Is it just my taste buds?
submitted almost 5 years ago by ybjlus

Hi all

With a lot of recipes I'm loving the flavour profile and description. Things like "a lemon tart with crumble and a sweet strawberry donut on the exhale"... When I'm reading it, I just cant't wait to make it! But then when I vape it, such a disappointment!

I also have this a lot with (premium) brands. Milkman, five pawns gambit etc. I've read the reviews and the whole world is going crazy about it. But when I vape it, I taste close to nothing of the described flavors.

I have to admit that fruit juices are a lot better! My adv is One hit wonder - Rocket man but even though I'm liking it I don't necessarily taste al the flavors in it. I'm using a aegis max with a sub ohm tank at 70ish watt.

So is it just my taste or do you guys have this also?

Hi. Something else factors into how we perceive taste. I had similar problems when I started vaping. My expectations were completely different from how the vapor tasted and I was very disappointed. We are used to tasting food - chewing, texture, sensation. Now all of these eJuice recipes sound like food when described ... pictures of luscious cakes, silky smooth ice creams, etc. That‘s what we want to taste, our expectation. But hot air/vapor will never fulfill that expectation. To really enjoy vaping, I think you have to let go of that expectation and practically give yourself time to discover a completely new way of tasting and believe me, it takes a while. One thing that helps fairly quickly is to not lick your eliquid before vaping it. Licking it, again, tastes nothing like the vapor. Give yourself time to adjust and stay hydrated, you‘ll get there.

You've got a point there. I hope it will change, I'm vaping on and off for a couple years now but bakery juices never tasted right some how. Is it possible that fruit juices behave differently then bakery ones? I really want to love the bakery ones because they sound so freaking good. The milkman example I gave, it tasted nothing like the description. But fruit ones I can taste just fine.

I think with the Milkman Juices, Churrios is the only one which tastes like it should.

I've read that fruit flavourings are a lot more volatile than the bakery ones. And some liquids sit in warehouses/shelves for months and months before you purchase them.

So while the bakery element might be perfect, the fruit has long gone by then.

I feel the same way. I feel like I only like 1-2% of juices I try or make. They all just sound so much better in my head than they end up tasting. I actually ended up with a Tribeca tobacco as my adv recently which is strange because in the 8+ years I've Vaped it's exclusively been fruit and dessert flavors. Its nice having a vape that's not in your face fruity and sweet sometimes.

Exactly! I've spend so much money on trying recipes and buying juices, it just hurts. They all sound so incredible but just a few are what I like. Fruit mixes are often pretty ok and I think I'll stay with that category for now.

I feel your pain. The only sweet juice I've really enjoyed in 8 years was Milk of the Poppy by bluedot vapor. But of course they've gone out of business, nobody has figured out an accurate clone, and I PM'd them begging for the recipe but still haven't heard back. Feelsbadman.

Isn't that a good amount of tpa dragon fruit as the main flavor?

Geekvape zeus sub ohm tank.

You should consider switching to a rebuildable.

I also have a zeus rebuildable and it's a bit of the same. It's not the tank, nor the taste. It's that I don't taste the flavors described, Milkman for example is just nasty but the flavour profile sounds great on paper.

If you ever find yourself needing a device to use when you’re out & about... grab a Uwell Caliburn. I bought and tried 20-30 other small devices and the Caliburn definitely had the best flavor / least hassle. I don’t think it would catch as much flavor as a rebuilable, but it’s really good for what it is. Just trying to save ya’ some wasted effort. Good luck!

I love my Caliburn too, but I recently upgraded to a Vaporesso Xros & it blows my Caliburns out of the water! It has an 800mah battery VS the Caliburn's 520mah battery & charges via USB-C (faster than USB); it has adjustable airflow, it has a clear strip on the juice pod so you can see what's left without pulling out the pod, it's flavor is insane & it's a completely worthy upgrade to the awesomeness that is the Caliburn. both are solid devices, but considering the prices are about the same, my vote goes to the Xros (I loved the first one that I gifted to my fiance so much that I bought 2 more, 1 for me & 1 extra as one of us always seems to have misplaced our device lol... speaking of which, that's another reason I vote Xros > Caliburn, it's just a tiny bit bigger/ heavier which means we don't misplace it as often as we misplaced the Caliburns.he prefers the Xros to the Caliburn as well & gave up on finding his missing Caliburn haha). Sorry I sound like an ad I'm just really glad I chose to try the Xros :)

Hey there, I see people recommending drippers, I wanted to offer an alternative solution (for RDA’s), the SMOK TFV8 Baby V2. It’s the best sub-ohm tank I’ve ever had (out of about 12), and I’m a flavour chaser (don’t care much for clouds though it does produce good clouds). I even prefer the taste of my TFV8 to any one of my RTA’s, though it is better with fruits than it is with desert flavours, which is my preference anyways.

