considering DIY ejuice (what to avoid)
submitted almost 5 years ago by repomanz

Hello,

Given I brew my own beer and roast my own coffee I figured I'd try my hand at ejuice. I watched through the informative video in the FAQ but there was one looming question on my mind that wasn't included. That is ..

What to watch out for and avoid? Specifically are there flavorings that have specific ingredients that I should avoid. Obvious vitamin e acetate for one, pepper extracts, likely diacyetl as another.

thoughts?

Diacetyl is delicious. I don't worry much about it myself.

There is a safety site you can use to check for flavors that we know have bad stuff in them.

It's not going to be 100% complete, but it is always being updated.

Oh yeah. Love some Daap. Makes everything taste better. Surely I inhaled more in my 22 years smoking than I ever will with vaping.

Vitamin E is conflated with vaping, in reality it was black market marijuana carts using it and NO ONE Else. Vitamin E oil and good hash oil can look very similar, so it makes a good cutting agent if you add a drop of flavors back in. No worry about that here, if you see a list of flavors in a recipe it's likely safe enough. Disinformation campaign from big tobacco is why they were ever associated at all.

This leads me to believe there is a story here. I will not ask and I will not share my own :)

We have a flavor safety page in the FAQ and sidebar. Diacetyl isn't a health concern in the levels found in flavors. I'm not sure what pepper extracts are.

missed that, will look through it. Pepper extracts (extreme example here. lol)

I'm sure that dudes lungs had a hard time with that. :)

Hi. That’s just stupid. What you want to stay avoid are flavors with fructose, corn syrup or oils. Check the safety list before you buy a flavor. Also avoid food colorings in flavors. Buy from reputable vendors found on the sidebar and you should be fine.

Agree any brain cells that guy had were probably taken at that time. Thanks for additional suggestions.

Right, but we don't vape actual vegetables and fruits...

Same here! Great stuff, very useful for beginners. Bought some of his one shots and it is very good.

I ended up getting a little crazier. I saw his best recipes of 2018 and he was raving about mayan milk a chocolate milk vape juice. I've made 120 ml but am about a week into a 2 week steep time. I also got the stuff for a blueberry yogurt flavor that's coming today.

I’m new to diy myself but in browsing all the flavors and ejuice recipes I’ve noticed any flavors with possible issues are tagged and explained well so just browse through the flavor list at your possible ones and see

If you are one of those that are super cautious, always try to look up the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). There is a cool Google Sheet that has links for SDS for various flavorings:

https://link.diyejuice.org/Facts000

/u/thatguydrinksbeer has made a great point. Cinnamons and strong (citrus) acids can crack plastic tanks... which is usually what most pod systems incorporate. If you're using atomizers that are steel and glass, no worries on cracking. That sheet above will also have warnings about the 'cracking' effect.

There is a company in Canada called www.driphackscanada.com and they sell the Drip Hacks Hack Shots. These are a 250ml bottle with the perfect amount of flavoring in it 50mls and all you do is fill the bottle with your VG and PG and shake and steep its that simple and will save you lots of time on mixing.

My best suggestion: buy a metric ton of syringes and various gauge blunt tip needles. Like way more than you ever thought you'd purchase in a lifetime. I NEVER have enough of either lol.

edit: and SFV every flavor you buy before you mix it. Oh, and cactus, buy cactus flavor. But i havent ran into any flavors to avoid specifically.

I have been mixing for a year and haven't used one syringe or blunt tip needle. No need with a scale.

I don’t trust my pouring skills. Scale is definitely required imo but I still use syringes for getting my ingredients together 🤷‍♂️

Buy glass dropper bottles then. Or plastic ones. Mixing with a syringe is a silly waste of time and money (I did it for 6 months before buying a scale).

I wouldn't trust my pouring skills either, but All of my flavorings come in dropper style bottles.
