Smoked Hazelnut Custard
submitted almost 5 years ago by npa6600

Hey Guys,

I'm really new to DIY, so I've still got a lot to learn.

I just had an idea for a smoked custard style recipe, but because it's going to require a long steep I wanted to check with some of you more experienced people here if you can see any glaring issues with this before I mix it up.

I'm most concerned about the percentages of Hazelnut, Vanilla Bourbon and Graham Cracker. I want the hazelnut upfront with the RY4 but the Graham Cracker to be part of the custard base note.

I've seen a lot of these types of recipes tend to use acetyl pyrazine 5%, but since i don't have any. I used 1% hazelnut to compensate for this. I don't know if this will cause off notes.

|BRAND|FLAVOUR|%| |:-|:-|:-| |CAP|Butter Cream|1%| |FA|Butterscotch|1%| |CAP|Graham Cracker|1%| |FA|Hazelnut|1%| |TPA|RY4 Double|6%| |FA|Vanilla Bourbon|1.5%| |CAP|Vanilla Custard|4%|

I figure because of the custards and creams it's going to take at least a month of steeping before it's ready to vape so I plan to mix around 100 ml of this to make it worth the wait. I didn't want to mix this up and end up waiting a month for something horrible.

Any and all criticism is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I mixed up 30ml of this as above just to see how it goes. Will be back in a month after it steeps.

Look into FLV Smoked Butterscotch . . . it's much easier to use than FA Black Fire. Also, FLV Sweet & Smokey Tobacco.

Where is the smoked aspect coming from?

The RY4 Double.

You ever tried FA Black Fire? Your recipe isn't my kinda thing but if you want to boost the flame roasted notes, that in tiny amounts is mighty powerful.

Not heard of it at all. I'll look into it. I have some charlie tobacco on the way, do you think that would serve a similar purpose?

RY4 Double will not give any smoked aspects. It's an earthy vanilla Caramel tobacco.

Yes I am aware of this. I think a lot of people have got a the wrong end of the stick with the name. I wasn't implying smoked as in wood fire.

It was just a play on words because it's a tobacco custard. You smoke tobacco, and it's in custard.

If by "smoked" you mean cigarette ash type of smoke INW dnb (dirty neutral Base) is your Best friend. If youre looking for a different type of smokiness ignore this comment

Can I ask why are you trying to create a recipe when you have very little mixing experience? It is really a good idea to stick to mixing other people's recipes until you become familiar with the flavors that you're using. Before you start combining flavors together you should really single flavor test (SFT) them so you know how they taste to you. Flavor names can be seriously misleading and you cannot just go by them alone when trying to create a recipe.

I've read the sidebar, and know it's recommended to follow other highly rated recipes at first. Then move on to simple flavour pairings, before tackling more complex. I figure this has to do with learning how to use your equipment and learning common flavour profiles.

I've already mixed about 15 little 10ml bottles. I've also researched the type of flavour I want to make extensively by comparing about 20 different recipes on ELR which use a very similar profile.

A lot of those pairings are used in similar recipes by other people, I assume it's not too much of a stretch to sub in some similar profiles and add flavourings you think will work.

Besides, I don't mind making some mistakes along the way. I'm not going to let that put me off. I once got through 250ml of a lemon pledge cheesecake which I purchased from a cheap vendor. So I am willing to vape just about anything... besides Vampire Vapes Heisenberg.

I get that making 100ml of this at once is somewhat idiotic (I'm not going to try and defend that) but if I'm going to have to wait 3-4 weeks before I vape it, I figure I might as well wait for a decent amount of it.

Do you have any recommendations on how I could make this better? Or if I need to make any changes to the recipe?

How do you know what flavors you think will work if you don't know what they taste like? I've read flavor reviews and read comments and recipes and purchased flavors based on that before and some times have been severely disappointed. Not everyone's palate aligns and you really need to try flavors for yourself. I don't know how much assistance I can be with this recipe. I don't have any experience with RY4. I personally wouldn't use FA Hazelnut because FW is so good I have no desire to try FA. I probably wouldn't use Cap Vanilla Custard. For me, at higher percentages it has chemically, oily off-notes. I only use that flavor at lower percentages, mainly for it's thickening properties. For a custard flavor, I prefer using WF Vanilla Custard, TFA Vanilla Custard II, FLV Vanilla Pudding, INW Custard, and of course FA Custard Premium.

Edit: also Cap Graham Cracker has cinnamon, don't know how well that will fit in.

Okay. So this is the kind of help I was looking for. ~~I've subbed out the Graham Cracker due to cinnamon.~~ I think the cinnamon could work with the RY4.

What do you consider a high percentage of CAP Vanilla Custard?

I don't have any other custards on hand at the moment, however I've added, INW Custard Molinberry Legendary Custard, and FA Custard Premium to my list of things to get.
