New to DYI/Bad Flavour/Muted Flavour
submitted over 4 years ago by AyufIBK

Hello! I know a ton of people have run in to this problem and I am one of them, I've read as much info as I could on DIY-ing after this disaster, I've been vaping for 3 years and I've never made something more disgusting myself. For the majority of my vaping time I bought others DIY juices and they seemed to be great, later on started vaping nicotine salts out of pods with production juices, got bored of that and wanted to go back to rebuildables. Now I use a Tesla WYE 85w with Augvape Intake Dual RTA. Me and my friend decided to give DIY a try, in our country we only can get one-shots that just weren't doing it for us, so we bought some TFA/CAP aromas and gave it a a shot, but it turned out awful. We also used a premix VG/PG/Nic that was 40/60 3mg nicotine. The Recipes we USED:

ALL THE RECIPES WERE MADE IN 100ML BATCHES

https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/121795

· Bavarian Cream (TPA) 4%.
· Cheesecake (Graham Crust) (TPA) 5%
· Strawberry (Ripe) (TPA) 10%
· Sweet Cream (TPA) 4%
· Vanilla Custard (TPA) 3%

This one steeped for 2 weeks, tastes awful [Learned that overflavoring is just a big mistake] I can't taste pretty much anything, the strawberry tastes like a rotting one, there might be a hint of cheesecake/vanilla.

https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/127149/Mikes%20Melons%20%28Cuttwood%20Monster%20Melon%20Clone%29

· Cantaloupe (TPA) 5%
· Mango (TPA) 5%
· Papaya (TPA) 5%
· Sweetener (CAP) 1%

This one tasted amazing at the start, we steeped it for about 2 weeks and the flavor faded, the only thing I could taste was cantaloupe, no sight of mango or papaya.

https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/343324/Neptunes%20Nectar%20clone

· Banana Cream (TPA) 5%
· French Vanilla (CAP) 1,75%
· Strawberry (Ripe) (TPA) 8%

This one also turned out quite bad, at first there was some strawberry, after a 2 week steep there was no hint of french vanilla nor strawberry, tasted purely of banana cream [I don't like banana flavored things in general so this is also a big factor, but my friend doesn't mind it and still agreed that this turned out bad]

https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/2173415/Jam%20Monster%20Blueberry%20-%2099.9%25%20Clone

· Blueberry Jam (CAP) 6%
· Cereal 27 (CAP) 4,50%
· Golden Butter (CAP) 7,50%
· Super Sweet (CAP) 3%

This one was the best out of all of them, it was too sweet for me, but my friend enjoyed it, this actually had a flavor profile, I could feel the CAP Cereal 27/Golden Butter and the Blueberry Jam. The only note from me that I'd use 1% of Super Sweet

https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/454944/Drapple%20juice

· Apple (TPA) 5%
· Cotton Candy (10% EM/Ethyl Maltol) (TPA) 2%
· Dragonfruit (TPA) 5%
· Koolada (TPA) 1%

This one wasn't too bad either, you could taste the apple and a hint of "wild berry taste" i'd say, but not Dragonfruit, this wasn't too bad to vape, but wouldn't mix it again, after this I learned that EM kills some flavors etc. so this might have been our mistake

https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/1229116/MilkyO%27s%20Milkman

· Caramel (Original) (TPA) 4%
· Double Chocolate (Dark) (TPA) 1%
· French Vanilla Deluxe (TPA) 0,50%
· Graham Cracker (Clear) (TPA) 5%
· Marshmallow (DX) (TPA) 8%
· Whipped Cream (TPA) 2%

This one started out weak, we tasted it SNV and put it away for 2 weeks, after that it seemed amazing for like 2 days, 3 days passed after vaping it and this recipe turned to hell, the flavor itself changed 180 degrees, at first you could taste the caramel, cracker, dark chocolate, but then all of that dissapeared and all we could taste was warm sugary air.

https://www.99juices.com/recipes/2500/

· TFA - Cinnamon Sugar Cookie 1%
· TFA - Apple Pie 10%
· TFA - Bavarian Cream 3%
· TFA - Sweet Cream 2%
· TFA - Vanilla Custard 4%

This one started out very strong on the cinnamon sugar cookie side, after a 2 week steep it got a little bit better with A LITTLE of apple pie flavor, added sweetener to it and it made it a bit more bearable, but still nothing that I'd mix again.

