Tuesday Tutorial 1.19.21: Trinities (a year or four later)
submitted over 4 years ago by isuamadogRenaissance Mixer

Morning Mixers,

Today, I want to talk about building blocks for recipes. I had a really fun time doing Noted Episode 130: Blessed Trinities almost a year ago. Was also my first time on any kind of show and -- yeah -- ignore the pixelation. I have since learned to use video chat (thank you, 2020).

What exactly is a Trinity?

A Trinity is a stone, base or layer that has 3 ingredients to make a complete profile. That’s it.

Why use a Trinity?

Trinities are helpful for (new mixers as well as old) to use a building block to eliminate some guesswork in making a final mix.

How does a combination even become a Trinity?

Well, here you can blame two people: u/EdibleMalfuntion and u/Apexified. The first baby jesus was the Edible Blueberry Trinity born on October 28th, 2016: Blueberry Cinnamon Pastry v2. 4 years old! Can you believe it?!? Still good. This spawned the trend of calling it the Blueberry Trinity which then begat the slew of Blessed Trinities led by Apex. Later it was requested to be a Flavor of the Week by yours truly and away we go!

How do I use a Trinity?

Here you have some great starter blocks that have been un/officially approved by the greater diy community to hit the right notes to flesh out the suggested profile. They don’t always work together, and they’re not perfect for everyone, but they do what they have what it takes to get you going. Stack ‘em, blend ‘em, play with them. Do what you please, it’s DIY and only you have to vape it!

How has anyone used a Trinity?

Jim Morrison said it well: “This is the best part of the trip. This is the trip. The best part. I really like.” Here’s a few examples (anything in the comments will be added to this list!):

Cheesecake:

Triple the Bumble

Lime Ar Why Fore

Lemon Curd Cheesecake

Yellow Cake:

Indulgence

Strawberry:

Daveberry Cheesecake

Strawberry Daquiri

Bourbon Trinity:

Back Nine

Ice Cream:

Dripwich ++

The Hetch

Holy Trinity Ice Cream (great example of stacking)

Comments:

  1. Which is your favorite existing recipe that features a Trinity?
  2. How have you used a Trinity or modified it?
  3. Do you have a replacement (or sub for the missing flavor) for the Blackberry Trinity?
  4. Opinion: Is the WF Island Mango needed in the Mango Trinity?
  5. Any new combos for us to try for a profile that hasn’t been ‘approved’ yet? (Gin Trinity anyone?)
  6. Any Blessed Trinities that need to be knocked down a notch or reworked?

I’m pooped. Help me out in the comments with recipes and ideas!

Keep mixin’ and keep sharin’,

- i

Edit: After having done (most of) the research for this post, I realized that the Daveberry Trinity is actually dated prior to the Blueberry Trinity on atf by about a month. It was Ed's that was recognized and named as a Trinity first, leading to subsequent names like Daveberry Trinity.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants a Cherry Trinity.

My Spidey-Senses weere tingling when I read the notes on SSA Juicy Cherry by /u/kittybit8 . He says "There aren't much in the inhale going on for this. Where it shines are on the exhale overall." That's the exact opposite of INW Cherries - all inhale and nothing else. Trying to "fill in the middle, /u/ID10-T suggested FA Apricot. Of course, I'm MISSING ONE FLAVOR (hahaha). Would anyone who has these flavors care to mix some up and report back on the results?

Otherwise perhaps SSA Compote Cherry could be viable for an actual all-three-cherry thing. Just low, somewhere around 0.5% or so.

Going to do just this today and will report back. Working on a Cherry cake roll. Was using 1% Compote and 1% juicy and was good. But I think trying the 3 together may be perfect

This sounds like a great combo.

I love the Strawberry trinity. I'm pretty strawberry blind but this trinity works well for me.
Now i also discovered OOO SB Jam and WF SB Baked, so i might not use the trinity that much anymore, but still. Great one for the SB blind people.

Obviously i must plug my own shit here right?

Vanilla Cream Strawberries

|Co|Flavor|%| |:-|:-|:-| |JF|Biscuit|1| |FLV|Cream|1.5| |INW|Shisha Strawberry|3| |FA|Strawberry (Red Touch)|2| |JF|Strawberry (Sweet)|1.5| |FLV|Vanilla Pudding|2| |TFA|Vanilla Swirl|1|

Cheesecake trinity is also pretty banging, but i didn't use that a whole lot.
I have one recipe steeping with it, but it's not done yet so can't comment on that for now.

I am strawberry blind, this is my favorite strawberry recipe! I can always taste it, has a good mouthfeel, and the biscuit seems to make everything even better somehow. Thanks TBX-12

3 points

by TBX-12over 4 years agoMixologist

That makes me so happy that you like it! The biscuit gives a deeper dark base where the other flavors rest on and gives it a bit more depth and dimension then just a strawberry cream.

Again, glad you like!

So i did good dad?

by isuamadogover 4 years agoRenaissance Mixer

the one who did NOT do good was me. If i had tried this tb4 sooner, I probably would have put it in the ROTY thread and I think sometime later today, it's going in there. I just need to try it again after a bit of steep so I can speak intelligently about it.

I’m a sucker for s&c recipes and have several of my own in daily rotation. I can proudly say that this is one of the few I still mix that isn’t my own. Just a lovely mix. I just cut the strawberry %’s slightly

3 points

by TBX-12over 4 years agoMixologist

Nice to hear! For me the % are spot on, but as i said i’m a strawberry mute. So for ‘normal’ people it might be a bit too much. The beauty of DIY is to customize it to your exact liking, so lower it if it’s better that way. Enjoy!

