Which is extra unfortunate because I love dessert vapes. Is there anyone else out there that gets an old grease/cardboard/maybe yeast-ish smell from these types of flavoring? I can’t put my finger on the smell, but it’s more nasal than taste and it permeates an entire mix and makes it unvapeable for me. Steeping doesn’t help.
Oddly some flavors are okay. I don’t get this from Tfa VBIC, or vanilla swirl, but it’s super strong in tfa bavarian cream and cap vanilla custard and ny cheesecake. I can also taste it in commercial juice. I don’t think it’s DAAP related.
Is there a way to nail down what component is bothering me? I’ve seen flavor compositions pulled up on some of the diy or die videos. Is that accessible for regular folks? I was thinking I could nail it down by comparing components, but maybe that’s too complicated..
Any help is greatly appreciated! Recommendations for flavors or help with the process of figuring this out or anyone that’s tastes this too so I know I’m not a total weirdo!
It’s probably butyric acid. It’s just disgusting and I don’t know why flavor companies even think it’s okay to use. It tastes like old crayons that have sat in the sun or something. Or like old used cooking oil
Yes!!! That is it exactly!! Once (as a child) I made brownies with 15 year old olive oil and that’s the closest I’ve been to being able to describe the taste. Bakery in the background, but an overwhelming old oil taste. Old crayons is spot on too. Thank you!! If nothing else, at least now I can accurately describe it, and that helps. Have you found any good cream type flavors that don’t use this?
Okay, then yes, it’s for sure the butyric acid. That stuff is so nasty. It took me a long time to figure out what the problem was! It may be boring, but some tried and true creams are TFA’s Bavarian Cream and Vanilla Swirl. The DX and original Bavarian creams are both good imo but in different ways. I even mix the two sometimes. Inawera’s Yes We Cheesecake and Vanilla Ruyan Custard are good. Capella Vanilla Custard V1 is like a golden standard, and their NY Cheesecake. Most meringues like Flavor Arts are safe, as well as most whipped creams. My jam right now is Vape Train’s Yoghurt Drink and I’m mixing it with everything. If you’ve ever had Calpico/Calpis or Yakult yogurt drinks, it tastes just like it! Omfg it’s so good I went and got a 4 oz bottle of it. There are lots of good creams out there, but the ones I mentioned are pretty standard!
This is seriously so helpful, that nasty flavor has haunted me for years and kept me from trying so many dessert flavors. I’ve had my eye on the INW ruyan custard, and I’ve heard great things about yes, we cheesecake. I’ll pick both of those up as well as fa meringue. Have you tried VT banana custard? Been eyeing that one as well but I don’t want to buy it and immediately have to chunk it. I saw your old post about butyric acid after you mentioned it, and just wanted to say if you ever make that list, I’d love to see it.
Hi. Unfortunately, I don’t think any manufacturer releases all of the components used, just some. They do keep their „recipes“ secret.
Ah ok, good to know. It seemed like a pretty involved process anyway. Do you have any recommendations for custards or creams that are good but have a different profile than tfa or cap’s custards? Or are they all basically the same? I haven’t tasted many of the newer flavors because I’ve avoided mixing desserts for so long.
same problem. i like vanilla, a friend gave me vanilla flavor that i liked a lot
i bought 3 different vanilla flavors that all have that "smelly taste" afterwards, which stays in mouth/nose, most vanilla mixtures i bought are fine but some still have that "aftertaste/taint" (just googled the word)
when i first experienced that it reminded me but i couldnt figure out what
i thought medicine, hospitals and ended at dentists, maybe the air that they blow in your mouth has a very small vanilal flavor??
because i live in germany the brands probably wont help you but im interested too if there is some indication what causes this (is bourbon vanilla a special kind and causes this?? i think not)
You'd have to test the main Vanilla flavors and VBIC flavors, as they're the most used. Just go to e-liquid-recipes -> flavors -> search vanilla and sort the search results by ratings/used, then you'll get like 20+ results, which you all have to test separately, using the recommended single flavor %es, or diy or die-notes on YouTube.
I'll do the same, as I cant taste much of CAP Vanilla Custard. Which is one of the most used, no°1.
Also test the version 2 of Vanilla Custard, from TPA/TFA and from CAP. Many liquid-makers are using those new ones, so they can claim that their liquid is more healthy than others (no Diacetly, etc.). Unfortunately, those "healthier" flavors taste like nothing to many people. It will be a lot of work but this way you can identify which flavor is the culprit and try to avoid these juices. Notice, that in some countries / cultures / vape societies most commercial juices use that new "healthier" flavors. For example in Germany (Bio-Wahn), it's like a religion, many people believe only in "healthy" stuff, so German Juices often, err very often, are not strong enough in flavor, not sweet enough, a.s.o. (Avoria, etc.) but people are used to it because.... it is modern to think that way and most juice-makers don't want to be blamed for using the wrong ingredients, even if the concentrations (what get's into your body) are somethat low. They'll avoid flavors with questionable ingredients at all cost in order to comply with -> religion ;-) And the vape shops here offer 95% only juices made in Germany, so some people buy their juices outside the country :)) but most will follow the religion and vape Made in Germany.
You're in the Dye-Section of Reddit. We mostly talk about ingredients = flavors. As I understand you, your question is about commercial juices. There is no other solution, you've to test.
