How to dilute my base?
submitted almost 5 years ago by DrunkenVapour

I have 900ml of 90/10 VG/PG base, and I would like to dilute it down to somewhere near 70/30 VG/PG to carry some more flavor. Math is not my strong side, but i was thinking maybe I need to get 100ml of straight PG and top it up like that - but I can’t tell what mix I’d end up with if I do that and could use some help!

Edit: forgot to add that there’s only room for 100ml to dilute with since it’s in a 1 liter bottle.

900mL of 90/10 is 90mL of PG and 810 mL of VG.

Getting it down to 70/30 without changing the volume of VG would mean that 810mL would constitute 70%, so the total volume would be 810 / 0.7 = 1157 mL

So you’d need to add 1157mL - 810mL - 90mL = 257mL of pure PG.

Edit: fixed my Ps and Gs.

Here’s how to do it properly.

If we look at the limit case of topping off with pure PG you’ll see that your proportion falls a bit short:

810mL VG and 90mL + 100mL PG gives you 81/19 VG/PG.

So working ‘backwards’ you can look at the change per mL if you were to substitute a mL (or 10) of the base with pure PG.

810 / 90 + 100 = 81/19

801 / 89 + 110 = 80.1/19.9

...

720 / 80 + 200 = 72/28

The ‘pattern’ is just a formula and you can constrain it because your total volume can’t be above 1000mL and I assume you want to maximize your volume.

What you end up with is needing to transfer out 122.22mL of your base and add 222.22mL of pure PG to get 70/30 pretty much on the nose. 120mL gets you close enough and that can fit perfectly in another bottle.

Dang! I’m reliving some serious math class trauma here. Even formulas don’t compute. Thank you for clearing up what I exactly need to take out of my base to make it work though! I hope it wasn’t too much trouble!!

~~If you need to clear out some VG for the PG it’s even more straightforward.~~

~~You just need to transfer out 200mL of VG and top the bottle off with 300mL of PG. 70/30. Done.~~

Need to re-do the math.

Stand by.

Sorry for being literal, but the VG is already mixed with the PG, so do you mean just taking out 300ml of the 900ml 90/10 VG/PG mix?

According to LiqCalc, 250ml of straight PG added to 900ml 90/10 VG/PG base would yield 1150ml of 70.43/29.57 VG/PG.

EDIT: Units

> to carry some more flavor

If you're adding flavor to that base it will dilute it. Almost all flavors are carried in PG.

Does you base contain nicotine or just VG/PG?

I’m not yet mixing my own aromas, so I buy these premixed 30ml shots which are good for a 120ml finished mix and then just add the base, which btw has 3mg of nicotine. But I had thought the same about the aromas, that they were simply just PG, but I’ve had one aroma from Jam Monster and one by Candy King, which both contain VG and PG. On the Candy King one it even says that the suggested base to be added should be 70/30 VG/PG. and After mixing it with my very VG-heavy base, it just doesn’t have the same flavor as an actual premade eliquid from the store.

Just FYI those are typically referred to as Oneshots. Most of the Oneshots I'm aware of are entirely made up aroma/flavoring but it kind of makes sense that companies like Jam Monster and Candy King would add PG/VG to round up the % and/or simplify the math. But just so you know, the typical oneshot is just flavors. For those your results would look like this

As you can see, just adding flavor dilutes your nicotine content and VG/PG ratio. Pre-diluting it and then adding flavor would put you well below your target and cut your nicotine level nearly in half.

Oneshots, thanks! Heard that term before, but it makes sense that thats what they’re named.

I really like the brands I mentioned, as they have a wide range of aromas that aren’t with methol/mint, which always had me coughing like crazy, so it is a bit frustrating that they don’t state how the ratio is on their aromas. Haven’t tried too many other brands, but I should maybe look around. I just always seem to think that my finished eliquids have nowhere near the same flavorful punch as the pre made, right-off-the-shelf premixes.

Hell, I oughta just dive into making my own ejuicea from scratch, have been lurking around here for quite a while!

You didnt say what the flavor were but those one shots may just need to steep they may not be shake n vape

They’ll definitely have to sit there for a bit, and I may have slightly jumped the gun here. I just always struggle with knowing what my base should be in order to get a ~70/30 type mix. Buying the 30ml bottles of aromas/shots and making 120ml liquid is just easy enough on my absolutely horrendously problem solving capabilities.
