PART 2:
Noted Ep. 191: RED RASPBERRY (ft. Fresh03)
FW Natural Raspberry: Very artificial red raspberry candy. Weird slight chemical edge to it. A little dry. Tastes like has EM in it. A little weak in flavour. A bit harsh.
34.32
FLV Raspberry: Raspberry cotton candy with a little raspberry scented perfume. A little perfume-y. Not much flavour at 1%. But if you push it higher to get more flavour then it gets perfume-y. Very full and flavourful at 3%. But perfume-y. ID10-T tested at 2% and 3%.
35.29
FM Sweet Betsy Raspberry: A good raspberry note. Syrupy, candy-ish, some good depth. Raspberry has no off notes. But a ton of artificial sweetener. Similar amount to commercial juice. At 2% the FM SBR tastes like it has the roughly the same amount of sweetness as using 1-1.5% of CAP Super Sweet in a mix. Maybe at around 1% it would be good for sweetening a sweet, candy raspberry mix. Or if you are transitioning from commercial to DIY you may enjoy it? ID10-T tested at 2%.
36.44
HS Raspberry: Very potent. Doesn't taste bad. But not really a raspberry. A sweet red candy that can't decide if it wants to be strawberry or raspberry. Has some tartness, but not like a raspberry tartness. More like the little touch of tartness a strawberry candy has. Jammy red berry body. Finishes sticky. Would need to add another raspberry to be a raspberry candy or another strawberry to be a strawberry candy. Or could bend it into a cherry candy if you added enough cherry. ID10-T tested at 0.75% and 1%. Very flavourful.
39.26
MF (Medicine Flower) Raspberry:
Not bad, but ID10-T didn't think it was worth the $12 for 15ml. Mediocre flavour at a premium price. Fairly flat berry flavour that more or less tastes like raspberry. A bit floral without being perfume-y. A bit flat and 2 dimensional. Thin. Not a lot of depth.
Very potent. Full flavoured at 0.5%.
40.53
MF Wild Raspberry: Has more sweetness, has more natural raspberry flavour. Was Fresh's favourite raspberry for a long time. Still in his top five favourites. Delicious, but very expensive. Unique compared to a lot of other natural raspberry flavours. A lot of people rave about it. Use at around 0.5%.
42.24
LA Raspberry: As mediocre as a raspberry can be. A bit like a dull raspberry Jolly Rancher. At 5% Sam thought it was bordering on perfume-y. ID10-T didn't get any perfume note at 3-4%. But very dull, boring. Soft, kind of thin, not a lot of body. Might work as a background flavour? But doesn't have any body, so probably wouldn't want to use as a background raspberry. Wouldn't work as a raspberry main note in a mix. So maybe a bit useless? ID10-T tested at 3% and 4%. Sam tested at 5%.
43.49
River Supply (Formally Nic River) Raspberry Lemonade: Mediocre flavour. Does taste like raspberry lemonade. But nothing exceptional or exciting about it. Can make better version from scratch. Doesn't really taste like raspberry. More like pink/red berry with powdered lemonade mix type lemonade. A little dry. Not bad, but not special.
45.59
SSA Raspberry Blackberry Lemonade: Pretty tasty. Has some nice depth. No lemonade, just a little extra brightness and tartness. No distinct lemon flavour. Not a lot of blackberry or a distinct raspberry. Tasted more like a sweet boysenberry. The blackberry and raspberry notes would work with lemonade. At 3% still no lemon and got a little perfume-y/soapy-ish. The description on Chefs website says it is BB RB lemonade with fresh mint. But there is absolutely no mint or cooling or anything like that. Emily and Sam tested at 2%. ID10-T tested at 2.25% and 3%.
46.47
Chefs (The Yummy Range) Raspberry Jam and Scone Cream: Fresh and Emily really enjoyed it. Very raspberry forward. But not much scone or cream. A little non-descript bakery, really light but buttery. A bit on non-vanilla cream behind that. Mostly a kind of jammy raspberry. Good raspberry note.
