Question about flavor intensity
submitted over 4 years ago by Cake_then_cake

So I’m new to DIY and have made some of the recipes found through the sidebar links (mother of dragon’s milk and backwoods lemonade) and neither of them have a very strong flavor profile to me. I tried some others that were highly rated on AllTheFlavors and I keep getting the same result. They have a pleasant taste but not a strong taste. Im following the recipes to the letter and letting them steep for the recommended amount of time. Am I just used to store-bought juice that has a ton of flavoring or sweetener? I considered I may have vapors tongue but I put some commercial juice in a tank and the flavor was like a punch in the mouth compared to what I’ve been mixing.

simple opinion mixed with facts: dragon's milk and backwoods lemonade are both really old recipes, both were/are tasteless to me even after not vaping for a month then trying them, steeped. DIY has changed a lot in the past year or two, recipes have become a lot more refined thanks to new flavours

I'm also a non-strawberry taster, meaning anything but the strawb trinity (jf sweet strawb/inw shisha and fa red touch mixed together) is tasteless to me (this means cap s-strawb, any tfa strawb, is tasteless to me)... there's also apparently a new strawb that everyone can taste out there, but I haven't tried it bc I'm kinda fatigued with mixing for the time being (400+ concentrates going to waste right now) and have been just buying one shot concentrates this past month and loving the extra 3 hours per day I have spare, not browsing for something new to mix only to make up my own snv recipe because I gotta go work

a lot of DIY recipes that're highly rated are overrated/overhyped imho. I'm impatient, though, and hate steeping... so that's likely a good reason why I find most of them taste the same (like khaleesi tit milk v6) and throw them into a drawer to be forgotten

when I'm not fatigued: 3-4(?) years into mixing and I change my ADV rotation almost weekly to something new, something I like better. it prolly ends up costing more than commercial juice for me, which is making me question if DIY is even for me

also personal rant, sorry, but it just popped in my head.

something that really irks me about the community are these randomly named inside joke recipes with 5 pages of dialog in the description on ATF. it not only makes it harder for beginners to find something that's obtainable, it makes it harder for people who aren't in the inner-circle of mixers

I'm finding it a lot harder to find recipes mixed by others that I like, as I'm more of a fruit lover... whereas it seems everyone else is a cream/bakery lover. I don't have the time to sort through 1k pages of randomly named recipes on ATF to find something that isn't a desert or a joke mix using all sasimi (sp) ingredients

I guess I miss the backwoods lemonade days of mixing

I always see my mixing as brewing my own beer. It is never going to be the quality of the industrial beer, but it is drinkable.

But you are right, like everything in vaping it is full of bullshitting.

At the end of the day there are the same concentrate makers on the market for years.

Thanks for the info. I was sort of holding on to hope that someone may have tried those recipes and would give their thoughts on them.

Hey there. I’m a fellow Strawberry No-Taster, who only likes fruits... I can shoot you a list of good fruit recipes WITHOUT strawberry if ya want. Lemme know if it would help.

(p.s. if you have a sensitive palette you wouldn’t like ‘em... they are all flavorful mixes)

Try to Add .25%-.5% of cap super sweet or some form of sweetener to some recipes that you kind of like to test. It may be your used to sweetener. Personally I like adding a few drops of super sweet and it makes my stuff better, once you get into it you’ll find out which brand sweetener to use for whatever profile. Most just stick with the old super sweet though..Sometimes upping the total % makes stuff worse and even more muted. Got to be a little careful as some flavorings just don’t scale very well as others.

I started with recipes that were at least 15% flavor and excluded some of the traps some people find themselves in like strawberry and vanilla mixes. As I progressed I moved toward adding a few drops of sweetener to mixes I couldnt get flavor from. Eventually I didnt need high flavor percentage mixes or sweeteners.

There are flavors which are quite strong at the value of 1% but you wont really know what they are until you've done the research or tried them yourself. One easy cheat is that INW flavors are typically fairly strong and used in low percentages. Just as well some flavors are sweet from the start or have a candied type flavor that makes them appear to be sweet. You might want to look up flavors or read reviews on flavors to find that information in regards to recipes you find interesting. It could make your life a little easier.

Curious what you mean by trap? I just got my nic, bottles, scale, etc.. next few days I'm gonna try and find some recipes and a few people said Liquid Barn VIC was amazing on it's own so I was gonna try that as one of my firsts. What's wrong with vanilla?

Pair TFA Vanilla Swirl with LB Vanilla Ice Cream. Take it another step for The Trinity Vanilla Ice Cream with HS French Vanilla Ice Cream

Strawberry is hard to taste in mixes. Even the trinity or whatever of strawberry is lost on some people. I happen to be one of them. Not everyone has an issue with strawberry but enough people do that it probably should be avoided unless you have the money to burn.

