PART 1

Noted Ep. 168: CONES (ft Eyemsam)

(Episode Aired 15th September 2020)

(Ranked from worst to first)

WF Sugar Cone: The only flavour this week ID10-T and Emily found unpleasant as a SF. Both got a chemical plastic off note. But it can be very successful when used in recipes. ID10-T found there is a dark, crunchy sugar cone but also a fairly prominent, artificial plastic-y off note and an out of place maple. But he was the only one to get any maple. He is sensitive to that plastic-y flavour. Sam liked it as a SF, didn't get any plastic. He would have ranked it as third of the five he tried. Preferred to OOO. Got slight cardboard note from OOO. Sam and Emily thought it was like a kids ice cream cone, like a generic box of cones from a grocery store. Both thought it has a bright sweetness. Cheeba got a slight plastic, but not that strong. All agreed it's little bit dry that lends itself to the texture of a cone. Has a good crunchiness. ID10-T and Emily tested at 2%. Emily has let it steep for a month in the past and still got plastic off note. Cheeba and Sam tested at 3%.

6.12

FW Waffle Cone: ID10-T and Emily thought it was a good waffle, but a bad waffle cone. Has a buttery maple that is out of place for a waffle cone. The butteriness really pushes it towards being a waffle. Cones aren't buttery. The maple note is really good though. A fairly light maple, not heavy or artificial. Not as crisp as a cone, a bit too soft in texture. It's dry enough, but lacks crunch. It's better than a lot of waffle flavours, many of which can be a bit gross. Has the cooked edges, like it's just come out of the waffle iron. If you want a waffle cone for an ice cream recipe FW Waffle Cone may not work, unless the maple wouldn't be out of place. May work in something like a maple ice cream recipe. Would work well in a waffle with butter and maple syrup recipe.

10.22

OOO Caramel Cone: Pretty tasty. Almost like a one shot. Has the ice cream as well as the caramel and cone. Doesn't have the full thickness and richness you'd probably want from an ice cream. But does have a creamy vanilla. Good amount of carmel sauce for an ice cream topping. A very good caramel. Very bright. Has a little bit of crunchy cone, but could do with more. Might be better at a higher %? Nothing offensive or off. Cheeba and Sam thought the creamy vanilla played more into the caramel rather than explicitly reading as ice cream. The creaminess definitely lends itself to whatever ice cream you'd want to add to it. Just needs some ice cream and a little more crispy cone for a good carmel ice cream cone recipe. Really solid base to work off. Tested at 3% and 4% which may have been a bit low. Would be interesting to try 8% to see if there are off notes or if it's just really great.

14.09

WF Crispy Wafer SC: Not exactly a cone. But tastes like a cheap wafer style cone, like the flat bottom ones from Dairy Queen. Or the wafer part of wafer biscuits. Has some fairly light but nice vanilla. Crispy, sweet. It's very different between 1% and 2%. ID10-T found it 1% tastes pretty accurate to a cheap wafer cone. At 2% it's very different. It gets a bit buttery, almost a cheesiness, more dense and cookie-like. Has a little bit of a nutty, darker, almost chocolate-y note. The main difference is the buttery-ness. Doesn't taste bad at 2%, it's just not an ice cream cone. ID1-0-T used it as the wafer in a Kit-Kat. Sam tested it at 3% and he and Cheeba didn't get any butteriness. 1-1.5% would be just right for a wafer cone if using with a lighter flavoured ice cream like vanilla. Might be overpowered by a bold chocolate-y or fruity ice cream. Seems like it could get overpowered in a mix pretty easily. Wafers don't have a lot of flavour to them. Use at 1.5% or below for an ice cream cone. Changes at 2%. But Sam tested it at 3% and he and Cheeba didn't get any butteriness.