49.38
DV (Decadent Vapours) Raspberry: Like a raspberry Creme Saver candy with a floral note. Oddly rich. Very creamy bodied raspberry. Really good saturation and depth of flavour. Floral high note that is more like an actual flower than just the floral edge raspberries have. Not perfume-y. Candied raspberry with creamy and rich body. Would work great in a raspberry cream where you want a floral note - raspberry and violet or lavender or hibiscus etc. Floral note is indistinct, so could be bent into whatever floral note you wanted. Or could add chocolate to it? ID10-T tested at 4%
51.07
DV (Decadent Vapours) Raspberry Dripple: Tastes pretty similar to DV Raspberry. Still has floral quality, but toned down quite a bit compared with their Raspberry. The rich creaminess is a lot more prominent. A good bit of vanilla. Tastes like syrupy, candy-ish raspberry on top of thick, rich vanilla cream and a little bit of floral. A really good raspberry cream but if you don't like florals it might be an issue. Maybe at 3% with a longer steep that floral note will steep out or become more faint? ID10-T tested at 4%.
54.58
MB Pink Raspberry: Emily would rank lower. Like raspberry LaCroix. Sam only got some pink, natural raspberry on the inhale. Nothing on the exhale. ID10-T thought it was still pretty soft at 5-6%. Very light and subtle. Found it a little candy-ish. Candy flavours need to be bold. Sam tested 4%. ID10-T tested at 5-6%. Emily tested at 3%
57.17
VT Shisha Raspberry: The best of the VT raspberries. A better raspberry jam than VT Raspberry Jam. Emily got a base-y, sweet, thick raspberry. Jammy and candied. Not very bright. Lacking a top note. But shisha flavours are more base-y and syrupy flavours. Fresh thought it was pretty accurate to the jammy, base-y hookah tobacco type raspberry. Probably not a main note in a mix, more of a back up note. Would work well backing up a lot of darker berries. Good jammy-ness. Could work in a tobacco? The missing top note could potentially be filled in with tobaccos. Maybe a moist tobacco would work best? Emily tested at 2%. Sam did 1.8%.
58.51
PART 4:
Noted Ep. 191: RED RASPBERRY (ft. Fresh03)
TP (Tasty Puff) Raspberry Cheesecake: Amazing. Mostly tastes like real, natural raspberries on cream cheese. Doesn't have the distinctive, cooked cheesecake flavour and doesn't really have any crust. Has thick, slightly tangy cream that is like cream cheese. The raspberries are darker, but not like they're cooked, more ripe. Could add a more accurate cheesecake flavour if you wanted to push it in that direction, probably INW Yes We Cheesecake plus some crust and maybe a little bit of a syrupy raspberry. Would also be a great component for a raspberry cream or ice cream with real raspberries in it. Nice as a SF.
1.28.55
Apparently TP Root Beer is really good.
SSA Raspberry Syrup: Really good. Like the filling from a raspberry doughnut. Syrupy, sticky and deep, but not candied. It has replaced INW Sisha Raspberry as Emily's go to for a jammy, base-y raspberry. ID10-T still prefers INW as the more he vaped SSA the drier it felt. It's sweeter, but drier. Needs to be mixed with something juicy. Sam thought it could have done with a bit more body, Emily thought it had plenty of body. ID10-T thought it was thick, but too sweet. A drying sweetness that made him thirsty. It's bold and has no off notes. More sweet than a natural raspberry, but not candied- like syrup. Not a main note raspberry. More of a backup to a main note. Works well in a mix that is juicy or rich. Would be really good with a rich custard. Probably wouldn't want to use INW Custard. It's good and doesn't need a lengthy steep, but it's a bit dry and would accentuate the dryness of SSA RS. WF Vanilla Custard would probably be great.
1.33.09
TFA Raspberry: Emily would rank as either her number one or two. Candied, but not too artificial. Like a natural raspberry candy. Really bright. Has a tartness. Great body. Really good raspberry note. Bold and flavourful. Completely different to TFA Raspberry Sweet. Emily likes to pair it with FW Razzleberry for a brighter, more candied raspberry. Or can use a touch of TFA with another raspberry to brighten it, sweeten it up or add a little bit of tartness. Fresh thought of TFA Raspberry as like a weaker version of INW Raspberry. Emily thought TFA is more user friendly than INW. Has similar qualities like the brightness, tartness and versatility. Emily wouldn't use above 1-1.5% as it can get floral. Sam tested at 3% and thought it was bordering on soapy.
