So, in the sort of distant past /u/ID10-T challenged me to try my hand at Goober Grape, or more accurately I'm pretty sure what he said was "Do it, you won't". Either way, I spent a good bit of time working on it, trying to get other folks to try it, sending samples out to friends for feedback, etc. With something approaching Dave's endorsement, I have come to present it to you all here. This is my goober grape.
So, here's my kind of, sort of, early Christmas present to DIY_Ejuice, Gruber Grape.
Brand | Flavor | Percentage ---|---|--- CAP | Concord Grape w/ Stevia | 2.5% INW | Grape(s) | 1.5% TFA | Peanut Butter DX | 5.5% FW | Hazelnut | 1.0% FLV | Beer Nuts | 0.15% WF | Croissant SC | 2.0% FLV | Starch Base | 0.5% FW | Sweetener | 0.5%
Some might say that Die Hard is a Christmas movie, others refuse to acknowledge that. What I believe to be indisputable however, is that Die Hard’s antagonist Hans Gruber planned nearly every detail of his heist perfectly. What detail did Gruber fail to account for? Lunch.
When you’re hungry, you’re distracted, and when you’re distracted you make mistakes. Gruber was no exception. Underestimating John McClane might be something we all chalked up to hubris. Then again, it could just as easily have been that Gruber was trying to expedite things as his stomach protested the long day at Nakatomi Plaza. Gruber needed to pack himself a lunch, and what is the single most American lunch he could have packed to further solidify his claim that he was a hostage and not, in fact, the leader of the criminals who had stormed the plaza? Peanut butter and jelly. That’s right. I submit that the key to preventing the Die Hard franchise from making it past the first installment was little more than a quaint sandwich that could have helped sell Gruber’s claim that he was an american, and further prevented him from making non-trivial mistakes that cost him his escape in the end. This… is that sandwich.
So lets break down the actual recipe, yeah?
Okay, so there are 3 things I was absolutely certain of going into this one: PB DX, Concord Grape w/ Stevia, and INW Grape(s) would be core to success here.
Jam: I was absolutely certain from the minute that I tasted CAP Concord Grape that the Concord grape and Grape(s) would be enough to sell grape jam authentically. A light touch of FW Sweetener really helps push the sugary sweet jam aspect and separate it from the other two elements.
Peanut Butter: TFA's Peanut Butter DX is still, in my opinion, the gold standard for Peanut Butter flavors, and in this case it needed a little help from FW Hazelnut to help it remain present, and FLV Beer nuts to add a touch of salt and to help it stand up separately from the jam and bread.
Bread: Plain ass white bread, this should be simple, right? This was honestly where I struggled more than anything else. I came to the conclusion that WF Croissant would be too dry and flakey on its own, a little too authentic to an actual croissant. So I needed to make it a little chewier, a little gummy. FLV Starch base brings the croissant back down from its high horse and turns it into a much more authentic bread rather than pastry.
I'm calling for a 7 day steep, but I can't say I feel it needs the extra time, if you're impatient it's good right off the shake but it should fully come into its own in the course of a week.
I worked so hard on this profile, for so long, as did several others, and this guy just, I mean he just, he just... made like it in like 3 tries. FML!
This is the recipe that an entire subreddit was created in pursuit of, /r/GooberGrapeVape. It truly is a Christmas Miracle!
oh my days I have everything for this. thank you so much.
Oh man! That's tremendously exciting! Please, if you do try it, let me know what you think!
Mine is so close to yours, but I just couldn't get to the finished product.
I had flavorah pb in the mix, and then I tried wf honey roasted peanuts, never tried beer nuts. I think the sweetener brand is important too. I tried so many with cap super sweet and they steeped wrong, puriljm super sweet was what I was working with. I also had a low percentage of tfa grape juice in there as well.
Sweetener choice was a very calculated decision
Super sweet contains preservatives and can mute stuff pretty badly, this needed nothing but sucralose, which also meant TFA was out of the question. FW or FLV are the only ones I'd bother throwing into this profile.
Im afraid to taint my 2 favorite Nuts with another Grape tragedy of a recipe... But Foment Life’s “Arnie Palmer” was my summer favorite, so I’m pretty psyched to mix up this reckless sandwich.
Order placed to fill in the gaps from my flavors to mix this . . . lots of anticipation!
I'm excited to hear what you think!
Order should arrive tomorrow with the missing concentrates for this. Hopefully, I'll have time to mix it up and let it steep for the full 7. I'm really excited for this given your semi-recent epiphany of pears and a PB&J aficionado like ID10-T giving it a ringing endorsement.
of course I am missing one flavour and it is the sweetener.. will include it in my next order for sure!
Do you have any other sweeteners on hand?
I think you could maybe get on without it but it is one of the rare few recipes in my opinion that is actively improved with a little sweetener
I think the only real sweetener I have in my inventory is CAP Super Sweet (ELR Stash)
Back when you made the comment in the other sub about the Beer Nuts I tried the recipe and replaced FW Sweetener with CAP Super Sweet, but now I want the real deal.
So far I was hesitant to buy FW Sweetener, because Chefs only has it in a 30ml size or bigger. From my experience with CAP Super Sweet, I only use 1 drop per 10ml if at all, my grandchildren will probably still benefit from that bottle..
Either way I will put it in my next order
Holy shit. Congratulations. Eight years. That's as long as Guts was on the boat in Berserk.
what did I miss?
oh shit i thought this was r/GooberGrapeVape/ - created 11/11/2016 - because I'm functionally illiterate. Four years*.
hah, I mean... this is very actively a goober grape recipe.4 years is still a pretty damn good stretch for a profile to go without being fulfilled to satisfaction.
That said, this is /u/ID10-T's baby, so until he says otherwise, there's still reason to chase after a more refined or better version of the recipe.
I can't find WF Croissant in my country. What if I use FA Croissant instead? Same thing with starch base too.
Not familiar with FA croissant, if it is light and fairly similar to bread crust it should play fine. Percentage may need adjustment.
The starch base is important for the white bread feel though. Can't really replace it without upsetting the apple cart somehow
