Making strong flavored juice for my husband who can’t taste most juices
submitted over 4 years ago by brrrbrbr

I’m trying to get my husband to quit cigarettes for the last time and got him a low powered MTL device to get as close to cigarettes as possible.

He doesn’t like sweet/dessert juices so I mixed him a batch of Don Cristo oneshot with 10mg nic. I can taste it just fine but he couldn’t, even at 25w on his Nfix. He could taste the flavors on my sub ohm setup but DL’s not his jam. The mix has to be at around 70vg so it doesn’t leak.

I would like to: A. Get recommendations for flavorings/recipes that are in-your-face strong. B. Find out how to do a test with my existing flavorings to find out which ones he can actually taste without wasting too much VG/PG base.

Menthol crystals

Firehot cinnamon candy type flavor

Anise

That's not all together lol.

If the pods are plastic, you should not be using cinnamon juice in them

Ahh def.

Good call!

Skipped over the low powered part. I'm guessing they meant pod device.

Yeah, cinnamon candy for sure will crack your shit and eat your orings in tanks...my bad.

I forgot i swole my orings up in a kayfun in one day.

I did have success using the juice in those disposable gem tanks. I found it 6 months later and nothing was wrong with it. I didn't hit it ofc.

Haven’t thought of Anise, that’s a good one! Definitely will try menthol.

I personally love cinnamon flavor, but kept away from it because of how it can contribute to lung irritation. I wonder what people’s experience has been like here though.

I use CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl in a few recipes. At 2% the danish bends well with other flavors and the pinch of cinnamon is enough to simulate throat hit (this is for 0 nic juice recipes for quitting vaping): even 1% with nicotine will add that touch.

For testing without using a lot of supplies try the following: Use 1/2 teaspoon of VG to 1 drop of flavor. Or in other words 2.5 ml of VG to 0.05 ml of flavor. Vape that, see if you can taste it. If not repeat with same amount of VG and double flavor to 2 drops or 0.1 ml of juice, then vape that. Keep repeating by adding 1 additional drop of flavor till it can be tasted. Then repeat with adding 1drop of sweetener. Vape that. Repeat with same amount of VG and Flavor then up the sweetener till it tastes right. If you mute it or tastes like medicine, back up 1 drop. To do this, one can use a shot glass or what I use is a color pallet it is round and has small little dimples in it.

That’s a great idea! I think I have a paint palette somewhere... need to dig through my art supplies.

Does sweetener make a lot of difference in e-liquid? My husband doesn’t like sweet juices so I was thinking to leave it out but if it enhances the flavor a lot then I’ll have to rethink that.

Yes for some. If one is use to store bought juice then they are using a juice full of sweetener. Most people coming off of cigarettes they will crave some form of sweet treat. You can slightly sweeten with Marshmallow flavor.

Most store-bought juices are too sweet for me. Being able to make less sweet juices was what drew me to DIY in the first place. And he finds some of my mixes too sweet even, so I’ll have to use almost no sweeteners for him, but I’ll keep this in mind. In your experiences, which types of flavors tend to perform better with sweeteners? (Eg tobacco, fruit, cream etc)

Inewera cactus is a good enhancer for non sweet fruit. Sweetener will in most cases mute a flavour..

Also the most potent are flavour art and inewera.

Brilliant ideas! Luckily I had FLV spearmint in my stash so I mixed up a quick batch and he let me know he could taste it! Great success! Now to order some of these other flavors so he can swap when he gets flavor fatigue...

I second this. Minty stuff is hard to ignore and you only ever need small amounts in recipes, so can always get increased if he's really taste blind.

Cinnamon seconded

Right, but I thought that would be considered as a dessert. Otherwise I third it.

Hi. Any idea why your husband has issues with taste? If he‘s just now coming off of cigarettes, his taste will improve. Taking certain medication can affect taste. Does he drink enough water (3-4 quarts/liters daily)? I understand his issue. If you use really bold flavoring as an ADV, he may get flavor fatigue and stop tasting that as well. It would be really good for him to have at least 2-3 different flavor profiles to rotate through daily, like maybe a tobacco, something minty and a fruit. Here’s a guide to making your own pod recipes (also applies to MTL) Guide to making pod recipes. On ATF (alltheflavors.com) you can also specifically search for MTL recipes. Good luck!

He has no issues with tasting food or anything. I think it was that the one shot is pretty subtle, coupled with his device being low powered, it was too subtle for him smoker tongue I guess. He's happy with the Spearmint juice but yeah definitely need to find a few more flavors for him to rotate. Thanks for the link!

he's a smoker? his taste buds are going to be dulled for at least a month if not more. If you have mints or menthols he can probably taste those or at least get some sensation out of it. INW shisha peppermint is strong and a little sweet.

For baccos, I'd invest in something ashy and/or bold for him to vape.

I'd try : inw black for pipe 2.5% + 0.5-0.75 inw dirty neutral base (DNB not dark tobacco base) like maybe ill catch fire. FA Black Fire is like campfire smoke and isn't really necessary there but will def add extra realism. The bourbon is for some added flavor. CBV made that recipe for someone he knew that was coming off smoking iirc.