1.37.36
FM (Flavor Monks) Raspberry: Really good. ID10-T ranked above SSA as it's more flavourful. Not as sweet but not as dry. Enjoyable as a SF. Sweet but not too sweet. Sweet, syrupy, red, candy raspberry. No floral notes. Kind of simple and one dimensional. Not much complexity. Like raspberry pancake syrup or donut filling. ID10-T tested at 2%. Got plenty of flavour and no off notes.
1.41.10
INW Shisha Raspberry: Like the raspberry version of INW Shisha Strawberry. Confusing why it's not used in more recipes. Sticky, syrupy. Can get a little dry, like anything this sticky and sweet. Tastes like raspberry syrup that may have been made with some real raspberries. A little touch of tartness. Syrupy base. A bit darker of a sweetness. Not a full raspberry, but can be a very key component to a raspberry. Needs some brightness and more of a top note. Can be used as a main raspberry note. Versatile. Works pretty much anywhere- in bakeries, custards, creams, fruit mixes, coffee, chocolate. Maybe would be weird in a tobacco.
1.42.18
Raspberry Jam and Croissant by Mlnikon (ATF): Used INW Shisha Raspberry at 2% with 0.5% FLV Red Raspberry. https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/95371#raspberry_jam_and_croissant_by_mlnikon
1.43.14
PART 1:
Noted Ep. 191: RED RASPBERRY (ft. Fresh03)
(Episode aired 23rd February 2021)
(Ranked worst to first)
VT Juicy Raspberry: ID10-T got pretty strong Windex off note. Sam thought it was soapy. The berry note behind that isn't terrible. Like a wild, darker raspberry Life Saver. Fresh thought it might be one that needs to steep for 3 weeks? ID10-T tested at 1.5% and 2%. Sam tested at 1.5%. Both had steeped for 5-6 days.
6.50
Raspberry flavours tend to have either floral or soapy off notes. Raspberries do have a touch of floral, but many companies just go way to far with it.
FR (Flavor Revolution) Red Raspberry: Medicinal. Kind of creamy. Distinct cream base with some vanilla. Cotton candy flavour. Like berry medicine. Not floral or soapy, but bitter and medicinal. Similar to how some cherries are medicinal.
10.26
SC Raspberry: Extremely floral. Not perfume-y, like raspberry mixed with wild flowers. Violet and lavender. 50% floral and 50% berry. Works really well in floral teas where you also want a berry note. Dry, sugary sweetness.
11.22
SC Blackberry and SC Blueberry are great candied flavours.
FM (Flavor Monks) Divine Raspberry: All 'Divine' flavours from FM have the same sweetener that Fresh doesn't like very much. Candy-ish. Very sugary sweet. Spearmint note. A bit floral. Faint nasty soapy aftertaste - seems like the sweetener they are using doesn't finish well.
13.02
VT Raspberry Jam: Raspberry note is too mellow. Has a peach ring note. Has it's uses, but it's not raspberry jam. Deep and jammy. Sam thought it was one of his favorites. More syrupy than many others, but maybe not jam. Sam tested at 2%
14.48
VT Bilberry Ripe is a better blueberry jam than VT Blueberry Jam. Fresh though VT Shisha Blackcurrant is a really good grape, but not a blackcurrant.
Chefs Welsh Summer Thursday (One Shot): Described as peach and raspberry soda. Peach rings candy. Indistinct red berry, not an identifiable raspberry. A little cooling. A load of sweetener. Nothing that would distinguish it as a soda. Not bad if you want a lightly cooled peach ring candy. No bad off notes.
17.18
SSA Natural Raspberry: The worst of SSA raspberries by far. Has an off note. Sam and Fresh couldn't distinguish what it was. Maybe like they were trying to add a seed note, but it went a bit wrong. ID10-T thought it tasted savoury, like meat broth. More like raspberry Jello than natural raspberry. ID10-T tested at 1.75% and 1.25%.
