A measuring syringe for someone that is low vision /blind?
submitted about 4 years ago by poochbrah

Hi all

I'm looking for a measuring syringe ideally in 0.1 ml increments up to 1ml that is accessible.

Maybe the syringe can click into place at each increment or make a sound as I am strung going to see where the syringe is at when I draw the flavours.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the UK BTW.

You should be able to see the readout on a scale better. I suggest mixing by weight instead.

measure by weight, not volume and use a 0.01 precision scale

Thanks I'll have a look for one

Makes me wonder if anyone have made a scale that reads out the number for you. Would definitely make it easy for low vision/blind people to mix.

I'd love to build this, but it wouldn't be "consumer grade" unfortunately.

It’s a good business idea to build upon! I believe you could definitely build such a thing.

Yes there are some out there but for larger volumes. I'll see if my local blind centre has anything this precise. Thanks

Or perhaps a huge print scale with a good backlight.

There are "syringe magnifiers" sold for this purpose, but I'd look for a scale with 0.01g precision and a large, backlit display - see if you can read that, it will be much easier than using syringes.

Thanks I'll have a look for syringe magnifiers didn't know they were a thing

Measure by weight instead. There are some scales you can buy that have pretty large displays on them for sight impaired people.

Could you read a display on a scale if it had a large display and/ or with a magnifying glass? I feel like that would be easier than using syringes. I mixed by weight during my first go around of DIY, when I got back into DIY years later, I switched to mixing by weight w a scale + wow, life got insanely easier. Either way, I wish you the best of luck on your quest!

Yes it looks like this is the best thing to do, I should be OK with a scale with large numbers. Thanks for the response

Hi. Something like this should work. The display is rather large and it has a backlight. The link is from Germany, but I‘m sure you get similar ones in the UK. Just make sure it measures 0.01g. This way, you can just mix right into the bottle on the scale. https://www.amazon.de/Dipse-Digitale-Laborwaage-TP-500-Digitalwaage/dp/B00W3JSKGM/ref=asc_df_B00W3JSKGM/?tag=googshopde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=227964560064&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15219683526385735585&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9041543&hvtargid=pla-422151669553&psc=1&th=1&psc=1

Probably late to the game, but I switched to using an adjustable pipette instead of syringes for mixing by volume.

The one I use is a 0.2 - 1ml range in .2ml increments and that works for me, but maybe something like this could help https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HPJQD5H/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_PPR2SCB7CCN39TQ1V7AK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

How large do you need the numbers to be / how low vision are you?

If you go by weight, the numbers on the AWS LB-501 are fairly large. You may need a magnifying glass to make sure your using the right mode. Grams vs OZ vs DWT.

Plus you not having to use a bunch of disposable syringes or pipets if your using a scale.

Good points I'm fairly low vision but can read large print providing they're close to my face. Thanks for the recommendation

I personally prefer syringe as it's quicker and made no difference in flavor for me. If my deafblind wife decided to use a syringe with something specific in mind, I'd put a tape around the stick where the measurement ends so she would know when to stop pulling. That's one idea.

Thanks I will try that

Good scale + magnifier is probably your best bet. I personally hate syringes. Maybe you could make some DIY friends and help each other out? Sharing flavors, ideas, tools.

Honestly the easiest way IMO is get a decent scale at least to .01 accuracy. And also a decent hand held magnifying glass to read the display. I work with a couple of vision imparred persons and they do this because PC has such limited zoom settings without ruining what should be on screen. Worth a shot and you won't be paying extra for a low vision specfic model.

I've been mixing for awhile. I started off with syringes and quickly moved to a scale. I hate horrible eye sight and it is a real pain in the ass to try to get a syringe through the nipple on flavor concentrates. you have to use different syringes for each flavor, unless you clean them, and even then some of them are so strong that you can't help but cross contiminate. It's also hard sometimes to tell if you have air bubbles in it or if you have the right amount if you have the smaller needles and the concentrate is perfectly clear. a scale is such a simpler method. you can mix anyway you would like to. But I highly suggest, forgoing the syringes and getting a scale. It also makes it much quicker and easier to clean up after.

Thanks scales definitely seems the way to go
