Question about PG/VG from newbie
submitted over 4 years ago by Idiotsandcheapskate

Hi. Finally going to DIY (thanks, NY state).

I never liked high VG liquids. I have always been buying high PG ones, and loved them. I usually vape Menthol type juices. However, I'd like to try to make something fruity/creamy. All recipes for such things call for high VG. My question is: if I make them with high PG instead, will it completely ruin the flavor?

Pg is said to hold flavor better from what I've read, it only really seems to effect viscosity, otherwise it should be just fine. Maybe start with less flavor and add more if needed is the only precaution I might take personally, until you can experiment enough and understand how it will effect the taste for you

You can definitely change the VG/PG ratio of a recipe to fit your desire. I wouldn't say it changes the flavor too much (won't ruin a recipe). I do adjust my ratio sometimes for throat hit, if the flavors are a little sharper (cinnamon, mango, etc.) then I go with a bit higher VG (60, 70) than my default 50/50 ratio. But that's just me.

In my experiences anything less than 20% VG in a mix gets really odd. Otherwise its good. But try for yourself and do whats enjoyable!

N.Y. drove me into the DiY thing as well. At first I hated them for it, but now I’m kinda grateful! Welcome, you’re gonna love this shit.

Recipes do not call for any ratio of PG and VG.

A recipe is only the flavors and their percentages.

I mean... I mostly looked at e-liquid-recopies website, and all the recipes call for certain amount of PG and VG.

They don't. Those are defaults left in when the creator mixed it. It's not part of the recipe.

Ok, good. So, I can use any ratio I'd like?

Sorry if this question sounds stupid, I am just very new to this and am not sure if certain ration work better for certain recipes.

While this is mostly true, it is not always true

General rule is

Flavour/throat hit = PG Clouds/thickness = VG

All my recipes are blended with PG/VG ratio accounted for.

Long story short : VG = makes big clouds, the liquid is quite thick PG = holds the flavour, the liquid is thin and runny.

If you have a shitty tank, you might want to stay at 70% VG in order to avoid leaks.

Personally I have a vaporesso SKRR-S ($20, nothing fancy but it's quality) I use 50/50 vg/pg, the flavour is great, the clouds are big, I ve never had a leak.

I don't see the point of making PG-only liquids, I'd say you should put at least 20 or 30% of VG in it. But why not... Why not... Just try a small batch and let us know mate !

Maybe. I like throat heat and dislike clouds. High VG gives me a feeling like there's a hairball in my throat.

VG is also "sweeter" for itself. Don't stick too much to the argument that PG is better for flavor, imho it's only partially true!! If you dye and you are using a subohm-device, you should try 80/20 (VG/PG) base!! Most flavors (and premixed flavors) come in pure PG, so with 80/20 you'll land near 70/30!! I really like higher VG because it's sweeter (not the flavor but the pure VG)!

Of course, if you are a using a toy-device like a Caliburn, or MTL, or just low sub-ohm devices (0.6-0.9), stay with high PG. I have to write this because we are on Reddit.

Yes changes to pg ratio can effect the tast and steeping of the recipe. I would get 3 different recipes and try 50/50 30% and 20% vg for all 3 and 1 60% vg. This should give you a reference for changes to recipes. BTW try ws-23 and mint with flavor art fresh cream and your favorite fruit flavor and different vanilla flavors. Can help you with the recipe build for your first few
