Juice making girlfriend cough
submitted over 4 years ago by thelateoctoberTobacconist

Need some advice mixing for my lady. I think she is going to make an effort to quit cigs, it would be nice for her to have another way to get nicotine while she tapers off. I've tried many different recipes and pg/VG ratios, but everything makes her cough like crazy. We've tried mtl with a kayfun, a juul, and a crown 2 on a koopor with different coils and settings, mtl, dtl and all that. Any thoughts on what might be the problem? At this point I feel like some of it might just be in her head, but if you guys have any advice or have dealt with similar situations I'd love to hear about it. The one thing I haven't done is 100% vg because I get my nic in PG, but I have done max vg at 6mg nic and had the same problem.

When my wife started I made sure it was a nice smooth juice. Sub ohm tank, air flow wide open. I'd set the power lower than recommended and tell her to make sure she's inhaling before she hits the fire button and for a second after she let go. Found that helped alot.

I'll have her try that, thanks. Could be as simple as the way she is inhaling.

Exactly. I find even when friends are trying it for the first time they always cough so I tell them to do that and it seems to help.

This exact method worked for me when I started.... and my wife and my stepson, when they started vaping. Remember when we started smoking cigarettes? The coughing and choking we went through. But we adjusted to it. Vaping is no different in that regard. The vape store where I bought my first vaping stuff told me it would take a day and a half to stop coughing. Maybe it was all in my head....but a day and half later the coughing stopped.

Adjusting to vaping I definitely coughed , it's different. It passed pretty quickly unless a flavors off many taste dry not only do I not like them but I still will cough like crazy. Dry chalk it's never good nor smooth . Vaporfi was pretty smooth in the beginning there kind of expensive though. Juice head is a tasty line too. Good luck

I've never seen anyone not cough their ass off when they first started vaping if they were smokers.

I had the same problem when I first tried vaping then I tried a nic salt e juice in a very low powered device didn't have the cough with that. Was able to switch to freebase nic a few months later. Maybe try nic salt worked for me.

This sounds like it could be a more likely possibility than PG sensitivity, tbh.

I tried to switch over several times, and in spite of keeping up the troubleshooting with basically everything else mentioned here? Whatever I tried, I kept coughing up a lung. Tried sticking it out in hopes it would get better with time--but nope, that stayed ugly enough that I never made it beyond a month or two in spite of preferring the vaping experience in every other way!

Trying salt nic was what finally did make all the difference there, once it came onto the market and became readily available. (Though my lungs still couldn't handle concentrations over 25mg or so.) Turned out that my asthma could tolerate 2 packs a day worth of tobacco smoke, better than anything stronger than 6mg freebase liquids! 6mg is still pushing it.

Everybody's experience (and body!) is obviously going to be different. But, that sort of issue is another possibility to consider. Freebase is enough harsher feeling that 6mg might well be too much.

I do have some nic salt, and haven't tried that yet, I'll give it a shot. Maybe start with unflavored first and go from there.

Yeah maybe try tfa black honey at 2-3% it's really smooth if you have it .

I think its just the bodies initial reaction to inhaling vapor. I coughed the first day but soon got over it. Inhaling prior to hitting the fire button is the key though.

It may be possible she is allergic to PG, it's not common, but I cough terribly with a 50-50 PG/VG juice, I use straight VG with just my base being 50/50. I would use straight VG with only flavorings, but the nic I am using is 50/50. Maybe have her try only VG to see if she still coughs, then start adding nic and flavorings so you can narrow it down. Also remember that coughing while vaping after using cigarrettes is normal and it can take a couple weeks or more even for former smokers to be able to vape without coughing. I found that taking deep inhales made me cough more, but brought up all the nastiness that was stuck in my lungs from smoking. It does get better after a couple weeks, but depending on how much she smokes, it is perfectly normal and I doubt very much it is in her head.

Thanks for the reply. I do have a bottle of salts in VG, I'll mix some flavorless for her with that and see how it goes.

It could even be possible, although much more rare, that she could be allergic to VG, perhaps even a flavoring. I have cut out PG but also alot of the different flavorings, so I can't definitively say whether it is PG or coffee flavorings, but if I stick to VG and away from coffee flavorings I don't cough or experience vertigo.

Definitely try that (use the Kayfun).

I've seen this before, with a person who smokes 40 rollies per day. In his case it was PG sensitivity. Even so-called 'Max VG' made him cough. Only 100vg/0pg worked for him.

The problem with 100/0 is, it's viscous and doesn't wick well, especially in non-rebuildables. But a Kayfun can handle 100/0 (at least my old one could, no problem). If wicking is an issue, you can thin the mix with distilled water (only use distilled).

Then, if it works, you can get some freebase in Vg, because salts may not provide the throat-hit many smokers need.

Yep slowly suck on the drip tip so she's sucking in some air before she hits the fire button. Make sure the wattage is not too high at first, then slowly increase the power.

It's an adjustment.

Just like the way you (and everyone else) coughed when 1st starting smoking.

Take a little bit of time.

It's probably the way she's inflating. You don't hold it in like cigs. Hard for new people to get it sometimes.

Everyone kinda coughs at first. It’s the way you take the draw, it isn’t like cigarettes. She will get the hang of it eventually if she keeps at it!

I had the same problem and was never able to quit cigs with freebase juices. Switched to nic salt and I never cough at all and have been tobacco free for over a year now. Nic salt is the best way to quit smoking imo.

People cough going from smoke to vape, for me it was uncomfortable for a few weeks. Keep in mind that she isn't just starting vaping, she's also quitting smoking so you can expect some odd effects - one of the effects of quitting smoking is your body healing which, paradoxically, can lead to a lot of coughing when the cilia in your lungs reactivate.

And as several commenters mentioned, it also can take some time to learn how to "hit" the vape right, because it doesn't draw in air the same way a cigarettes does.

Her body has to adjust to the vaper. Max vg lower nicotine or nic salt. Like several have already said. That should help until her body gets used to vaping . It just takes time.

it's not like she has to inhale to get the nic fix just like a cigar you can just get the mouthful and blow it out. it enters the blood stream faster via lung but just like chew it will enter via contact too.

she might be the type that doesn't inhale to deeply when smoking regular cigs.

is she just a social smoker or a chimney? I would imagine a social smoker would do better with smaller lower powered options that don't produce a lot of vaper.

dunno myself i started via the v2/blu cig-a-like's at 24 mg menthol and had no issue switching. well besides going through them too fast. those things produced a very low amount of vape

Just tell her to relax her jaw and throat. Let it slide in. Praise her when she does a good job.

Nicotine too high?

Just quitting cigarettes alone can definitely make you cough more than usual, so it could just be due to that

6mg is super high dude

by thelateoctoberover 4 years agoTobacconist

6mg is not high. Especially in a mtl tank, or even a sub ohm tank with airflow restricted. Regardless, I've tried lower nic strengths with no improvement.

Highly doubt you’ve tried it if you believe it’s not high. Anyways, new vapers will always cough in the beginning.

I've been vaping 6mg for years. Not sure what you're talking about. New vapers do not always cough.

It's all relative. It's based on the setup you are using. 6mg at 100w? Sure that can be pretty high for someone. 6mg in a low wattage mtl setup? That's a different story.
