Argon on top of stored nicotine.
submitted over 4 years ago by Parceljockey

I just made my bulk purchase of 100mg/ml nicotine in pg base, as well as a bunch of amber Boston bottles with the polycone tops. (Thanks Wiki)

It was recommended to fill the open space on top of the liquid with argon, to further aid in oxygen displacement and prevent oxidation.

I'm not a Weldor, so I can't justify buying a cylinder of argon only to use a little each time the bottles are opened.

I found "wine saver" ...basically Argon in a spray can:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MEHJCQ2/ref=sspa_dk_bot_detail_aax_0?psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFHWkxKVDMzUUtNNU4mZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA5NDIzOTNGUTZLRTRRUUxZNlEmZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDc5NzI4MzFGSjFDRUpTNVVRUyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2RldGFpbF9lbmRjYXBfc2hhcmVkJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

It says it's pure argon. Probably more "food grade" than argon for welding.

Does anyone have experience with this, or am I wasting my time?

argon is a waste of time and money just fill your bottles to the top with a little pg it displaces oxygen better

I did a bit of research because i do some homebrewing the idea of an argon blanket is not accurate Here is a quote from wikipedia: "...gases of different nature, when brought into contact, do not arrange themselves according to their density, the heaviest undermost, and the lighter uppermost, but they spontaneously diffuse, mutually and equally, through each other, and so remain in the intimate state of mixture for any length of time."

my guess is its because gases are so diffuse with large gaps between molecules its harder to displace anything

Yes that is what you should be using.

Not welding argon, it's not clean.

Yes welding Argo usually also contains a small percentage of O2 and CO2 which probably defeats the purpose of using an inert gas to top your bottles in the first place

Yes. You want argon wine preserver. One bottle goes a long way.

I've never used it for nic, but we do use it to prevent oxidation of canola oil by diffusing it into the oil when we store it. Should work for nic too.

I don't know how much nic means 'bulk' or how long you need to store it, but I bought my bottle of nic in Jan 2018 and I just keep it in the refrigerator. It still seems fine to me.

YMMV, maybe your palate is more sesitive, etc...

I bought 4x 1 liter bottles of 100mg/ml . Expressly intended for freezing and "prepper" status.

I'm new to this as well, but that's the same product I purchased.

Argon is argon, and with that being labeled as 100% food safe argon I assumed it less likely to contain other gasses or possibly non food safe things that could contaminate my nicotine,