17.52

OOO Sugar Cone: A delicate flavour so can only use it in a recipe with lighter flavoured ice creams, like vanilla. It's easily over powered in a mix. Sweet, has a nice dry-ness, crispy texture. A bit top heavy, the flavour comes in mostly up front then finishes pretty soft. May want to fill it in or crisp it up more. Pretty much nails the Drumstick type sugar cone. Get the bakery with a little brown sugar sweetness up front, a little touch of vanilla. Needs more depth and more crunch and maybe a little more of a toasted note. Mixing it with a little WF Crispy Wafer, less than 1%, may turn Crispy Wafer from a wafer cone to a sugar cone. OOO is a more top heavy where as WF is more base-y, so they would probably compliment each other well. 2-3% OOO and 0.5-0.75% WF would probably be the perfect sugar cone. Sam tested it at 3%, got a cardboard note on the exhale. But would still use it in mixes, could easily cover the cardboard. May have been because it's lighter in flavour and finishes so soft it read as cardboard? Tested at 3%. Very light, even at 3%

PART 2

Noted Ep. 168: CONES (ft Eyemsam)

Recipes:

Rin's Ice Cream Cone by mixinvixens (ATF) Recipe on ATF uses TFA Caramel, which is awful. She may have meant to put TFA Caramel Original or TFA Caramel Candy? Emily thinks she meant to use TFA Caramel, but at a lower % of 1%. Rin uses low %s as she's a super taster so ID10-T doubled the %s. Don't just double the %s! 2% TFA Caramel is not good. The peanut and the ice cream elements were really nice. But didn't get any caramel or cone. Instead got a weird smokey flavour with a waxy, plastic-y finish. Maybe just double LB Vanilla Ice Cream and WF Honey Roasted Peanuts SC. Even though Rin uses really low %s ID10-T, Sam and Emily have usually got plenty of flavour from mixing them as written.

25.26

Taco Tuesday by RedWagonVapes (ATF) There are several versions on ATF. This is the most recent one, says it's V3 in the description. An apple cheesecake taco. ID10-T got a prominent artificial, plastic-y maple off note from WF Sugar Cone. It ruined an otherwise good apple cinnamon cheesecake. Would be a great recipe is the WF Sugar Cone was replaced with maybe OOO Sugar Cone and a little WF Crispy Wafer. The OOO would be easily overpowered by the bolder apple and cinnamon if used alone. FLV Apple Filling is a bully, but even at 1% doesn't over power this mix. Uses 4% INW Yes We Cheesecake and 3% CAP NY Cheesecake which stands up to it.

30.07

Cornish Cornet by Statch (ATF) Used 2% WF Crispy Wafer and 1% WF Sugar Cone. WF Sugar Cone didn't ruin this mix, no plastic off note. Emily really liked this mix. ID10-T doesn't usually like MB Legendary Custard all that much. Gets a spice note from it. Used at 4% in this mix and he didn't get any spice note, covered by the vanilla. There's a really, really rich vanilla ice cream. ID10-T got a bit of maple from WF Sugar Cone, but no plastic off note. Wasn't turned off by the maple. The maltiness of the FW Hazelnut (used at 1%) is really helping out the cone. Says in the description that this recipe allows you to add your favourite toppings, like strawberry or mint choc chip etc. But Emily doesn't think that would work because there's already a lot going on in the recipe. But as it is it's a very tasty recipe. Might be able to sub the MB Legendary Custard for TFA Vanilla Custard II at 2-3%.

33.21

Vanilla Waffle Cone by soulchkn (ATF) Uses 1% FW Hazelnut, 1.5% WF Crispy Wafer and 1.5% FW Waffle Cone for the cone layer. Really tasty, but not very accurate. Supposed to be a waffle cone with vanilla soft serve ice cream. The FW Waffle Cone makes it maple ice cream rather than vanilla. It also reads as a waffle, not a waffle cone. But it is rich, creamy, has a little nuttiness and a darker, crispy cone type note on the end. The Hazelnut plays really well with the Waffle Cone.