18.57
WF Raspberry Jelly Bean SC: Everyone else would have ranked much higher. ID10-T got a weird savoury note. Nobody else did. Fresh and Sam got a bright, red raspberry jelly bean. Not hard candy, gummy candy- definitely jelly bean. Has a depth to it, like jelly candy has. ID10-T thought that depth tasted more like that you would get in a really authentic blackcurrant, kind of funky. Like that in INW Blackcurrant. Candy, not at all natural. Unique and delicious flavour. ID10-T tested at 2% and 3%. Sam and Fresh did 2%. Can use as SNV.
20.55
RF Raspberry SC: Tastes like sugar free raspberry candy made with Stevia. ID10-T got a weird, green-ish, bitterness in the aftertaste. Similar to the aftertaste from soft drinks made with Stevia. Also kind of thin and dry, like a lot of RF concentrates.
23.35
CAP Raspberry: Has no body, very thin. Fresh thought it was very artificial. Emily got a natural depth with an authentic amount of floral for a natural raspberry. ID10-T thought it was like steeping raspberry blossom and stems in raspberry syrup. Green off note. Overly floral while being very candied. Sam got a little bit of an astringent, vomitus note on the inhale, but not a butiric vomit-iness. Also found it very flat.
24.56
CAP Raspberry V2: Slightly better than V1. Had a little more depth to it. A little more flavourful. A little more fresh, juicy and tart. A bit sweeter. But otherwise pretty much the same as the original and has all the same problems. Still has that same weird green, astringent type off note. Still too floral and too candy at the same time.
26.21
TFA Raspberry Sweet: A lot of people get a ketchup off note. Sam thought it was kind of light in flavour, didn't get ketchup off note. But got bright, citrus tartness. Very candy raspberry. More sour than tart and not in a good way. It's vinegary. Not floral. It may not be a great raspberry, but there are plenty of uses for it. If used below 2% it does really great things to strawberries. Would probably work in a similar way with other berries as well. Sam tested at 3%
28.08
INW Raspberry Wera Garden/WG: Very potent. 0.25% is a little soft. 0.5% is full flavoured. Probably won't need more than 0.5% in any mix. A bit candied, but also has some greenish floral notes. Like a berry candy with a little natural berry stem. Tart and sweet. Tastes a bit like a Sweet Tart candy. Even a little dry and chalky like Sweet Tarts. Almost boysenberry-ish, not as red tasting as you would expect a raspberry to be. Even a drop in a 10ml tastes drying. Sam tested at 0.4%. Thought it was a little soft.
31.03
PART 3:
Noted Ep. 191: RED RASPBERRY (ft. Fresh03)
VSO Red Raspberry: Fresh would rank a lot higher, in his top 3. ID10-T and Sam thought it tasted very good. But soft, lacked flavour. Has some body. A little thin on the top end. Really good natural raspberry note, just want more of it. One of the more authentic, natural raspberry flavours. If you are someone who likes softer, more subtle flavours will probably like it. Would be good mixes with something like INW Malina or FW Razzleberry if you wanted to take it in a more candied direction. Sam tested at 4%
1.01.29
Layering is key. No single raspberry flavour is going to be better than a combination of several that each add a component to create a well rounded raspberry flavour.
OOO Raspberry and Vanilla Ice Cream: Would be ranked a bit lower. Emily thought it was a bit meh. Decent raspberry note, but a bit mellow. Ice cream is really nice. Nice thick, very full dairy ice cream. Maybe could be used as a base for a raspberry ice cream.
1.04.59
OOO Raspberry Sorbet: Very expensive. A lot better than OOO Raspberry Vanilla Ice Cream. Does a better job at the raspberry.
1.05.41
Fresh has tried OOO Lime Sorbet, Raspberry Sorbet, Orange Sorbet. Really enjoyed them. But they are very expensive.
PUR Raspberry: Nice sour tartness up front. But it's a bit soft, lacked some flavour. A bit fluffy. Could be useful to add some tartness to a mix. A little jammy sweetness. ID10-T Sam tested at 4%. Fresh likes to use around 4-4.5%. Apparently a lot of people like it at 6-7%.
