#Tea-Ki

Oh my goodness. That is intensely flavorful, so much so that it might be too intense for some folks. But not for me. I taste tea with passionfruit-mango syrup in it and I love it. The tea kinda sits in back behind this really tart, citrusy passionfruit that quickly shifts to a deeper funky sweet mango. I don’t really get the lemon lime soda as a separate thing, it just seems to be contributing to the fullness and tartness of the passionfruit and mango. And that is the closest I can come to a criticism, it needs more citrus soda if it’s supposed to taste like there’s citrus soda in there. If not, good show. The tea seems to be used with great success here, just as described, a bully pushed back but still present. I worried that the bitterness of the tea and the piney peel of the mango would interact in a way that would be unpleasant, but the other ingredients put those things in their places.

Taste 1 - 10 pts. Does it taste good? 9

I think this team might have been pandering to me with this recipe. But yes, it tastes amazing. Where was this lovely concoction when I was last sitting on a beach? It would have been perfect for that. I will give this 5 stars on ATF because there’s no 4.5 and it deserves a round-up. But here I’m allowed to take off a full point for not just being the absolute most wonderful thing ever, so that’s what I’ve done.

Inspiration 1-10 pts. How well does the juice adhere to and capture the inspiration for the contest. 8

Tastes so much like vacation I wish I’d taken on my vacation to make my vacation more vacation-y, but I still can’t shake feeling that they could have dove deeper into the inspiration, beyond just tropical = vacation.

Originality 1 -5 pts. Is the recipe a remix of a tried and tested idea or something never seen before. 3

Mango-passionfruit tea certainly isn’t anything new, and I don’t see anything special in the way these ingredients were used, but I feel like they should get something for originality for making these things work so well using a method some might not have thought of (super sweet to push back the tea and probably prevent a bitter finish).

Tea-ki

Overlooking the water and letting your toes graze it's surface. You take a long sip and relax . . . The stress of packing and the pressure of travel time melts away as you sink into the tropical, earthy flavor of Tea-Ki.

SC Black Tea is to bring something unique to a vacation-style beverage. In this recipe, it adds a warmth like on a summer night and adds depth to the passionfruit and mango.

FLV Citrus Soda because it is always the perfect bottom to a citrus top.

FA Florida Key Lime to punch of the brightness.

FE Lemon to support the note from Citrus Soda.

WF Passionfruit for it’s tropicality and its very forward flavor.

VT Shisha Mango to add some bottom notes and an almost syrupy quality to the passionfruit.

CAP Super Sweet pushes the black tea a little further back and helps keep it from being the bully that it wants to be.

Wanobe's $neaky PP

What happens when a Texan, a Hawaiian, and a Russian walk into a mixing competition?

A fruity rice treat with serious tropical vibes. After a day of hunting for droids on dunes of Tatooine, you just want something nice and refreshing to shove under that hot stuffy helmet.

Tasty off the shake and vape and seriously impressive considering the one hour time crunch. Big thanks to $neakyBabushka and Wanobe for this one.

This is the vape you're looking for.

Rice and Vanilla Swirl for a tasty creamy rice base.

Guanabana for the tropical funk factor.

Island Mango and Honey Peach to sweeten things up and double down on the good tropical vibes.

1.5% FLV Guanabana

0.5% JF Honey Peach

1% WF Island Mango

2% FE Sweet Rice

2% TFA Vanilla Swirl

#Wanobe's $neaky PP

It’s a creamy, thick rice base with a hint of vanilla, topped off with exotic fruits. I get tart pineapple-ish top notes and a fair amount of peachy (not piney) mango, but some ripe banana-ish body that gets down funky up against the rice. I know that damn rice is eventually gonna fade into like a stale flour tortilla starchy ugh and not this authentic rice, but it hasn’t yet, and yum.