37.00

For Funsies by EyeMSam (ATF) Sam was going for a choc chip cookie dough ice cream cone with a little caramel on top. ID10-T thought if you replaced the FLV Cookie Dough with OOO Cookie Dough it would be more accurate. But as it is it tastes a lot like a cookie dough ice cream cone with caramel. There's no choc chips, which cookie dough usually has. OOO Cookie Dough is really accurate to choc chip cookie dough so would be a better option for this mix. Sam wanted to accentuate the cone aspect, so didn't want to push CAP VBIC too high. Plus there's already some creamy vanilla in the OOO Caramel Cone. OOO Carmel Cone is not easily subbed as there is so much going on in it. Would need about 4 flavours to get what the one flavour has.

39.34

MlNikon's Drumstick by mixinvixens (ATF) ID10-T's favorite recipe he tried this week. Barely any cone. Emily says now she would add a little WF Crispy Wafer to bump the cone up. On Mixin' Vixens show ID10-T suggested that she use SA Waffle. But says at that time he hadn't tried OOO Sugar Cone. SA Waffle is a waffle cone, not a sugar cone so wouldn't have worked in this mix. Also the griddle note it has is a little it earthy and weird. Earthy enough that Concrete called it a slightly dirty waffle cone. Could make a waffle cone RY4 mix or tobacco? Otherwise SA Waffle is crispy, dry, sweet. Has the toasted meringue and vanilla note that is just right for a waffle cone, but wrong for an actual waffle. The earthiness may not be as easy to cover as OOO Sugar Cone is to reinforce. Sam didn't get any of the cardboard note he got from OOO Sugar Cone as a SF in this mix. But didn't get a lot of cone overall, got more of an ice cream drizzled in a really good caramel.

43.52

BRDZ Peach & Apricot by BRDZ (ATF) Uses 1% FLV Persimmon, which is a difficult flavour. Has spice notes. Emily doesn't like it, finds it thin, harsh and a bit boozy. Found it ruined what would proably otherwise be a good recipe. Got a bit of cone on the finish, but the Persimmon was hiding it.

48.27

Drumsticks #mixinvixens by corvape (ATF) WF Honey Roasted Peanuts is a tricky flavour. It's really good, but can be really over powering in a mix. 0.75% is almost too much, unless you're going to steep it for several weeks. It's distracting in this mix. Emily might have used Honey Roasted Peanuts at around 0.25%. Or FLV Beer Nuts could be really great. It's another very potent flavour so would use it at a max of 0.5%, probably 0.25% would be enough. Especially as the nuts on a Drumstick are not a main note anyway. Or WF Caramel Popcorn and Peanuts could be interesting. FA Cookie is giving a crunchy, grainy texture.

51.26

The Green Man by Vapethoven (ATF) Mint choc chip ice cream cone. Recipe is really, really good. Uses FLV Creme De Menthe, which is perfect for min choc chip. Only uses it at 0.85% so it is a more mellow mint. Backs up the chocolate note with VT Choc Custard and WF Puff Cereal (Cocoa) SC. So the emphasis is on the choc chips. Uses 2.5% WF Sugar Cone, which is high. But Emily didn't get any plastic off note. Also uses 1% FW Waffle Cone. Emily didn't get much maple, just a darker sweetness.

55.22

Mister Softee by Deejay_Mills (ATF) Emily's favorite of the recipes she tried this week. Really accurate. It's a soft serve ice cream cone with sprinkles. It's lighter and brighter, like a soft serve vanilla ice cream is. It's not as dark or rich as Statch's Cornish Cornet recipe. He uses 2.75% OOO Sugar Cone and 0.5% JF Biscuit, which is lighter than INW Biscuit. So it keeps the lightness of a sugar cone whilst backing it up in the mix. Flawlessly executed recipe.

I've not had any cone or similar flavour in my arsenal yet (but commenting for a chance to win give away if that's still happening :))

It's the FOTW thread that does the giveaway. That's where you need to comment. It should have gone up around Tuesday-Wednesday-it's blue raspberry this week.