Smok tfv8 big baby was my first tank, and it was shit. Idk if the coils are the same as the V2, but a Falcon or Freemax (mesh pro or fireluke) blows that thing out of the water. Same for the tfv12. Every tank I've had by smok sucked ass, even the ones with mesh coils

Tfv12 sucks ass, and I don’t care for the big baby, the tfv8 V2 is fucking awesome. Especially with the A2 coils (double mesh).

I have the same problem. I use to have a smok prince mesh coil tank. I switched to a freemax fireluke. Flavor greatly improved. And last month I tried an RTA. Ofrf I believe. Was half the flavor of the fireluke. So I got a free max mesh pro. Slight bit better taste than the fireluke. I buy premium juice here and there. Mostly I use my diy cause it’s insanely cheaper. BUT to me the diy just doesn’t taste as good as premium.

Many factors go into the flavor you get from an ejuice. The tank n coils your using greatly vary in flavor received. Whether your still smoking or recently quit because smoking dulls your senses. Going from commercial to diy recently because commercial juices are loaded with sweetener which enhances taste on your tongue and not just your olfactory senses. If you limit sweetener in your diy you will adjust and commercial will taste disgustingly sweet imo.

Buy a better tank or rebuildable rta/rda and flavor will improve. Also mix highly rated recipes than alter them to taste better for you, whether that's higher flavor percentages or more sweetener.

Being an older guy, yeah, can say my taste-buds are not nearly as astute as they once were. Commercial vjuices were "in-your-face" flavorful and overly sweet. It was not uncommon that I had to dilute it down with VG... sometimes a 5:2 ratio and in one rare case a 3:2 ratio.

And jumping into DIY, was not able to taste it very well at the suggested percentages. I'm in between MTL and DL styles. Very much a restrictive lung type hit. And sometimes I don't get the flavor I'd really like. Lot of that is trying to ADV something for three or four days minimum (a degree of vapor's tongue sets in then). Switching to a different flavor profile AND/OR laying off the vape for a day or so will let me taste things MUCH better. But then I also have to avoid eating hot salsa or super-sour candy like Sour Patch Kids.

The great thing about DIY is that YOU get to control the strength (amount) of flavoring you use. If there are off-notes when pushing certain concentrates too high, you may not pick them up. Or you may notice something strong like a floral presence. DIY requires a lot of patience. Hang in there and you'll figure out some things.

Do I have a dozen awesome recipes? Nope. I have two "swell" ones of my own, about half a dozen decently good and a couple of solo flavorings like TFA's RY4 Double and PUR Caramel Coffee w/Sweet Milk. Though I'm lazy, still experimenting once in a while. My lastest and most favorite (for now) was a off-the-top-of-my head combo from about a month ago that I slapped together. And it worked. That success was from doing single-flavor testing [SFT]. Because no matter how much you read flavor reviews (here or on vendor's sites), you still have to find that sweet spot that does it for you.

Yeah the only flavor profiles to me are 1 fruit 2 not fruit

Think about it like wine tasting. Lots of explication and gobbly gook, but more often than not it tastes one way or another to most people.

Also, some folks just don't taste certain things. I can't stand commercial creams and custards (because of DAP free flavors), and barely get notes of them in DIY. That note changes the flavor, yes, but it's not a substitute. I can't taste normal strawberries.

I've focused my DIY recipes to reflect my taste buds. Simple recipes. Custard and fruit. One-note fruit with supporting flavors to back it up. Shit like that. DIY is good for that as you can tweak things to best suit you.

Funny that you mention wine, I'm a sommelier and wine is a passion of mine. And indeed if we say I taste peach, it's not actually peach.

Like I said before it's not that I don't taste it, it doesn't even come close to the described flavours sometimes. Some liquids are just really really disgusting, while the reviews and flavour profiles are outstanding. And I have this with most bakery flavours, I really want to like them but no luck so far.

I get ya on the bakery flavors. Commercial custards and creams were always terrible for me. But DIY is different. Have you tried DIY bakeries? Using different flavors and such?

Also, for recipes, check the year they were put out. 3-4 year old recipes used different techniques and percentages that don't fly well with current atomizers.

For example: https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/10644

This recipe doesn't work nowadays. CAP Sugar Cookie is way too high.

That's a good one, didn't try out bakery for a while now. And most of the recipes I try are quite old. Didn't realize that atomizers changed a lot since then.

I'll give it another go, maybe some fruit-custard recipes will work. Thnx!
