Flavorent Life Span
submitted over 4 years ago by StevenAKA117

How long can a flavorant stay good for and how could I make it last longer? I have like 50 10ml flavorants that I got 4 years ego and now it kind of gives me a headache. I bought 360 10ml bottles recently and I want to actually make it last this time.

Hi. Flavors do not actually go bad, but they may become weaker after time. Store them in a dry, cool place away from sunlight and heat. There’s no special form of storage needed. Since flavors are used at very low %, buy 10ml at a time of any given flavor unless you use it very often and in larger amounts. That’s better than having 100ml sitting for 5 years. If you notice a flavor has become weaker over time, you can up the % by a small amount and it should be fine.

Well. I have this passion fruit one and I use it twice 3 years ego and it was great. Last night I made a 30ml bottle, Istarted using it today and I have this strange headache. I stop using it and felt normal again and I know is not the nic, vg or pg because I made one before this current juice and had no problems.

If it tastes fine I doubt it's the flavor giving you a headache. Flavors are relatively inert as is. It's probably just coincidence.

There's nothing you can do about that

the easiest thing is to buy a similar fresh mix also steam and compare the sensations

They will fade, but it takes a few years

Sure they can, natural ingredients are made from various organic bits and without added preservatives definitely have a more limited shelf life. I've had a couple now that I've tossed because they shouldn't smell like nail polish remover and didn't when I first got them.

Most flavors are mainly PG, a preservative. I have many that are 5 years+ and fine.

Agreed, I have plenty that are 4+ years old and may be subjectively weaker or just yellowed (ie: the tpa sweetener I never use actually turned the LDPE bottle it came in yellow) but still just as usable as when I got them, but because of the few that didn't stay stable past a year or so at room temp I just can't agree that flavors don't go bad especially when no specific flavor+brands are mentioned. Some do, and maybe OP has one of them, or even some kind of one shot that is mixed with one that does.

It would be interesting to see a lab report on one that aged out compared to the original to see exactly what occurred, for all I know it was simply contamination from the re-bottler with a pg resistant bacteria that happens to eat the organic compound in the mix and expels acetone as waste, weirder things have happened.

I've had a select few that definitely went bad but 98% are fine even after years of storage.

I have a pretty bad flavor problem. I've been mixing for 6 or 7 years and I wouldn't be surprised if I've purchased well over 1,000 different flavorings and most of them do not get into the rotation. Many are small amounts 10 ml or less (there was a company long ago that used to sell 5mls but they are long gone). I've dragged out 6 year old flavors and they still taste fine, although a lot of them darken quite a bit. Maybe not as good as they did originally but not enough of a difference for me to notice. I have had a few that either evaporated through the cap or a couple (I'm lookin at you FW Yellow Cake) that actually melted the plastic they were in.

Damn. Melted the plastic? That is crazy. Do you ever get sort of a wierd headache or get hot flashes with some of the flavorants. For some reason the headaches with old flavorants happen to me and with almost every blue raspberry flavors I get hot flashes like cold sweats. I think I'm 1 in a million tho. My body is wierd.