I had FLV spearmint in my stash so I mixed him a batch and he's happy he can finally taste something. I really have no idea when it comes to tobacco flavors so I appreciate the recs on tried-and-true recipes. I'm making a new order for a couple of CBV's recipes, super excited.

Mint is the way to go for a fresh smoker because it also gives a little ‘hit’ they’re expecting. Cbv’s recipes are phenomenal. You should try them too. It doesn’t get much better in the bacco world that that

Where did you get the one shot? Are you in the U.S.?

I got it from Chef’s Flavours. I’m in Asia so if I want to get flavorings I have to order from overseas.

Thanks! And I'm kinda hard to please flavor wise myself I've never gotten decent flavor from pods or even single coil rdas but I'd have him try a mtl rta with some Clapton wire even. I've just started using mtl again and I'm getting nice flavor from my ether, xrp and berserker mini rtas. I'm using the coils that came with my berserker rda and rta they're made from the vandy vape spools labeled superfine mtl which you can buy from some China sites, also the coilology mtl aliens.

I've actually ordered a Kayfun Lite clone and the Vandy Vape MTL clapton coils from China. Will be interesting to try when they arrive in a couple of weeks. How are you liking the berserker mini? It looks t i n y

Mostly fruits, drinks, and candies. Tobacco is sweetened best with complimentary flavors like honey, vanilla, and creams. There is also alternative "sweet" tasting flavors. Like marshmallow. If you don't want sweet, go tart, tangy or sour. Like adding a citrus, herb, or flower.

35mg salt Nic is what did it for me. Personally I wasn’t concerned with flavor as much as a reliable nicotine fix. Maybe he’s the same way?

I wish salts where around in 2012-2013 when I started vaping, would have been easier to kick a 30 yr habit of the nasty sticks

He says he can feel the nicotine but didn't like that he couldn't taste anything. I made him a strong Spearmint juice and he's happy now. Just need to find a couple other flavors like that.

Maybe try a different device, I use a fetch pro that uses mesh coils that are humongous for a all in one type of vape and the flavor is much better than most MTL setups.. it’s also sub ohm (I think around 0.17) and I usually mix at 24mg/ml 60/40, and never have a problem with flavor. The lost vapes Orion is also a good one but I like the fetch pro more. Also 10mg/ml is pretty weak for an ex smoker, everyone I’ve successfully brought over to vapes from smoking started at 24 or 48 mg salt.

by brrrbrbrover 4 years ago

24mg on a sub ohm? Haven't heard of too many sub ohm MTL setups. My DL setup is around 0.14 and I vape 3mg juice.

I had an Orion but the pod leaked and it's giving me the purple light of death... no warranty either. I'm really sad because I shelled out for the stabwood version too.

He likes to chain smoke so I started him on 10mg and he said he could feel the nic hit so I think he's ok on the nic level.

Honestly, you just have to get him onboard with the idea its gonna be pretty bland until the damage caused by cigarettes to his tastebuds has been healed. The juices I started with are unpalatable when I revisit them, because it wasn't the juice it was my tastebuds. If he sticks with it the juice and his food will come back like hed never believe in about a week, promise 😁

One common mistake is to quit smoking with low nicotine, if is MTL, use salts nicotine to 50 mg/ml, if sub ohm, start with nicotine at 16 mg/ml. After couple of weeks you can start lowering the dose, otherwise he will keep smoking. I used to smoke for 36 years a pack a day, 2 years later, I hate cigarets taste.

How about a straight Turkish tabacco its not to strong but has good flavor (flavorah). Hangsen flue cured is real nice alone but might be hard to get right now. You said he doesn't like sweet desert but 2% turkish 1.5% fresh cream .5% Bavarian cream isn't too sweet. Or a turkish with a hint of Kentucky bourbon and hazelnut or toasted almond I only vape tabacco recipes but most of mine are a vanilla custard tabacco and you said no desserts. Throw some marshmallow in them won't make them sweet but will give a thicker mouth feel to the vape.

by brrrbrbrover 4 years ago

That’s in my cart right now. Thanks for the recipe. I don’t think his little pod mod could bring out the niceness of these great tobacco recipes so I’m gonna set him up with some mtl rta’s.

You might be surprised single note tobacco's work well on mtl device's. I dont know how much you want to spend on an rta but origin vape had kayfun lite 2019 on sale for $60 i just picked up a spare last week. Its the only tank i use anymore single wire 28g 6 wraps and your done easy to wick never leaks i swear by them. If you want any more detailed recipes when you get your flavors let me know like i said tobacco's are all i really vape

I would try him on something sour. I use Liquid Barn Sour Apple around 0.5% in mixed recipes or 2% on it's own, which is an assault on the taste buds.

Try tobacco, or custard.. Those seem to shine in mtl

What vape are you using, getting a good mtl rta could also deliver a much better flavour experience.

Could be the VG content. PG is a much better flavor carrier so that could be holding him back from truly tasting it. Higher PG mixes (for mtl especially) just seem to pop way more. You sure you can’t get away with a higher pg ratio? I only vape MTL and I mix 60pg/40vg for a lot of my devices (70/30 for my pod device) and never have any issues. In fact they all wick very well cause of the higher PG too. Every device is different though.
