissance Mixer

Cloning is hard. For lotsa reasons. I'm going to rehash some stuff today that's already been said best in the FAQ Friday: Clone Requests post by u/Apexified explaining how to get the most out of a Clone Request. In that post, you can find a bit of r/DIY_ejuice history on the Monthly Clone Challenge. The idea was to take one recipe from the previous month and to work on cloning it together as a community. The first in the series was in March 2017. This month we are bringing back an old idea with a new twist. Let's have a look at last month's thread before we begin, shall we?

Clone Request Thread

In the interest of gift giving and holiday sharing, I'd like to take a moment this week to highlight a particular corner of our subreddit, the oft-forgotten Recipe Clone Thread. Many of our visitors who stop in are looking to replace that juice that has kept them from smoking for so long. They don't want to deep dive, they have no problem vaping the same thing forever and, now, it's gone. And, nobody's got time for that. So, a few new members will pop in, drop a clone request on the front page and get deleted/redirected to the Recipe Clone thread, or actually post there correctly in the first place (gasp!). Then, the poor indigent requests die an unhappy lonesome death for a few reasons:

  • many of us have little experience with those particular juices (or haven't vaped commercial in years) so it's hard to guess what they actually taste like since descriptions are mostly made up piles of crapola marketing.
  • many of us have no idea of what flavors were available at the time those juices were made making guessing flavors to even start with more difficult.
  • even if we did know, there's still no telling what they put in there to make that mix. It literally could be anything.
  • the post gets buried, not stickied and loses visibility.
  • posters often leave out any details about the juice (linking is usually not allowed since links to nicotine sales are prohibited by Reddit policy and Reddit has threatened the sub with closure over it)
  • offers from experienced mixers suggesting a remix are sometimes not received well. most queries are truly for 1:1 clones and people don't want to hear about a suggested 'remix' (or how a remix one could shoot off the top of one's head is even likely to be better than any clone attempt).

That last one is the sticking point that holds me back often from commenting. I can possibly offer a remix using the flavors I actually am familiar with instead of guessing what all the TPA, FW, and FA flavors are that I never tried. Well, that and not really knowing much outside of tobaccos. :) Let's have a loot at last month's thread, shall we?

November Requests

14 separate requests (one mixer asked twice) and 10 got at least some kind of response. Let's all take a moment to thank u/NuttyNana1 for patiently providing links to point these ejuice seekers closer to getting their flavor needs met. Your efforts don't go unnoticed or unappreciated! That said, out of those 15 clone requests only 1 lucky poster was delivered an actual recipe built on whichever flavors were likely used at that time to make a recipe that could possibly be a considered a clone and not a remix or a link to atf to do more searching. There were a few suggestions for known existing recipes that may fit the bill or scratch that flavor itch. Those requesters willing to try those may get lucky and start appreciating the complexity of the mixes that DIYers have enjoyed now for some time.

Remix Challenge

Here they are, all of November's requests. For better or for worse, these are what the people want. Let's take a stab at theory crafting these profiles and see what the community can come up with. Here's plenty of options to choose from. Let's see how differently everyone would approach it and what we would come up with, yeah? An opportunity to test your theory crafting skills, like we used to do here.

| No. | username |Request | Profile | |--|--|--|--| | 1 | ajohndoe17 | The Voyage by Coastal Clouds | a chewy, creamy and sticky cereal bar... combining those gooey melted marshmallows with ... berry crunch cereal | | 2 | aintnoplanetx | Villain vapors: Pair of Deuces | Ripe, crisp pears blend with sweet, juicy honeydew melon | | 3 | Chandler-Biing | IVG Tropical Ice blast | kiwi, ripe-tasting watermelon and crisp apple, a chilled ice exhale | | 4 | illogik76 | IVG Cinnamon Blaze | Sugary chewing gum is complemented by aromatic cinnamon | | 5 | Krayfish404 | Purple Alien by Rocket Sheep | sweet and sour and tarty cream, with a fizz, maybe a tinge of Fanta grape | | 6 | ajohndoe17 | second request for #1 | see above | | 7 | HH_LL | Snozzberry Juice by USA Vape Lab | "the original, signature flavor of freshly picked ripe magical berries previously undiscovered in nature, indigenous only in Murica" (from a website) | | 8 | Otherwise_Fennel104 | Frozen. yohguryt:Forest fruit -Blackberry |This hot mess of a request I assume is for a Frozen Black/berry Yogurt | | 9 | lastnoirking87 | Pink Spot's Honey Cured Tobacco | "smoky tobacco ... like Uncle Herb’s afternoon cigarette with just a touch of real honey" (reviews say it's mostly 'honey' with a little tobacco) | 10 | lastnoirking87 | Bootleg Vapors True Smoke | "stood out for its similarity to cigarette smoke" | | 11 | beckonator | Vape Pink's Cookie Butter | "an oatmeal cookie dipped in milk and topped with brown sugar. I believe it tastes just like the cookie butter spread you can buy in grocery stores" | | 12 | synphul1 | it's so fluffy by vapewild | "just straight up cotton candy. That sweet spun sugar taste with a caramelized cooked sugar flavor on the exhale. Almost buttery/cooked like the kind of cotton candy or fairy floss you get at a fair or carnival made on the spot"* (actually answered by u/FomentLife in the thread) | | 13 | DeezNazty | I Love Cookies too by mad hatter | Infused with caramel and strawberry flavor profiles, just like home baked cookies | | 14 | Striking_Tomato8689 | 7Daze- reds apple | Red apple? | | 15 | awfulJohn | Dekang Portal Blend | Dekang style bacco? |

