anyone else able to "taste" ws-23?
submitted almost 5 years ago by [deleted]

I haven't been able to enjoy any coolants sadly. I love the cooling effect of ws-23 but contrary to popular opinion I can actually get a taste from it. It seems to ruin all my flavors and give off this weird plastic note. Is there anything else out there besides WS-23 and Koolada? Koolada is slightly better for me.

I was just looking into new coolants. FA has something called polar blast.

That’s a minty flavour with cooling in it I believe

Polar blast is just coolant. Use a mix of polar blast and WS-23 to get cooling on the inhale and exhale.

Just looked it up you’re right. Always thought it was meant to be like the polar bear mints

What percentage would you recommend. Would you say it gives the slushy effect?

Looking at the data sheet for polar blast, it seems like it is mostly koolada (ws-3) and some methyl lactate iirc

I do not get any discernable aftertaste from 0.5% WS-23, if I want more cooling effect I'll use a blend of different cooling agents.

The widely available cooling agents are menthol, koolada, WS-23 and menthyl lactate.

Menthyl lactate (CAS # 17162-29-7) (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/28358) is available as a powder, and in FA Polar Blast.

Koolada I don't like, ws23 tastes slightly menthol to me, like a treebor extra strong mint, without the mint. I like ws23 at low doses, personally I use at 1 drop per 10ml, 2 if I'm feeling extra cool. Mixed up some 007 cola, and at .5% it's up there at being too much.

I've never tasted it, and I use it up to 0.8%

Yeah, I'm fine with menthol but ws coolant definately has a funky taste which ruins my mixes at any level where I get decent cooling.

i haven't noticed any real taste from ws23, but it seems a little strong for me. are there any that aren't as strong as ws23? I usually only add around 0.1% or a few drops but even then it can be intense and overwhelm the flavor of the mixture

How can it overwhelm the flavor if you can't taste it???

I'm assuming they mean that the cooling feeling/ sensation can overwhelm the flavors even tho it doesn't have a discernable taste to them. Im not the original commenter tho, just offering my experience as I'm similar to them in the sense that too much coolant can completely overpower other flavors in a recipe if used too high

Yes exactly this. I int taste any flavor, the cooling effect seems to overwhelm everything else.

I used to be a manufacturer/wholesaler long ago so my memory is kinda dodgey. But, from what I remember is that it tends to go bad and get a chemical taste unless you are continually making fresh batches suspended in PG from the powder/crystals.

I was going to recommend OP make their own coolant from menthol crystals, just dilute in PG to your liking. super cool (bad, unintentional pun) as you can tailor the menthol strength according to your tastebuds & preferences! You may be able to dissolve the menthol crystals in VG or 50/50, but do research beforehand as I've only heard of PG being used to dilute; I know for a fact that CBD isolate powder requires PG to dissolve but idk about menthol.

Menthol crystals will in 50/50. It's very potent going from raw form to pg, vg, or both so you don't need to worry about solubility really because of such a low amount. Nothing a little heat and a stir plate can't solve of you are having difficulty. But, you are going to get the menthol flavor so I recommend working with raw ws-23.

I'm not a huge fan of most coolants in general, however I have been enjoying using mint (spearmint, peppermint etc) flavors to add an icy bite. Or menthol crystals dissolved in PG.

Have you enjoyed any commercial frost or iced juices? Might be worth asking around for tips on which coolants are used in some commercial juices.

What % are you using in your recipes? I've seen many people satisfied with very small (under 1%) amounts of coolant in recipes. Could it be you're using too much proportionally to other ingredients?

One that I did enjoy was called something along the lines of "Ice" from Mt Baker Vapor. When I do use WS-23 I use only .50% to .75%

3-4% in every mix. No odd taste for me.

I am jealous of your non broken taste buds.

I'm not a fan of coolants either. Every one that I've tried makes my juice taste like it's spent a few months stored in a Chemical Warehouse.
I think it all depends on the individual. Just some like people are Pepper Tasters and others are Strawberry Mutes . . . some of us can taste coolant.

Definitely agree as much as I hate it. I love the effect, but there’s definitely a perceptible difference. I made Counter Punch as is and really loved it. I thought, “Hey, it’s a beverage, this could totally benefit from some icy goodness.” It changed the profile a lot. Somehow, for me, INW Cherries became much more medicinal in the presence of WS-23. I will say that in 007 Cola, it’s perfect. Maybe because the percentage isn’t high enough to pull it off profile?

Try menthol or mint. At higher levels I do get a kind of synthetic taste, but not as bad as you are describing it. You may have an irritation to the WS additive. I dont think koolada is going to be any better, but you can try and see.

I’ve tried a bunch of stuff including Polar Blast and Koolada. WS23 is still my go to.

I haven't been able to enjoy coolants either. I tried WS-23, and I don't exactly get a taste from it, it is more like an unpleasant numbing sensation on my taste buds - kind of hard to explain. It was nice for the first couple of puffs, but then it became overwhelming and I couldn't taste the other flavors in the recipe. I am hesitant to try other coolants after this experience.