>Hope the notes help out a bit on the juices that we mixed, all credits go to those who created them, it just might be us and I am not saying that the recipes are bad in any way.

Our biggest mistake was going in to this blindly, we didn't do a lot of research before commiting to these recipes because we always would use one-shots, after the failure I invested a ton of time in to DIY and the mistakes people make, but the biggest question is: Most of these recipes have feedback to them, for some they just taste out of this world, meanwhile all we got is a pile of dissapointment. Yes we took recipes that were overflavoured, yes we didn't read about flavour profiles and etc. But how can people say that there are their daily vapes, can our taste buds differ that much? I'm probably a strawberry mute myself and all I get is sweetness out of strawberries or a flavour of a rotting one. Another question would be, can a VG/PG premix be bad/carry a muting. I want this to work out because I just can't afford buying Premium E-juices. Any help/recipes/criticism would be highly appreciated.

TL;DR:

Made juices, some of them were overflavored, some of them seemed fine, and all of them pretty much ended up being muted. Tried it on RDAs/RTAs/Subohm/Mesh RTA still tasted bad no matter the wattage/hardware. Looking for tips to carry on with DIY-ing without having to worry about just splashing around money on things I don't even enjoy vaping.

I can't comment much on the actual recipes or flavors used as I'm fairly new as well. However I will say that your first mistake was making 100ml "testers". I recommend staying under 30ml MAX for anything I've never tried before, I personally make 15-20ml testers before jumping to larger sizes bc I hate wasting supplies. It's also VERY important to single flavor test (SFT) your ingredients bc you may find that you can't taste certain flavors, other flavors may give you a horrible off-taste, etc.

Another tip I can give you would be to try out your heavy cookie/ cream/ bakery/ dessert/ custard type recipes out again after AT LEAST 4 weeks. For some reason those flavors almost always require super long steeping times, you might end up liking some you made after just a bit longer.

& I hate to be "that girl" but DIY (stands for Do It Yourself). Not trying to be condescending at all, but I wanted to bring that up because if you've been searching for DYI you may be missing out on some great resources.

It will probably help others to help you out a lot easier & quicker if you added the %s each flavor was used at in this post in the recipes so others don't have to click on links to find that info out - some of your issues could totally be caused by using flavors at too high or too low of a %!

Are you mixing by volume or by weight with a scale? Are you 100% certain your measurements are correct to the recipes as well (I've mixed up ingredient amounts before lol). Are you 100% sure that your VG, PG & nicotine are all still good (did you test all 3 in an unflavored mix together to check that they're all good & don't taste funky)? I recently ruined a few of my mixes by adding in AWFUL tasting nicotine, so now I'll always be sure to check my nic in an unflavored mix before I ever try to mix with it.

Don't get discouraged though!! this kind of post is exactly the right thing to do when what you're doing isn't working! Some more knowledgable members will be able to help you troubleshoot things even more

Thanks for your reply! Edited the post to have % instead of MLs, I know that DIY stands for Do it Yourself and I learned it the hard way://, just did research on the FAQ things and etc, which I should have done before commiting to DIY itself.

We left some of the cookie/cream/bakery E-Juices to sit for 4 weeks, we still have some that have been steeping for almost a month and they didn't get any better, to be totally honest with you, it seems that steeping is making them worse, or I am just going insane and overthinking the whole DIY thing.

