Lets talk argon
submitted over 4 years ago by Smells_like_ChildrenMissing One Flavor

I'm hearing that you want to use pure argon as opposed to argon/inert gas mixture for storing nicotine. I'm curious why pure argon would be better and can't seem to find any info on google relating to the subject.

So argon users, what kind of argon are you using? And is it necessary if I only plan on storing ≈3 years

Edit: Answered: Co2 will apparently degrade the nic over time. Nitrogen will turn it pink long term but will clarify the nic short term. Argon storage no side effects. Nicotine can be stored 5 years (or more) without argon and keep perfect clarity

FWIW, I recently opened one of my oldest bottles of nic that I'd had in a glass boston round from the bottom of my deep freeze from 2015. And no appreciable change in color or smell. Still clear and still good.

Hi. By argon, I‘m referring to wine preserver such as Pure Argon Wine Preserver. This is the most common method. Is it necessary? That’s for you to decide. Nicotine stored in a freezer doesn’t really „freeze“. Any air left in the bottle will cause oxidation and change the quality of your nicotine over time, so in terms of years or longterm storage and not knowing if it will ever be available to you again, I‘d certainly take the precaution.

3 years is good, but how about 7 years?

Freezer Nic

First bottle I put in the freezer when I received it in the mail, 2nd and 3rd bottle we re-bottled on the date on the sticker. I've been working out of the Wizard Labs 2013 bottle and it tastes just like it should. I originally bought 500 ml from each Heartland and Wizard, I have 1 (120 ml) left from Heartland, 1 (120 ml) left from Wizard Labs, and 3 more (240 ml) from Vapers Tek in the freezer. Plus I have four more 150 ml bottles coming from River Supply. Obviously first in, first out doesn't apply for me.

Without argon, just a tiny amount of headspace, maybe 3or4mm from the top. I wasn't aware of argon for preserving at that time.

I believe pure argon sold as wine preserver is the most common. Other than that, I don't see why the argon/inert gas wouldn't work. I doubt I'll be putting any more nic up for storage, but if I do, I may actually save the $12 and use CO2 from my kegerator. Theoretically, it should work just as well.

I looked into Co2 just now and apparently it will degrade the nic over time. Nitrogen will turn it pink long term but apparently will clarify the nic short term. Argon storage no side effects.

That's interesting and good to know... I know it works great preserving beer... then again, when it comes to homebrew, I don't know the meaning of long-term storage! lol

CO2 is actually heavier than argon (44 vs 40 amu or grams/mole)

You can get Argon from any welding supply company. Argon is use in welding to keep oxygen from getting to melted metal and causing oxidation.
