Planning to go DIY, will my needs be fulfilled?
submitted almost 4 years ago by mooglerain24

Hey, i plan on starting this soon for some reasons

  1. It looks fun
  2. Im kinda selective (not to say difficult) on my flavor palette. I like iced flavors, and sour flavor. And i didn't found anything yet that blew me away with either iced or sour. It's hard for me to commit into buying 60ml bottle to just not be what i expect and be disappointed having to finish a bottle I don't fully enjoy.

So my question is: Is there options/recipes to make good iced or sour flavor ? Or should i just continue wasting money trying to find the perfect iced or sour premium juice...

The way i see it is that i might as well make them myself even if will take some time, at least i can make test bottle and at least enjoy the process until i find the one...

Anyway sorry for the grammar... Not native english speaker.

You may want to rein in your expectations on sour. Honestly, the furthest you can go down that path is "a little bit tart"; after that, it's an unpleasant metallic tang. Iced, on the other hand, is easy - although you can become habituated to it if iced is all you vape. If you want things to stay cold, give the ice a rest now and again.

That's an idea, thanks. And I don't know much about juice, but yeah i guessed the sour taste was hard to mimic. I'll keep this in mind

Looks like you’re interested for the right reasons. It will take time and experimentation but make sure you document your trials and errors, that way when you get it just right you can keep making that one.

Will certainly be cheaper in the long run and you’ll be able to tune a flavor to your exact liking.

There are tons of good recipes out there. I have a few good iced fruit recipes that I made, and there’s thousands and thousands available online! You can take from them and adjust to your preferance.

What do you need to make iced flavor ? Are the flavor already iced ? Or it is another thing to add up?

There are quite a few additives you can use to make something “Iced” Some people like Menthol, a very popular choice is Koolada, my personal favorite is WS-23 There are a few more.

Adding any of these in at .5-2% can be anywhere from “cool” to “oops I drank liquid nitrogen”

Sour is FOTW this week. Watch the noted episode next week.

Get FA Polar Blast and WS-23 for cooling.

Instead of buying 60ml of random ejuices you can mix six 10ml DIY juices. In time you will learn what you like and hopefully find what you’re looking for. After the initial buy in I was in the green after about 2 months of vaping. I now mix 60ml for about $2.34 including the bottle which I often re-use.

The beauty to DIY is you get what you want. Yes, there is a learning curve and yes, it may take a while to dial in that perfect recipe, but that's all on you. No more having to accept what's in the bottle that the store sells.

Be sure to read all the articles linked in the sidebar first (this will really help cut down on mistakes and blown money).

Yes, your needs will be much more likely to be fulfilled.

For reference, it took me about a year to find a custard recipe I'm satisfied with, after many "not quite"s along the way. There are a lot to try.

But mixing (to a recipe) is fun, it's easy, and it's substantially cheaper than buying store-bought. I consider it to be economically unavoidable as a DTL vaper.

Only downside is that there are flavour concentrates you will buy that you try once and go "blegh", and the nearly full bottle of it will remain in your collection forever as a mark of shame. Looking at you Inawera Creme Brulee, you horrible burnt tyre of a concentrate.

That's the kind of experience i want in the end i guess. Thanks for the tips!

Well, I would consider iced or sour as something that you add to a recipe, an additive, so not a flavor, per se. So you will see a lot of DIY recipes, soda recipes spring to mind, that give the option to make them cold by adding a cooling agent, like WS-23. So I think you didn't like the actual recipe under those sour and/or ice additives.

So, I would just make some highly recommended recipes off of ATF, ones that you think would benefit from either ice or sour, mix them up, then give them the additive.

Cooling is easy, WS-23 works really well, but you might want to try Koolada instead (also known as WS-3). Neither have any flavor, it's just "cold". Just keep the percentage down, try 0.25% to start, you can always add more if it's not cold enough.

Sour is not easy. Something about it in vape form just doesn't quite work. Pucker your lips type of sour, IMO is impossible right now in vaping, but getting a pop in your fruit recipes & a mild tartness is possible. Part of the problem is, the flavors & additives that we do have that somewhat impart sour, if you add too much of it tend to mute flavors, so you end up with a somewhat sour flavorless recipe. That said, not all is lost, citrus flavors can add a pop/tartness to your recipes. I use LA Lemonade or TFA Lemon to that effect. Keep it low- 0.25% to 0.50% see how that works. If it doesn't, try TFA Sour (which is 20% Malic Acid in a PG solution) or go all the way & buy powdered Malic Acid and/or Citric Acid & mix it yourself (no set rules to this, but I make my CA & MA mixes at 10%).

Hope this helps.

Editted: Lol, Flavor of the Week is Sour, it was posted earlier today, it's recommended reading.

Thanks, it helps a lot ! I'll keep that in mind ! I figured it was more of an additive than a flavor. I didn't know about malic/citric acid that could be put directly in it. If i do that, I'll try finding more ressource, its sound sketchy, but at the same time those are in pretty much every candy anyway i guess

malic acid and citric acid can be purchased in additives from DIY vendors.

Not sketchy, SDS for the TFA Flavor Sour it shows that it's malic acid/propylene glycol on the second page. (BTW, TFA has a SDS for all it's flavors). They don't tell you exact percentages, as that is a trade secret, but it's common knowledge that it's 20%. As for citric acid, use the search link on the sidebar, it's been a subject quite a few times. And then there is this link that goes into the subject way beyond all others. But definitely read all about it, I did & came to the conclusion to use it, but I'm a little batty in the head. If you do decide to buy it, get the pure, non-gmo & kosher type. Last thing, citric acid got me the closest to sour, not to the level I wanted, but a half step closer. Just saying.

Why koolada instead of ws-23 ? I mean why do you recommend koolada over ws-23 ?

I didn't, or I didn't mean too. You use one over the other according to what you want. WS-23 is stronger than WS-3 (if the WS-23 is the 30% solution). Personally if I have a soda recipe, I use Koolada, if I have an ice cream recipe I use WS-23.

I went thru my bookmarks & found this link I think you will find it interesting.

Dude I'm 3 months into DIY made the best liquids in my life time since then. I inspire from e liquid recipes website and use my own flavours, no matter if they are a different brand. I got 30 10ml bottles of FA INW TPA SOL and still buy shit that's on sale. With a 10ml INW bottle you can make a shit load of liquid. If you like sour, there's sour. If you like sweet tart, there's sweet tart... Even without sweetener I made juicy sweet vape using FA juicy strawberry, FA Kiwi, INW Raspberry, INW Biscuit,... BUT BEWARE IT'S A MONEY PIT 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