We didn't mix on the scale because at that time we didn't have a small enough one, so we measured with syringes and in my opinion we got as close as we could, [Atleast I think that we measured everything super correctly]. We are giving this another shot and will be buying a scale for DIY, which I hope will help.

The VG/PG/Nic we didn't test on it's own, but it had some sort of a smell, which I wouldn't say was funky, but can't write it off as being good/bad, the nicotine part seems fine, I tasted some BAD nicotine before and this wasn't it [PROBABLY]. Pulling through all of this and I am willing to try over and over again, I enjoy the process of it and I don't want to go back to smoking

I think u/hesherette was trying to tell you it is DIY not DYI.

Oh, I didn't even realise that I misspelled it typing it out here, thanks for pointing that out, don't know what happened here haha.

You're so welcome! I commented below about testing your nic, PG & VG to figure out if one, 2 or all 3 of those could be bad just so you don't waste any more mixing supplies! Plus vaping unflavored can help reset your tastebuds/ prevent vaper's tongue. I mixed a few flavor tests up with nic I didn't know was bad & it was a bummer to waste so much time & money lol, the nic was light yellow, smelled fine but tasted AWFUL. If I had tested it beforehand I would've known to not use it :P

& below I also mentioned to grab a scale, I bought a $15-20 100 x 0.01g scale off Amazon & it works great! they're super cheap & wayyy easier than mixing by volume/ with syringes. much more accurate & quicker. it will definitely help you on your mixing journey :)

last but not least, I totally agree with everyone else saying the recipes you tried are pretty old & probably won't translate very well onto modern gear. it's pretty easy to find good, recent recipes if you search around on here! a lot of ppl talk about what they're vaping on & the sub recently voted on the 2020 Recipes of the Year - highly recommend you guys try some of those out. there are like 5-7 recipes in that thread that ppl voted on, hopefully you have some of the ingredients already :)

Going to try some of the recipes that were voted on here, got some leftover VG/PG/Nic that we used the last time, if the testers end up being bad, we'll know where the problem is. Thanks for being so informative and helping out! Really appreciate that

Those recipes are all old as hell. Consider making recipes from within the last few years. Gear has changed greatly, and so have recipes

Thanks for the reply! For the 2nd batch we're going to order we are going to look at 2018-2020 recipes. I really didn't think that an old recipe could turn out so bad!

Guess what, the only recipe that tasted good was from 2018. All the other recipes are outdated as hell and were created for old devices. You can also look at ATF (All the Flavors) to find recipes. But yeah, you’re not the only one who did this mistake. Happened to me as well, the first logical thing is to go on ELR and list by rating, what you end up with is a mess of 7-5 year old recipes. You can join the discord if you want and ask if those recipes are still working this day or if there are different, better versions of them. ATF was made free this week, so feel free to join the community over there as well.

While reading around in this subreddit, found out that ATF existed, going to search for recipes in there. I really thought before trying DIY mixing that it cant be so hard and an older recipe wouldnt do any harm, guess I was very very wrong

by BasicallyDesruptorover 4 years ago

Yeah but don’t worry, a lot of flavors are still used this day - so at least you didn’t waste all of your money. But I still strongly advise you to join the discord, DIY can get to an hobby really quick and it’s just great to share some experience or ask for anything you need over there! If you tell me what kind of profiles you are looking for I could give you some.

I joined the discord right after I made this post, already asked around about couple of things that interested me, going to use discord before I'll commit to any recipe, it's nice having people that can help you out in real time.

I think you guys need to taste check your bases first.

Your first recipe there is a really good tasting one despite it's age and insane percents. I've actually been considering starting work on a remix but have too many recipes on the go.

by AyufIBKover 4 years ago

Thanks for the reply! That could be the case, as I mentioned, I had a question if base could be bad/have a muting ability to it and I think you just answered that. We had super high hopes for the first recipe, but it turned out insanely bad, we still have like 50mls of it sitting(4 weeks of steeping) the scent changed a whole lot, but the flavor is still super muted.

