How to tell if flavours are expired?
submitted almost 5 years ago by LookAtMeImAName

I initially got into DIY Ejuicing about 2 years ago to save money. I spend well over a thousand dollars buying all of the flavours, bottles and equipment to continue this hobby, and then I moved. When I moved all my DIY stuff was packed in my basement and I never got around to unpacking it all... Skip ahead to today (two years later) and I've finally gotten back into it.

My question is, how many of my flavours can I expect to continue to use today? I really don't want to have to throw them all away. For reference, I know I bought the oldest ones in FEB 2019, so I am going by that date for aLL of my flavours, and there are a lot... At least 100 bottles, all 30ml up to 250ml.

From what I've researched, all flavours are different, but I haven't noticed anything in any of the flavours that gives me the impression that they have gone bad (no gunk/bad smell). They were all stored at around 17 celsius (62.5 F).

Will I have to replace my entire stock?

They're fine.

You sure? I mean this is exactly what I wanted to hear so I want to be careful I’m being objective here lol

Yes. I'm using flavors older than your oldest right now and they're perfectly fine. They don't go bad but they degrade so won't be as potent. 18 months though any losses would be so negligible you won't notice if they were stored somewhat appropriately which you claim to have done.

Yea they were basically buried 15 feet underground for 2 years straight for all they know. Thanks

Nope, they are fine. They are PG based, which is bacteriostatic anyway, so nothing bad can grow in them. Some flavours may turn bad after a LONG time, in terms of losing their original taste, but certainly not in a few years. Especially if stored away from sunlight in a basement with only 17 degree celsius.

As long as they're not exposed to excessive heat or direct sunlight, flavors don't generally go bad with age. There might be a few exceptions, but a year and a half is nothing to worry about (especially since it sounds like you kept them reasonably cool and dark.)

I have a 30 mg bottle that was made November 2013 and indicates an expiration of November 2016. The vape shop I bought it from said it's fine.

That's a little excessive. I would tell them that's absolutely not fine unless it was 95% off. Almost 7 years old it has most certainly lost potency at the least.

I have a liquid from that same time frame and it's still fine. Tastes just as it always has.

If a flavor goes bad, you should be able to smell that something isn't right. I got a bunch of flavors from a mixer that has been around for a while and was significantly reducing the size of his stash. I believe that he said some of the flavors were 4-5 years old. Most of them were fine, but two of them had gone bad. One smelled like fermented yeast and the other smelled like weed.

Just cuz I know what weed smells like has nothing to do with what my goals might, or might not be.

Sound fine to me. In a cool environment I’d expect it lasting at least 5 years. Mixed juice about 2 years. make a few test batches

Some might have gone bad, but most should be fine. I quite often buy flavorings that are close to expired because they're dist cheap, like 10% of the original price, in all honesty maybe 2 or 3 of mine have gone bad and I have around 200 bottles here so ya know, the only way I could tell was it turned brown ish and tasted bitter, it was a grape flavor so def not supposed to be just bitter.

I haven't had anything go bad, over a few years I noticed TFA Pistachio drop potency a lot, but I only realised when I cracked a fresh one. If that was my collection I'd use as if it were good and just be on the look out for anything that seems like... why does this pistachio ry4 juice not taste like pistachio, etc.

Some are definitely bad. Especially if they're in the squishy polyethylene bottles.

You have to try them to know. I had about 1/2 my stock go bad in similar situation. Some were useable, some only slightly degraded in taste and some were totally stale and gross.