Taste 1 - 10 pts. Does it taste good? 8

Sure does. And has a nice broad spectrum of flavor across the brighter top notes and down into that creamy rice base, without ignoring the midsection. It’s a whole package of satisfying flavor. It’s that damn Guanabana. I swear you can put that stuff into almost anything and it’s going to be good.

Inspiration 1-10 pts. How well does the juice adhere to and capture the inspiration for the contest. 8

Again, vacation = tropical? I mean yes, but this seems to be the best any of these teams could do. With the time allotted, I’m not sure any of the teams could have done better, seriously doubt I could have done better myself, but looking back, it seems one of these recipes could have stood out, maybe if it was connected to a personal story about a memorable vacation or a movie about a vacation or shit, anything besides they said vacation so we do tropical.

Originality 1 -5 pts. Is the recipe a remix of a tried and tested idea or something never seen before. 2

Mango Sticky Rice. Kitty’s Buddha recipes. Simple recipes that use Guanabana with one or two other fruits that taste amazing. This isn’t exactly unbroken ground.

#Wanobe’s $neaky PP

Taste: 8 - This is really tasty. Guanabana is functionally assuring that much. The rice isn’t drying this out, but sorta melding into the creamy coconut vibe from Swirl and Guanabana to make some vaguely coconut-ricemilk base that’s letting the pineapple-y notes in guanabana and the mango/peach combo sit right on top

Inspiration: 8 - This captures a super duper tropical/exotic vibe and it does it really well. The sweet rice was an inspired addition and really helped make this mix stand out in my mind. The concept works well, and it definitely hits a “vacation” feel to me.

Originality: 3 - You lost one point each for using two “cheat codes” TFA Vanilla Swirl and FLV Guanabana are both individually staples and flavors that have really massive broad appeal. Losing those two points shouldn’t be viewed as a knock though. They were both very good calls for this recipe.

Total: 19 pts

#Tea-Ki

This smells like it could be re-named “oops! All mango” and I’d never be the wiser. I am really glad that more comes through when vaping it

Taste: 6 - I enjoy this overall. The citrus and tropical fruits are playing nicely overall though something does seem to be elevating the floral nature of the black tea that’s largely running as an undercurrent. The sweetness isn’t overbearing but it is considerable.

Inspiration: 6 - This reads “summer” but I don’t know that it reads “vacation” to me. I get more of a canned iced tea read from this, maybe more “summer road trip” than “summer vacation”.

Originality: 4 - Citrus, mango, tea… not a strictly “original” concept, what is original here though is the way you guys went about getting it there. The SC black tea doesn’t get near enough love for how well it works in a sweet tea or iced tea recipe. FE Lemon is a staple but I like the use of a few different fruits to make a fairly amalgamous mango forward blend of fruits.

Total: 16 pts

#Messy Vacation

Taste 6 - this is pretty good, for some reason I didn’t expect the pear to bear so much of the weight here, and expected a darker berry heavy mix with juicy boozy pear as an undercurrent. This presents much more balanced with the pear present throughout while the blackberry/currant combo kinda rears its head less immediately and gives way to the pear again at the end. With the added sweetener here this does a good job of avoiding becoming too boozy or of the fruits falling flat.

Inspiration 7 - this definitely reads vacation to me, I’m not much for fruity cocktails but this is a nice interpretation of such and definitely feels like the kind of cocktail you’d get at a beachside resort or with a very ambitious bartender who’s been given almost too much free reign to get creative. The more I vape it, the more I like it.