There you have it. 15(ish) requests for you to test your theory crafting skills. Let's see what you are made of! Comment below with your remix ideas:

  1. How would YOU approach any of these profiles if you weren't limited to a clone attempt?
  2. Which recipes do you already know of that might fit the bill?
  3. Which flavors do you think would be most useful in getting started on these?
  4. Do you know of any existing recipes that are close to these profiles?
  5. Most importantly, can YOU theory craft a recipe that fits the profile?

I do think that tethering yourself to using flavors that were available then, trying to make the exact right mix of flavors for a clone isn't worth the effort. What does seem fun to me is riffing on the profile and seeing the ways we all might approach the same thing from very different directions based on our mixing styles and experiences.

> ## Drop your recipes or thoughts in the comments

And/or get a head start on December's Clone Request Thread! Let the remixes begin!!!

Happy mixin, i

PS if you don't want to play, make sure to check back and upvote the recipes that you think look like they might be good/close/informative or whatever.

#9 Honey Cured Tobacco

|flavor|%| |:-|:-| |TPA Black Honey|3| |FLV Cured|0.5| |FLV Kentucky Blend|0.5| |FA Honey|0.2|

Add-ons:

- You can throw in some TPA Western at 0.2% for a touch of leather

- Add 1.25% Shisha Vanilla (or swap with FA Honey)

- Swap FA Honey for 0.3 VT Honeycomb for a darker, richer sweet flavor

- Swap Kentucky for 1.5% FLV Virginia for a blonde flavor

- too strong? reduce Cured and KY both to 0.25% or leave one out

This sounds promising...the vanilla I think is something I would have skipped over, but it will make a big difference

A wee bit o vanilla tends to help. Black honey at 3% might be a bit strong for that flavor but I bet it’s not too far from the OG if that’s what’s in it.

/u/Otherwise_Fennel104/

looking at your request, I'd start simple

Forest Fruit, Blackberry, Yogurt

something like:

Brand | Flavor | % ---|---|--- FA | Forest Fruit | 2% TFA | Blackberry | ~~1%~~ 0.5% FW | Yogurt | 3% CAP | NY Cheesecake | 1.5% INW | Shisha Vanilla | 1% FW | Sweetener | 0.5%

by isuamadogalmost 4 years agoRenaissance Mixer

i was thinking similarly around fa forest fruit and tpa blackberry. FW Yogurt/NY CC/Shisha Van should be a great accompaniment. But that TPA looks al little high, no?

by Foment_lifealmost 4 years agoWinner: Best Recipe of 2020 - Gruber Grape

Very possibly

It shows on ATF that the average use rate is considerably higher, but maybe knocking it down to 0.5% would be prudent and adjusting upward would remain possible.

that stuff is present and potent at 0.25 for sure. I'd recommend starting there for sure.

u/aintnoplanetx

#2 Pair of Deuces

I'd start with a combo of TPA/FA Pear (like from u/EdibleMalfunction's Pear of Aces on ATF), add some FA Fuji for crispness (Edible uses JF Fuji), and top off with a bit of TPA Honeydew.

something like...

|Flavor|%| |:-|:-| |TPA Pear|4.5| |FA Pear|0.75| |FA Fuji|1| |TPA Honeydew|1.5|

or make it even better and swap that aggressive TPA Honeydew for FLV Wild Melon at 1-1.5%?

Thank you very much! This looks promising. Ordered whatever I didn't already have from the list I'll let you know how it goes. Ty again

I would try this a bit different:

|Flavor|%| |:-|:-| |FA Apricot|2| |FA Pear|1.5| |INW Pear|0.5| |TFA Honeydew|0.25|

No apple because apple + pear = shampoo. YMMV.

3 points

by isuamadogalmost 4 years agoRenaissance Mixer

TPA Honeydew probably should be around 0.25. That stuff hangs around and beats the shit out of other flavors. You can have my FA Fuji when you pry it from my cold dead and shampooed fingers :)

3 points

by bigtidderalmost 4 years agoSalty Dog

Fuji is lovely but I think I might love INW Two Apples a bit more, I've been reaching for that one a lot lately.

#9 True Smoke

|Flavor|%| |:-|:-| |FA Black Fire|0.1-2| |INW Dirty Neutral Base (DNB)|0.3-5|

On top of some bacco blend. I'd need more information to suggest something.

Edit: Seems Capella has a flavor named "Smokey Blend". 100% wouldnt be surprised if that's in the OG too.

