Shortcuts to Mixing your Own Profiles
submitted about 5 years ago by mixman0gDelightfully Mediocre

I am not a prolific recipe maker, I just spend some time mixing other's recipes. I have worked on profiles and often end up at a dead end -- not what I'm looking for.

Here are some shortcuts that can help you in making your own profiles:

  • Always Single Flavor Test (SFT) new flavors as they arrive. Don't put it off, just go ahead and make a simple, single flavor recipe. Trying to hit a profile target became much easier after I started to SFT.
  • To get an approximation of the % to start at for SFT, use the Flavor Notes in the sidebar, AllTheFlavors.com Average % mixed, E-liquid-recipes.com "Single flavor recommendations" and/or ask on the discord in #flavor-talk or #new-mixers.
  • Keep Notes. This is so important. As your flavor stash grows and time passes, you're less likely to recall any nuances from your testing.
  • Be patient. Everyone wants to dive in, make 500ml, and it rarely works out for the best. Try letting fresh mixes, even SFT, steep at least a 2-3 days. For custards, creams, and tobacco flavors wait at least 5-7 days before you start testing.

I would add to this a tip I got from someone else,

Mix a bottle (I use my big 120ml)bottles and just do 72/28 (my usual is 70/30)@my usual nic level.

This bottle fills my 10ml testers, 5 drops in 10ml is a 1%mix, from my sft comes an idea for a larger mix and that's how I get an idea...

Thank you. I bought a fuckton of high quality flavors for super low cheap and it is really intimidating to even begin. I would not have even considered it were it not for this community.

Start small! It's so much easier to diagnose/adjust a 1-2 flavor recipe than to try and figure out what went wrong with a 6-flavor combination that sounded good.

I don't know if this is helpful to you but I've been single flavour testing a flavour a day and writing some notes down. I had loads of flavours that i hadn't tested yet and it was really daunting. It's much more manageable to break it down and just worry about what you have to test that day. It's really helped my mixing and I've learnt a lot, plus it's actually pretty fun. Having the routine and daily goal has helped me stick to it too.
