First attempt at DIY. PG taste and smells like vegatables.
submitted about 5 years ago by Twrecks_

Just bought my first haul into trying to diy. I got a 1000ml of 48mg PG nic salt and a 1000ml of 48mg VG nic salt from Nic River. I mixed up a 30 ml bottle to test it out with some TFA cream soda at 50/50 but it taste horrible. I finally figured out that the taste and smell are coming from the PG. Did I get a bad batch or am I doing something totally wrong. Any guidance on this would be super helpful. Thanks.

PG shouldn't have any taste or smell really. Probably a bad batch. Did you try a flavorless mix with no nic to ensure it is the PG?

It's not the PG that has a funky taste, it's the nic salt. PG just carries flavors (including undesirable ones) better than VG does.

Why are u mixing 2 bases, shouldnt u have 1 base of 48mg nic salts and then be mixing that w pg and vg? 48 plus 48 mg of nic sounds like a large amount. I only mix freebase so maybe im missing something...

Lol I'm new to this and figured I'd mix it at 50/50. At 50/50 I'd still be at 48mg nic, which is what I was wanting out of my pod juice. I could have been totally wrong going this route though.

50/50 only refers to vg/pg total content. It sounds like you're mixing nicotine (that is suspended within pg and vg) directly with one another and, maybe I'm wrong, but that's not how this works. The nic is a small part of a recipe, you should be using plain vg and pg and flavors for most of your mix. Edit: in short I agree with etherwave80

It doesn’t sound like he’s mixing his nic. But if he is he’s taking unnecessary extra steps.

Unless you're vaping unflavored, you're ratio is going to be higher on the PG side, and your nic will be lower.

But, this is a viable way to get your ratio higher on the VG side and not have to work with full VG nic.

I just asked myself that too.

If your target mix is 48mg then you don't use a 48mg nicotine to achieve it. Your nicotine would take up the entire recipe. Most people use 250mg/ml salt nic in either pg OR vg. This way the nic takes up very little of the recipe leaving room for flavoring, pg, and vg to fill out the rest.

Also tfa cream soda is hardly used in any recipes and probably for a great reason. Try researching flavors and their recommended percentages before blindly purchasing them.

Try going like 85/15 VGPG and see if its any better. Also is the PG clear?

It's clear. I use it in smaller pod systems, so I'm worried being mixed at 85/15 would be really thick.

Yeah don't do that in pod systems.

is it the pg based nicotine or just the pg?

It's 48mg nic salt PG. I got it and a bottle of 100% 48mg VG then mix to about a 50/50 ratio for pod systems

So.. you're basically mixing pg nic and vg nic, adding flavor and nothing else? If that's the case, that's the reason it tastes horrible

That's exactly what I'm doing. Sorry for being a noob and asking all this without reading the FAQ page. I thought I might've just got a bad batch, but clearly I'm just not doing it right. I appreciate the guidance and help.

What the hell? Why?

They're ending up with a mix that has pg, vg, nic, and flavour. That's ejuice. Regardless of the relative proportions of the two nic bases, when they add flavour they're going to end up with some juice at some strength less than 48mg.

It's an unusual way to do it, but there is no reason that the end result should taste horrible unless they are using a horrible blend/amount of flavour or one or more component ingredient is defective.

How is this comment upvoted?

yea dude you need pure VG, you're mixing nicotine and nicotine at this point so your nicotine level is probably very high also.

if you want 50mg juice, use 100mg VG based nicotine and mix it with pure PG, pure VG, and flavors.

if you want 3mg use 100mg PG based nicotine and mix it with pure PG, pure VG and flavors.

what mg strength are you aiming for first off?

edit: it sounds like there's no math involved here. you need to measure everything precisely.

Buddy, maths is hard. No matter how he mixes his 2 nic's together, it will never be higher than 48 mg/ml.

Other than that, I agree with your other comments.

Hi. If you want to vape a 48mg/ml eliquid, you‘d ideally get 1000ml of 250mg/ml. The reason is that nicotine has a chemical taste. By using a high nicotine base and diluting it, it will taste less chemical than by using only nicotine base. I assume you are using a pod or why are you mixing 50/50 VG/PG? How much is “some„ TFA Cream Soda? You should be mixing by weight using a scale that measures 0.01g.

What really angers me is that all of the info you would have needed can easily be found here by reading the FAQ/sidebar. You can’t just buy stuff and somehow throw it together and ask for help when it’s shit. Ask first, read the info, join the Discord.

This is why I know I could not do diy, but love seeing all yours amazing creations! Fomentlife should be able to help, if you can tag them!

This isn’t a typical experience. I bet you could DIY just fine.

Due to space, having young boys (one whom would mess with stuff, as he fears nothing or no one), and not having time it’s just not something I can even try at this time. But eventually may look into it. :)

I figured that I might as well try. For less that $100 I got a ton of stuff. Even if the PG is bad and I have to get more it's still a lot less than having to buy it in the store.

See my comment above about nicotine purity. However, River Supply nicotine seems to be high-quality.
