Noted Ep. 187: TOAST (ft. TeslaDelMar and Wolfwheeler)

WF Bread (Butter Toast) SC: ID10-T thought while not unpleasant, it didn't really taste like toast. Hint of butter. Very sweet. Most things you'd mix it with are going to be sweet so it probably wouldn't matter in a mix. Missing the bread. Sam thought it had a dark crispiness, but not much else. No bread. Buttery. Sam and TDM thought it tasted very similar to RF. Emily really liked it. Thought it did butter and dark crispiness really well. The dark crispiness is hard to find in most other flavours. Thought can create toast by adding some doughy body. To add the bready body Sam has used it with around 0.25% RF Baked Bread or WF Sweet Bread. Could also maybe use FLV Starch Base? Although WW tried to make a recipe using it and it didn't work. But when making a mix with toast toast isn't usually the main note. The focus is more on what is on the toast. So probably don't have to try to make the most perfect, well rounded toast, as long as it sells it enough in the mix. Emily thought as long as you have some crispiness and some buttery-ness, which WF has it'll probably be fine. Sam has used it with a touch of CAP Cereal 27 to and some more grainy-ness Or can use it to toast other bakeries. WW didn't get any dark crispy note. Thought it tasted like the conch style Mexican bread that had been left in the oven too long and had burnt. Emily tested at 2%. Sam tested at 3%. ID10-T tested at 2% and 3%.

SA Breakfast: Supposed to be jam on toast. It's mostly just a strange jam. Really tastes jammy. But what berry is there tastes a bit odd. Like under-ripe green strawberries. Weirdly tart and has an under-ripe feel to it. Fairly indistinct. The tartness wouldn't be odd if it was something like raspberry jam. Seems like it could be bent into a raspberry pretty easily. But the green, tart note would probably prevent you making it into strawberry jam. He found the toast lacked bready body. Like toast crumbs. WW found at 1% it was instantly buried by whatever he mixed it with. At 5% as a SF he got the under-ripe note but the toast was off. Tasted burnt. Both ID10-T and WW didn't get any butter from it at all. ID10-T has tried recipes that used it and were really good. ID10-T tested at 2% steeped for a week. WW tested at 1%, 3% and 5%.

RF Apple Jam with Toast SC: A bit thin. A little harsh. Has a kind of citrus. Sam got a pretty upfront brown sugar/caramel note. More like apple butter than apple jam. Apple isn't particularly bright.

RF Strawberry Jam with Toast SC: A bit thin. Needs some butter. But the jam more or less tastes like strawberry jam. A little soft, not very punchy. Brighter than OOO Strawberry Jam. Doesn't have that deep, cooked down taste. Toast note isn't bad, it is there. Probably wouldn't want to vape as a SF. Would need to boost the strawberry and fill in the toast, add butter. But it's a good start/base.

Some people in the comments section mentioned that SA Pain Grille is the best toast flavour.

SA Pain Grille: Emily and WW were disappointed. Leans too heavily on the crispy edge. Really dark. Of the different % WW tried it at found it best at 1%. At 1% was like eating the scraped off burnt bits of toast. 3% was just burnt crust. 5% was chemical garbage. Totally different toast note to that in SA Breakfast. WW tested at 1%, 3% and 5%.

None of the flavours tried this week were discernable as white or brown bread etc. Just a thin layer of generic toast flavour. If you want to make it notable as a particular kind of bread you'll have to add other flavours to do that. Might be able to use some of these flavours to toast other things, like a fresh bread flavour or maybe other bakeries.

RF Blueberry Jam with Toast SC: Blueberry is there, but is thin. More natural, authentic. Not a candy BB. Not very strong. No BB off notes. Same toast note as RF Apple/Strawberry Jam with Toast. Kind of thin, buttery and not much actual bread. Has been used successfully in recipes. Could maybe pair with FLV Blueberry Muffin which has a good, cooked blueberry note.

Just Jam Strawberry Toast - Chefs (One Shot): 20% may be too high. Powerful jammy strawberry. Very much SB jam. A little bit of bread or toast underneath. A bit of richness, like you would get from butter. But not a distinct butter taste. Contains a lot of sucralose. Intensely sweet. Also has just a touch of a weird off note. Like the bread was moldy before it was toasted. Very similar to the moldy off note in FLV Waffle. Off note was very light, but just enough to ruin it. May be better at a lower %? Could use it at a much lower % as a jam ingredient? But OOO Strawberry Jam would be a better option for that. ID10-T mixed at 20%, which is what Chefs recommend.

Fantasy Jam on Toast - Chefs (One Shot): Very clearly SB jam on toast. Jam does taste like it was made in part with under-ripe SB. Tasted like they may have built it around SA Breakfast. But it is significantly sweeter and SB is bolder. No distinct butter note, but there is some richness. SB has a lot of EM. There's a decent amount of sucralose, but not an obscene amount. The toast has some dry toast body to it. They did a pretty good job with this OS. Could ignore that it's supposed to be a one shot and use as a flavour. ID10-T thought it would be a better option than any of the single flavour SB jam on toast flavours tried this week.