A portion of people also take issue with vanilla as they find them peppery and not exactly on note. I'm fortunately not one of those people.

I started off successfully with a watermelon crack clone but over time the high flavor percentage became very unappealing and I couldnt do it anymore.

I have never done well buying juices that have strawberry flavor. I always thought that I just got unlucky and bought juice that wasn’t very good but maybe I’m experiencing this thing where I can’t taste it very well. Had no idea that was a widespread thing.

I haven't even vaped much.. just here and there a little over two years whenever I buy new MTL devices trying to quit smoking. Really want to give it a legit try this time but my issue is that I can never taste any juices that I try.. maybe the SLIGHTEST hint of flavor but that's all. Doesn't matter the juice or the device. It sucks because I think that's the thing holding me back from quitting. I'm also curious about trying a sub ohm tank (direct lung) to see if I can taste more flavor but I dumped so much money into MTL devices and now DIY supplies to try making my own juice.

Are you mixing freebase or salt juice? What kind of device(s) are you using to vape? What ratio of VG to PG?

1 points

by Cake_then_cakeover 4 years ago

I am mixing 70/30 freebase at 3ml strength and using a Kylin mini v2 and a juggerknot

-1 points

by KingAthelasover 4 years ago

70/30 VG to PG? If that's the case, I'd bring it down to 60/40 or 50/50. VG gives more thick vapor, whereas PG carries the flavors through more. That would be my first step. Also, don't be afraid to raise the total flavor %. I'm fairly new to mixing as well and some of my best mixes have been in the 8-11% total flavor.

by Cake_then_cakeover 4 years ago

Cool, thanks for the response. I might try that next. I have testers steeping with another 5 flavors at the moment so maybe I just need to land on something that works for me. I specifically sought out recipes with 10% or more total flavoring for this round so maybe I’ll get lucky.

by satisfiction_phobosover 4 years ago

Shoot a little PG into the mix. Like an ml. That'll wake up the flavors.

Also the sweeteners are serious in commercial juice. Someone mentioned adding sucralose (Capella super sweet). Not a bad idea to try that too.

Add some PG and sweeteners.

1 points

by Cake_then_cakeover 4 years ago

I do have some of that. Would you say being set on a 70/30 ratio may not be best? That’s what all the juice I would buy always was so I just figured stick with that. Someone else also mentioned that so I might need to give it a try.

2 points

by satisfiction_phobosover 4 years ago

I only ever use a touch of PG. I'm a VG-Max type of guy.. but every now and again I find the flavor is muted and I add a touch of PG to wake it up.

Are you using a tank with pre-bought coils? Maybe a different coil type would send out more flavor?

And yeah, companies mix juice in... less than ethical ways sometimes. You'll find DIY tastes different because it's got less junk in it and is actually mixed to the ratio you know it to be. :p

I don't trust store-bought juice anymore. At all. Lol.

I use only RTA’s when I vape, either Kylin mini or juggerknot

by bighedstevover 4 years ago

Sweetener is the difference. Commercial juice is loaded with it usually. Try adding some cap super sweet (start small - .25-.5%) and see what that gets you. I wouldn't bother changing vg/pg percents 70vg/30pg is good for most people.

Try some fruity recipes instead of bakeries. They don't require steeping (usually). I let them sit overnight and then vape away.

Some that I enjoy are:

Just hate vape it until you can taste it, should only be a week or two until your taste buds adjust and then you don't have to spend money on sweeteners and extra flavor

2 points

by Cake_then_cakeover 4 years ago

This is another thing I was wondering. Like maybe it’s just sort of a conditioning thing and it goes away

2 points

by Smells_like_Childrenover 4 years agoMissing One Flavor

I can say from experience it does. I add .25% fw sweeetener which is half as strong as cap ss and its enough now. Took me like 2 weeks but my coils last forever :)

2 points

by Cake_then_cakeover 4 years ago

I will say Ive noticed my coils lasting a lot longer than they did. Nice to be re-wicking less often

Also I'm vaping mother of gods milk which is similar 🍻 try that if you want more cream

I'm fairly new to diy, just a few months. But I have the same problem that you seem to have. And what do I do? I up the percentages, I don't always manage to keep the ratio, but I have made some juices that I really really liked. Don't be afraid to make this diy thing your own. I have found that some of the diy community seems to think that there is only one way to mix "properly" and to me, that is bs. The whole reason I, and I can only assume everybody, started diy, was to make juice that they personally enjoyed. My suggestion to you would be to use the recipes you find as a starting point and go from there.

Also, something I just learned is that elr . com has a tool that will let you increase % while keeping the ratio. Something I intend to look into myself.

Everybody is different, every rig is different. The recipe is really the ratio of EACH flavor to each other. Too bland for you, bump up the flavors while maintaining proper ratios. Once you can taste it to your liking, you could alter the actual recipe should you choose. My 2 cents anyway. Best of luck.