Originality 4 - You’re the only group to touch on booze and rum is perfect for a summer-y vacation vibe and the WF Mora and FLV Pearesto are really only just getting into enough hands to start finding their way into public recipes

#Messy Vacation

Cool, refreshing, citrusy, with a dark funky sweet berry counterweight and a bit of booze. Certainly tastes like something I might vape on vacation. Only real problem is that something about the way the blackcurrant and pear or rum and pear interact tasted a bit medicine-y to me at first, until I got used to it. Like I was tasting an off-note of Pearesto at 2% that I didn’t get at 1% as a single-flavor, even though it’s only at 1% in this recipe. After vaping it a bit, it became less and less noticeable until it was gone, and I’m left with just this nice, strong pear backdrop for the lemon lime and berry. It’s also worth noting that Black Currant bullies the blackberry a little instead of merely enhancing it. I’m not sure what the goal was here. It looked on paper like it might fill in the blackberry, but instead it changes it enough to where I can’t tell what berry this is supposed to be other than dark, sweet, and having a bit of funky ripeness to it. I don’t think that’s a bad thing; I think it makes the recipe more like some tropical vacation thing where you don’t even know what local fruit you’ve never heard of is in your drink, or care.

Taste 1 - 10 pts. Does it taste good? 5

I’m giving it only a 5 for this, because it was actually a little off-putting for a few pulls, and again after a redripping. It’s the skin note from the Pearesto. It’s boosted by rum or blackcurrant and coming on too strong and a little weird. A pear flavor with less skin would have done better. Though, it does wear off pretty quickly and becomes enjoyable, this isn’t something I would mix again, not without changing something.

Inspiration 1-10 pts. How well does the juice adhere to and capture the inspiration for the contest. 8

Between the rum and the exotic and funky berry and the overall refreshing nature of the recipe, they hit the mark pretty well, I’d say. All of the recipes in the showdown captured the inspiration well enough, but none of them managed to somehow go over and above on that front.

Originality 1 -5 pts. Is the recipe a remix of a tried and tested idea or something never seen before. 4

Lemon-lime soda with pear has definitely been done, see Yoda Soda by Staybert. And the Elderflower in that is kind of similar to the rum + blackcurrant here. But I wouldn’t call it a remix or a copy of an idea so much as just doing something similar. Still, minus one from originality for how much this reminds me of Yoda Soda. I need to see something mind blowingly different for a 5 here, whether it’s in the profile or in the way an ingredient was used. I could be wrong, but it looks like there was maybe an attempt here to use FA Black Currant as a WF Blackberry enhancer, but if that’s the case, it wasn’t entirely successful. Still, pear and blackberry citrus soda with rum is a wild enough profile for a 4 here.

Tea-ki

Taste: 7/10

Pretty tasty. Personally have not had a lot of tea vapes, but I do like tea IRL. I do like the tropical notes from the passionfruit and mango, and how the citrus adds/does not distract from the profile.

Inspiration: 7/10

This is definitely something I would only try on vacation -- a strange drink in a strange land. On the beach though? Probably not. Maybe in my room before the start of a long day lounging.

Originality: 4/5

Unique vape. Have not tasted a vape anything like this before.

Total: 18

Wanobe's $neaky PP

Taste: 5/10

Not entirely certain what I'm supposed to taste here. The mango and peach combo is familiar, but it ends there. The Sweet Rice provides a bit of mouthfeel, while the van swirl gives it a touch more sweetness. Personally I think this would have been better without the Guanabana.

Inspiration: 6/10

In some far away island destination, maybe, just maybe they might serve this dish there.

Originality: 5/5

The most unique of the three, and a bold attempt. Points for taking a risk.

Total: 16

Messy Vacation

Taste: 9/10

Very tasty. This is certainly my favorite of the three, and uses flavors I thoroughly enjoy. Can't say I have had them in this particular combination. VT Light Rum is new to me but adds just the right touch to help me imagine a refreshing beverage on the beach. Not a 10 because it's missing coolant.

Inspiration: 10/10

This is a fruity/berry beach drink, enjoyed while lounging on a beach chair under an umbrella, on the beach. Son of a beaches, you nailed it.

Originality: 4/5

As u/Foment_life pointed out, good use of newer flavors. I like that I can taste what was intended instead of guessing. Going for a drink recipe, IMO, helped pull this out front, ahead of the competition.
