Hey all,
I used to have a small ejuice company called Coiled Juices in Canada. When it came time to either go all-in on that or focus on my animation/editing career, I opted for the latter, and it's worked out so far.
I only had a handful of flavours, but it was the last one I released that became by far the most popular, which I called "Smokeberry". It's still a flavour I mix up myself, and represents about a third of my ejuice consumption, the rest being a mix of other DIY for fun, and store bought.
Coiled Juices Smokeberry(30ml recipe)
TPA RY4 - .8mg
FA Desert Ship - .26mg
TPA Blue Raspberry - .17mg
FA Vanilla Classic - .16mg
FA Vienna Cream - .16mg
FA MTS Vape - .125mg
FA Cookie - .16mg
Development: When I started working on this, I was looking for something that struck a good balance between a tobacco vape and something with a baked sweet feel. I found a lot of tobacco inspired juices leaned too much on the tobacco, or completely non-existent.
I started with cookie, RY4, and blue raspberry, in different ratios, and while it was good, it was somewhat lacking the complexity I like. I'm definitely not a single-flavour shake and vape person. I also tried different brands of flavours, but always gravitated back to Flavour Arts. That's not to knock others. I like The Flavor Apprentice as well.
At that point, I replaced the RY4 with Desert Ship, to maintain the tobacco, but figured that the more fruity notes of DS would give a bit more complexity to the raspberry via it's more fruit forward tobacco compared to the caramel notes of RY4.
That's when I decided to let DS and RY4 share some time in the mix.
It was coming along well, so I decided to try a couple of other fruit flavours as well. I tried substituting the Blue Raspberry with with other fruits (FA blueberry ripe, FA banana, & FA cherry), and liked the blueberry and cherry. I just liked Blue Raspberry better. Banana (a flavour I like) just kind of gets buried by the Desert Ship in particular, due to its profile, but I digress...
That's when I started adjusting levels, and throwing in various creams and vanillas, until settling on pretty much the finalized version.
As it happened, I was at about this stage when a flavour order came in that included my first order of MTS Vape, which I added to my cart largely from reading recommendations on this sub back in the day. At first I used WAY too much MTS Vape, which flattened everything, but once I found the sweet spot, I really liked how it added texture.
The best way I can describe MTS Vape is using a scotch analogy. I know some people who demand ice cubes, and some who only drink it neat. I don't have a hard and fast rule, but for scotches with a heavy smoke or earthy taste, I find a little water can bring out flavours that might be too subtle otherwise.
If you're working on a DIY flavour that you think is CLOSE to what you're aiming for, a couple of drops of MTS Vape might be what you're looking for... (another digression).
In any case, since I shuttered the business a couple of years ago, I haven't even been on this sub, but it was a slow day at work, and figured I'd share.

Thanks, all.
I've got one or two other recipes that I'll probably do a write up on because they took some time, including my first one, Spiced Oak, which started out as a Castle Long clone back when that was all the rage, but evolved into its own thing, and was the impetus for starting Coiled Juices. :)
Thank you for sharing! When I first made the change from "cigalikes" back in like 2013 RY4 was one of my go to flavors, and am putting this on the list of recipes to try with my next flavor order.
I'm a little on the new side to DIY, and looking at BCFs website I'm seeing three different RY4s... RY4 Asian, RY4 Double, and RY4 Type, do you have a recommendation for which of those to use?
Wow that’s awesome of you to share your recipe/journey/story with the community, thank you!! Just getting into DIY and happy to be a part of such exciting times in such a welcoming community!!! Going to add this recipe to my first order, thank you!!