1.07.58
VT Sweet Raspberry: Emily preferred VT Shisha RB as it had a bit more to it. While it wasn't bright at all it was a little brighter than Sweet Raspberry. Shisha is more sticky. ID10-T didn't think it tasted much like a raspberry, more just blatantly red. Like red Jello. Base-y and mellow. Sweet, fairly juicy. ID10-T thought it was pretty flavourful.
1.09.16
WF Boysenberry Raspberry: ID10-T thought it was absolutely delicious. But he didn't get any raspberry. Sam got a tart, dark, natural raspberry. Very dark, but tart at the same time. Multi-dimensional. Very sweet, but natural tasting. Very deep, A lot going on. Combination of blackberry, raspberry and a little touch of blueberry- which is what a boysenberry tastes like. Some tartness on top with the depth of a blackberry. An incredible boysenberry flavour. ID10-T thought better than FLV Boysenberry. Better than PUR Boysenberry Preserves, unless you need it to be jammy. Very flavourful. Palate coating flavour. Ripe, but not funky. Actually tastes like an authentically ripe berry. A perfect dark berry enhancer. Add a little to any dark berry like blackberry, blueberry etc. Adds depth and delicious-ness.
1.11.11
FLV Red Raspberry: Most realistic raspberry in some ways. Possibly too realistic? Can almost feel the raspberry seeds in your teeth. Has a lot more depth than FLV Raspberry. Very potent, use at low % and don't use as the main raspberry note in a mix. Makes other raspberries more authentic. Can make a candy raspberry into a real, natural raspberry. Turns candy raspberry gloop into real raspberry jam that has seeds into it- like a homemade preserve. As a SF it's not that great, kind of weird. On it's own the seed note isn't that pleasant, kind of woody. Seems like it would work to make other seedy berries more realistic as well, boysenberry, blackberry etc. Potent. Use around 0.25% with another raspberry to add authenticity.
1.14.46
FA Raspberry: Very classic raspberry. Has a nice depth. More on the natural side. Can use it as a natural raspberry in a mix, or a candy. Very flexible. A bit of a raw, tart, almost rhubarb element. Natural sweetness. Definitely tastes like raspberry. Flavourful. Not a good raspberry to use with creams and maybe not bakeries. Good to mix with other fresh fruits. Has a natural floral edge that is accentuated when mixed with creams. Fresh doesn't think it's a particularly friendly flavour, doesn't like to play with a lot of other flavours. FA Pomegranate is similar in that way. Can make amazing things with it, but it can also be hard to work with in certain scenarios. Not a good flavour for beginners. Tastes good, but is limited in its uses. For a long time it was the go to raspberry. Gets a bit weird and floral above 2%
1.18.18
INW Raspberry (Malina): Emily would rank much lower. Fresh would rank higher. Sam got a weird chocolate note. But he tested at 1%, which is too high. Even when used low it can easily take over a mix and can get perfume-y very quickly. 1% and above is aggressively floral. Fresh thinks it's one of the best raspberry flavours. He layers it into almost every raspberry recipe he makes. He thinks it's the most versatile raspberry flavour there is. While Emily thinks it's the least versatile. At 0.8% it's a full red raspberry with seeds. It's juicy compared with a lot of raspberry flavours that tend to be kind of dry. Sticky juicy and a little warm. If it's in a mix you going to know it's there. Sam tested at 1%, too high. Very potent. Start at 0.25% in a mix and work your way up. Fresh rarely uses above 0.8%. At 1% and above gets aggressively floral.
1.21.55
FW Razzleberry: Definitely a candy raspberry. Very good. Like a raspberry snow cone syrup. Has tart, almost sour candy-ish top note. Also has a good base-y depth. Sweet, but could be sweeter for candy. A small amount would probably work really well with a candy strawberry or candy cherry mix. Probably wouldn't use in something that is supposed to be a natural berry as so candied. Even FLV Red Raspberry probably wouldn't make it more realistic. Very flavourful.
1.26.21