The rotting strawberry taste for me makes it gagworthy. Might be biased tho, because I don't seem to enjoy the TFA Strawberry Ripe in any recipe.

These percentages are really high for a newer high power setup. Most of these older recipes were vaped on lower powered setups. That 1st recipe I would cut all those percentages in half to start. I don't enjoy tfa strawberry ripe either. If you can only get tfa and cap, try cap sweet strawberry or tfa strawberry as a replacement.

For refference I usually vape at around 40-60W, we are able to order pretty much all the known brands of aromas from other countries in Europe so that's not a problem, but at first we decided to give TFA a try because a ton of recipes used it. After some time I might give the Unicorn Milk a retry, I remember the production version of it and it was amazing. If you have any strawberry custard-ish recipes that you enjoyed, I'd love to hear back from you.

Yes it totally could be the nicotine, VG, PG or even a combination of 2 or all 3, considering ALL your mixes are bad & those are the 3 ingredients you used in every mix. It's usually the nicotine, bad nicotine can overpower other flavors, leave nasty tastes/ off-notes or even possibly mute mixes. Nic can go badly aka oxidize pretty quickly if it's not stored in a fridge or freezer, depends on the starting quality tbh. Nic is kinda picky, some ppl have no problems w it ever, some ppl get bad nic often.

VG & PG don't "go bad" very easily like nic does, but they can absorb water from the air over time, so if they're very old, stored in heat/ improperly etc they could be messing up your mixes as well. I recommend trying your nic, VG & PG in an unflavored mix (ratio of your choice is fine), it should mostly be tasteless but have a very slight sweetness bc of the VG. If that mix has a funky or weird taste, then make a mix of only PG+VG to determine if it is the nic making things bad or not.

EDIT: it could be your ingredients so def troubleshoot your nic, VG & PG, but I also recommend taking everyone else's advice regarding finding newer recipes! the %s used in a lot of older recipes are made for completely different types of vape devices & don't translate well on newer gear. try mixing some of the recent talked about recipes on here. search for the "recipe of the year" thread & try mixing some of those, Viva La Cola is super simple (only a few flavors needed) & is getting rave reviews

Thanks again for clearing things out, we bought from a person that used to make our DIY juices back in the day, we can't really get VG/PG in big amounts (usually 100ml each), so we decided to buy off him, which ended up as being a problem. I hardly doubt it that every mix could have ended up so bad without the VG/PG/Nic being the problem. We are going to buy VG/PG/Nic off a trusted website this time!

Do a 8Ml solo test for each flavor and try 1MLS every 5 days and see if you like the flavor and when you like it the best. Drop the sweeteners for now and after the solo tests you will do 2 flavor tests splitting up the recipe and repeat the process from solo. Now you can skip ahead and combine the 2 flavors with another 2 flavors or 1 if 3 flavor recipe. You might have to get a different version of the flavors to help you out because you can't stand the original. I will help you out if you want

So the one with tfa caramel original. Did you keep running it on the same coil without changing it? The caramel original has real sugars in it. It whacks out your coils quick. I don't use it. It is amazing tasting. A good alternative is flavourart caramel.

The double choc dark is also a coil destroyer. The last person I helped get into diy to get her feet wet we started with, she is a dessert girl:

FA caramel LB vanilla Ice Cream FA cream fresh Tfa ry4 dbl Fa fuji apple (she loves as single flavor) FW Graham cracker Cap Sweet Strawberry Fw butter pecan Purilum caramel coffee and milk (not exact name) FW butterscotch ripple LA Pina colada (very underrated as a single flavor) Cap sugar cookie FA cookie

Also, if I have anything you can make with the flavors above that I know is a solid recipe I will post it.

Banana Cream at about 2 or 3 percent with same cheesecake graham is decent actually okay with about 36 hrs steep, way better with 2 weeks.