#1 Berry Crunch bar

...is very similar to my vape bae Sauce LA Capone. This is the only juice Ive ever liked and the only recipe I have or ever will work on. https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/4076589/Capone%20clone%20-%20The%20Sauce%20LA

This recipe is very good but I am so close to tweaking it to perfection when compared to whats left of my stash of the original recipe. One of my edits is to increase meringue flavor as the original is more marshmallowy.

This looks good, I’ve got everything. I make a cereal vape very similar, may have some insight on that marshmallowy feel. Never had the original though . I’ll mix this up now

by BC10_for_pizzaalmost 4 years ago

Here is my working recipe as of late. I'm letting it steep rn so I can try it side by side and adjust but it is god damn close. I distinctly remember reading somewhere on reddit that the (former) owner of Sauce LA said there was LEMON in the recipe which the other posted recipe leaves out and there is definitely more meringue in the original recipe which I still have in my possession and have vaped literal gallons of. I'll post it when I'm happy that it is close enough.

by NostalgicTXalmost 4 years ago

Even on top of the fruit circles? That’s def lemon forward, I actually like the lemon in fruit circles after it tames down a bit but the meringue helps a ton

I remember the Voyage by Costal Clouds. It was a crunch berry cereal with marshmallow. I don’t think I’d try to clone this, but you could absolutely make a better recipe with the same profile. u/johndoe17

where would you start?

3 points

by wolfwheeleralmost 4 years ago

I would go a little more extravagant (reaching) than Fo would.

"Recipe Name"

Co. | Flavor | %
---|---|----
TPA | Rice Crunchies | 2 WF | Marshmallow (Candy) | 1.5 TPA | Berry Crunch | 3 FW | Hazelnut | 1 VT | Milk Fresh | 1.25 VT | Sweet Cream | 1.25

I would start here. I remember this e-liquid pretty well and I think this would be a killer improvement on it.

by Foment_lifealmost 4 years agoWinner: Best Recipe of 2020 - Gruber Grape

I'd probably be looking at some combination of:

  • TFA Crunchy berry cereal
  • TFA Marshmallow
  • WF marshmallow (gooey)
  • TFA Fruit Circles
  • CAP Fruit Circles
  • TFA Vanilla Swirl
  • FA Meringue

I've got an all TFA fruity pebbles ice cream recipe that I rather enjoy, that might be a viable starting point if you remove the ice cream and adjust the percentages otherwise

I'd probably start somewhere around:

Brand | Flavor | % ---|---|--- TFA | Crunchy Berry | 4% TFA | Fruit Circles | 1.5% TFA | Marshmallow | 2.5% TFA | Vanilla Swirl | 1% FW | Sweetener | 0.5%

/u/HH_LL can you explain what the "snozzberry" might be comprised of? I don't mean the flavors specifically, just the general fruits. Maybe give us your personal take on what it tastes like?

2 points

by HH_LLalmost 4 years ago

Oh man, it’s been years since I’ve had it. I can remember it having a light strawberry and thorough mixed berry flavor, while being almost coated in yogurt. I’ve tried other snozzberry flavors and nothing has come close. I feel juices used to have more flavor back when they came in glass bottles. They made a snozz crème which had the more profound yogurt/cream flavor to it, to which I preferred.

by Foment_lifealmost 4 years agoWinner: Best Recipe of 2020 - Gruber Grape

Strawberry/mixed berry?

maybe try something like

brand | Flavor | % ---|---|--- FA |Red Touch | 1% FA | Forest Fruit | 1.5% TFA | Dragonfruit | 1% TFA | Strawberry Ripe | 2% FW | Yogurt | 4% CAP | Creamy Yogurt | 1.5%

2 points

Yeah I can give that a try, I’ll need to order a few of those but thanks for your input!

No, I haven’t had it. I stopped buying commercial a long time ago

Makes sense. I should have gone on this endeavor long ago, just got comfortable buying. Figured it would be impossible to recreate this favorite flavor, now I have no choice but I am becoming more confident it can be done

Not sure. He’s already tried Pear Concentrate-INW, Pear-FA, Pear-TFA.

Ty for this source btw! Saved me some work there. And for doing the research on what I've tried for a unique perspective from that angle too. Appreciate it!

Update:

After making 5-6 recipes since asking Reddit, yours may be the closest, here is my recipe:

Shape up pear: 3%

Wf pear: 1.5%

TFA honeydew: 3%

TFA cantaloupe: 1.5%

It's not perfect, but it is very very close, if not better in some ways, for now it is definitely doing the trick. I will likely try tweaking in the future. After a couple of weeks it starts to turn the signature pink color of Pair of Deuces, albeit a bit lighter. Maybe it needs more steep time?

I find it strange that the Shape Up Pear may be the primary pear flavor concentrate Villain Vapor used to make their recipe as it needs to be imported. For some reason I'm skeptical of this so I may try to tweak the recipe to be heavier on WF pear, or another.

Shape Up Pear is really good though, shame it seems no US company stocks it.

I did exclude cream custard and vanilla, personally I detest flavors like this in my vape so I highly doubt there's even a hint of them in the original recipe, ordered them just in case but don't think I will need them.

Thanks again for the recipe!

You can get shape up pear straight from molinberry. Anyway, glad you mixed an acceptable vape
