What do you mix up, when you don't know what you want to mix up? Where do you find inspiration when creating new recipes? (discussion)
submitted over 4 years ago by justmydumbluckMissing One Flavor

Picture this, if you will.

>You're on the last tank of your favorite, big bottle of Ol' Faithful, the recipe you always come back to. It's time to mix something else up, so you break out the recipe book. None of your recipes are appealing to you today. You pull up Chrome, and check out "What Can I Make?" on your preferred DIY website, and you go through every page -- nothing catches your eye. Why not make something new? You go through your flavor stash and pick out a few things you'd like to use, but the end result just isn't what you're looking for. You close out of your browser, breathe a sigh of discontent, and reach for your mod, inhaling another lungful of Ol' Faithful.

Rinse and repeat ad nauseam.

I know that I can't be the only one that experiences these moments. In fact, I'd wager that every mixer out there goes through this from time to time, which is why I want to hear from you guys. When nothing sounds good, do you have a mix for that? Do you create something new? If you do create something new, I want to know what inspires that recipe. Common or uncommon foods or beverages? Weird pairings? Single flavors, 2-flavor bangers, 1-2-3 mixes, just to see what happens? I'd love to hear your solutions to this feeling of DIY E-Juice writer's block.

DIY or Die Network. Usually between Wayne's show, Noted or Developed something, at least one ingredient will pop out. If I'm still questioning what direction to go with it, I'll just do a 1,2,3 recipe.

DIYORDIE does help sometimes. A couple of months ago it did inspire me to finally crack open my FA Zeppola. New Noted episodes always get me to buy some new flavors as well

I’ve never been down that road but if I had to I would use the +1 or +2 option on the “what can I make” (ATF), or the “allow missing flavors” 1 thru 4 (ELR). Then either omit or sub the missing flavor(s)

I have 4 all day vapes I have mixed at all times.(one 250ml on the go and one 250ml steeping for each of them) and I have 4 to 6 recipes I'm working on or fiddling with or balancing at any given time.

Most of the time when I'm lost where to go I open flavors and sniff till I find something then add to that.

The sniff test has also worked for me in the past.

I need more go-to's I guess. I just have one that I keep about 120ml of (MTL makes this last a month or more) and one or two recipes I'm still working on mixed up, usually only 20ml each.

I have huge amounts of all types of mints other than menthol so I grab a random mint and progress from there depending on what vibes I get!

Currently vaping spearmint pear and it is deliciouuuus

I hope you’ve tried SSA Garden Mint & Natural Mint. They kinda revolutionized my idea of mint flavors.

Ooo that sounds really good. Not a big mint fan but i could do this with some of my favorite concentrates

Yeah of course anything that's your big fave works for it! Along with a huge collection of different mints I have a fuckton of chocolate bases and apples that I often have no clue what to do with. Grab one bottle of that, check the "what the hell do I do with this" box of flavourings and go crazy! Creativity and curiosity go hand in hand and lead to fantastic discoveries!

honestly, this doesn't happen to me very often as the amount of bookmarked recipes I have are pretty out of control (mostly recommendations from browsing around here + on discord).

however I do often get into a "nothing sounds good" funk, so I spend a lot of my time single flavor testing. it's improved my mixing game way more than I ever imagined it could.

I gotta say, doing SFT's is my weak point as a mixer. I'm just slacking on small bottles + a testing RDA. I gotta get it together!

Don't feel bad! SFTs don't appeal to everyone. 5ml or 10ml bottles are super cheap on Amazon if you're okay shopping there.

Another tip I thought of is that you could check the my flavor stash "+1" or "+2" meaning ATF will find recipes you're missing 1 or 2 flavors for. It might be helpful to see if there are some interesting recipes you can almost make- then bookmark the recipes + order flavors when you can. (EDIT- Kuri already said this better than I could've, sorry for not seeing that before I commented)

I really feel like only a few of my recipes are perfect, everything else I'm always thinking of how it can be improved while I'm using it. So I'll try to improve it, or use it as inspiration for something completely different. Also picking a single concentrate I really like and finding a way to make it shine will keep me busy.