I'm strawberry blind as well, just curious if you get any flavor from the strawberries in your recipe when you SFT them?

3 points

by miplantover 4 years ago

I have issues tasting strawberries. I can taste the inw shisha strawb and the jf sweet sft, but not much from red touch. Combining them seems to make the sum greater than the parts.

2 points

by TBX-12over 4 years agoMixologist

I get an earthy green note if that makes sense. Like eating a ‘green fruit’ while having a bad cold so your nose is plugged up and cant taste anything. It’s weird. Also kiwi’s are weirdly just a generic green fruit.

Obviously i can taste the real fruits just fine, just the artificial stuff that’s weird to me

2 points

by jasone414over 4 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

Makes total sense. Strawberries are just so weird and I'm trying to figure them out. For example, Red Touch gives me no flavor, I can taste JF as a SNV but if I let it steep the flavor disappears, and with the Shisha I get a hint of strawberry with a syrupy base. I've only found a couple strawberries that I get good flavor from on SFT and I've tried a lot of them.

I have these flavors. I’m going to have to try this one. I have 12 strawberries since I’m strawberry blind so it will be cool to be able to use some for a change.

My favorite is the Cheesecake Trinity! It's an excellent base to start with and you can throw almost anything on top of it. I recently used it to make the following recipe. The trinity was tweaked a bit, as TFA CCGC takes over for me, and I swapped CAP NYCC for PUR (which are really almost the same). I like my cheesecake super rich so I added a bit of LB VIC. For Me, the trinity by itself tastes a little too cheesy after steeping and the VIC helps with that. (cheesecake is not supposed to actually taste like cheese)

Cran-Orange Cheesecake v2

Ingredient|% :---|---: Bakery Orange (SSA)|1.50 Cheesecake (Graham Crust) (TPA)|0.50 Cranberry (Flavorah)|1.25 New York Cheesecake (Purilum)|2.00 Orange Marmalade (VTA)|1.50 Super Sweet (CAP)|0.25 Vanilla Ice Cream (LB)|2.00 Yes, We Cheesecake (INAWERA)|3.00

Flavor total: 12%

All I need to do now is try out SSA Cranberry Jam instead of FLV Cranberry

Edit: BTW this is on ELR if anyone wants to try it

damn! This looks great.

Thanks! The cranberry doesn't stand out as much as I wanted it to, it's the very top high note of the recipe, the first thing you taste for just an instant, and then gets drowned out by the orange. I could play around with it a bit, maybe lower the Oranges. FLV Cranberry is probably close to its upper limit tho. Really wondering what SSA Cranberry Jam would do to the mix, and just got it in with all that QP stuff!

Thank you! It makes me so happy that everyone likes the look of my recipe! PUR NYCC can be subbed with CAP at the same percentage. Give it a try!

  1. The Trinity Vanilla Ice Cream.
  2. Yes
  3. Maybe FM Blackberry
  4. I don't think so
  5. Someone should make a cantaloupe trinity
  6. I still think the blueberry trinity would be improved by switching from FA Bilberry Ripe to JF Blueberry.

I wish we'd called them triplets or tercets instead of trinities.

"I wish we'd called them triplets or tercets instead of trinities."

Is it because too many people are trying to force a threesome when 2 might do?

5 points

by ID10-Tover 4 years agoWinner: Best Recipe of 2019 - Counter Punch

I'm afraid too many people see Trinity and think of something holy and immutable. Tercets and especially triplets just sound more fun and less sacrilegious to play with.

4 points

by isuamadogover 4 years agoRenaissance Mixer

To be fair, solo they do what they're asked to do. u/Jd_ironlife's recipe above is a great example of bending something to your tastes as a starting block to take some guesswork out. I think that was the ultimate goal of them and I'm glad to see that here as an example of how information shared becomes information used.

tercet and triplet sounds way less catchy and maybe dummer than trinity though. can't deny that.

This post is incredibly helpful. I’ve been struggling with flavors, brands and recipes. I’m going to make the blackberry, blueberry, cheesecake and mango exactly as they are listed and I will give feedback on them as is. I’m very excited. Thank you Dog.

Is there an apple trinity? I’ve been trying to come up with a apple berry cream recipe and this could help out. Especially since there’s already 3 berry trinities recipes. I was thinking red apple, dark berries and lots of creamy goodness.

5 points

by Jd_ironlifeover 4 years ago

Not that I'm aware of but I could imagine it including FA & JF Fuji, maybe FA or TFA Pear. Maybe CAP Double apple. I guess it really depends on if you're going for a red or green apple

5 points

by isuamadogover 4 years agoRenaissance Mixer

There is a red apple trinity suggested by slashaLo in apex’s post linked in the section “how does a combination even become a trinity?”. I remember liking it until I realized I’m a whore for Fa Fuji and I went back to my old ways. There’s a saying about old dogs and new mixes...

3 points

I found it. I just found the flavors I need for the apple trinity at Bull City. I’m definitely going to try it. 😊

I can also mix the Holy Trinities ice cream as I will have everything to make it as well. I wonder how a mango ice cream would taste 👅.

6 points

by billj81over 4 years ago

Made it and it’s good but Island Mango, while a wonderful flavor, isn’t needed. The mango trinity goes 2 ways to me. As Dave previously suggested 4% Vt and 2% Flv is a better juicy realistic mango. The 1-2-3 Mango trinity is sweeter and more syrupy to me so different applications.

Good to know, thanks 😊

If you're going for Mango Ice cream, you may also want to lower or leave out the HS VBIC. I find that it gives a more dark and spicy flavor to the ice cream, and tend to like it better @ .25, but that is entirely up to your tastes.
