Some of my DIY e-liquids are extremely harsh on the throat. Why?
submitted almost 5 years ago by luciferlovesWD40

I'm using 70/30 VG/PG. 3mg nic.

Maximum of 12~15% flavor. I just don't get it.

Thanks.

Hi. One of the first things to check is if it’s not your nicotine. Mix up a batch of flavorless with 3mg nicotine and vape it. Is it harsh?
Secondly, if you‘re new to DIY, then you should be following recipes and not ordering random unknown flavors. Good recipes on ATF/ELR are balanced and no, do not substitute brands!

Last of all, read the FAQ/Beginner‘s Guide on the sidebar, watch/read flavor reviews. If you want to be successful, you need to put in a bit of effort. Good luck and happy holidays.

12-15% would typically be a lot for single flavor concentrates. Overall percentages of a mix means jack shit.

Also, you might be sensitive to some certain types of concentrates. Ex. I can barely use CAP Sweet Tangerine without it ripping my throat to shreds.

Which flavors are you having issues with here?

I've had other experiences before with creams, no problems at all.

So, I made my first batch of different flavors last night. One of the mixes that I had problems with was 6% TPA Kiwi Double & 3% Koolada. .

Do the harshness from flavourings mellow out through time?

In some cases they can mellow out yes, but it really depends on the concentrate.

The average for TFA Kiwi Double is 2-3%, so you might have actually mixed it way too high, which could have caused your issue.

Try and lower it to about 2.5% and see what happens.

Some kiwi concentrates can be a bit harsh.

I won't mention the 3% koolada, although it sounds crazy to me.

Koolada at 3 would kill my throat. I usually use it at like 1 tops.

Kiwi is one of the few fruits I have problems with harshness, also. It does not seem to steep out either, like citrus can.

What I obsereve in my vaping time of 3 years is that almost all flavours are harsh for me after some time when you are not using high nic. I was trying to get the best flavours , the most popular ones even the ones with best marketingns before that I bought a shit to of flavours to mix that I used to try make my own recipe but all failed.

After that ² yeara of vaping I found a few that were good to vape but in the end I setled on strawbery vapes that are not as excelently tasty as some other mixes but they are enjoyabble to vape even without flavour

Thanks , the main point is not to go after a certain flavour you like to eat or smell as I was doing it and wasting money and time.If its hars it will stay harsh ⁹⁵% even if you lover thepercentage, if the only problem is that the liquid is sweet thats the way you go. Sorry for my bad engiah and drunkness

is the koolada close to being expired? ive seen what koolada looks like when it expires and its a sore sight for sure. have you tried ws23?

Well... I live in Brazil, so all the flavors I get are re-bottled. But I don't think it's expired.

By the way, WS23 doesn't give the "coolness" that I want, unless I drop a shit ton of it.

thats actually impressive. ive made some icy juice with ws23 and its so cold it makes ya shiver! but everyone is different. have you tried menthol concentrate? it is very easy to figure out.

I use 0 PG and it sounds like you might want to.

PG amplifies flavors in a way.. and is also responsible for the throat hit part.

Look into going "VG Max".

I use vg based nic to get around this, but also, I have found that with commercial juices, if I don't have the wattage high enough on my mod it will eventually get harsh for some reason?

First of all, try mixing less, follow the % that is written on the box. Then, I'd check my wattage, turn it up higher a bit, with less/more air.

Basically all the flavors I have are harsh on my throat except for one. Maybe it's just because my flavors are old since they've been sitting there for a while, but they were all harsh the first time I would use them after purchasing. I basically gave up on any flavor except the one that doesn't kill my throat. Which is TFA Pineapple.

Yeah man... quite disappointing for a starter DIY.
