My first mishap and subesequent first full-sized bottle
submitted about 5 years ago by waylaid_wanderer

Just got into mixing a few weeks ago but ive been thinking about it and following this sub for a while now. Probably like most newbies, pmta was the kick in the pants I needed. So far, I've mixed up a handful of recipes and sft, taken notes, etc. and feel like I'm starting to get a handle on this.

Then I had my first mishap tonight. I was mixing up 3 new recipes - 2 I found on ELR, one I adapted from reading a handful of others. I'm trying for a fried cookie thing. All was going well until I opened up my brand new bottle of zeppola that just got to my doorstep this afternoon, turned it to start dripping .2 g into my 10 ml tester when it poured out all over my scale and into the bottle. The tip got missed on the assembly line and I just upended the bottle everydamnwhere. After clean up, I figured I ended up with about 1.1g in my 10 mL bottle. 11%. What. The. F***. Figuring there was no way to fix it, I just moved ahead knowing it would suck. But then after a while, I realized I could "fix " it by making a bigger bottle. I played with the math a little and figured i could come close to the desired 2% by making a batch of 55 mL. So I adjusted my recipe to make another 45 mL minus the zeppola and poured the over-zeppola-ed tester in. Gave it a good shake and on the first taste its not too bad. Now I've put it away for 2-3 weeks and will see how it turns out then. And thats how I accidentally made my very first full-size bottle of e-juice.

Oh Gosh I can't imagine how mad you were. But hey it sounds like you have a real diy Hit by accident. Way to go....:-)

Ha! Mad was luckily only a short phase between stunned disbelief and resignation of a failed experiment before I figured i could upscale it. I will tell you this, though: I'll definitley be inspecting new bottles from here on out! Here's hoping that it turns out tasty!

Well I just gave it a try after a 5 day steep and it's very not bad! The fried bit is light and vanilla comes through nicely. I'll give it another week or so and see if the cookie comes through a little more. This is fun!

I love Zeppola.

Next up, try WF glazed doughnut and WF deep fried pastry dough.

Chubby gorilla bottles are the main culprit of this for me, several times the spout insert has popped off whilst refilling an atty only to get juice everywhere.

Personally the first time I use a flavour if I haven’t SFT’ed it I squeeze a drop onto my finger to taste, it’s not as good as a SFT, but at least your more likely to notice the spout is missing before dumping it all in!

The drop on the finger kinda works. :) Combined with just the aroma of it, you can get a fair idea of how it'll taste. Might not pick up too many off-notes this way; unless they're just rotten harsh.

My nose lies to me about the sweetness of certain flavorings. :/

Most likely, the tip is stuck in the cap...I've had that happen to me a few times. Usually screwing the cap on very tightly, then unscrewing it again, will fix the issue.

Not sure how that happens. Are you saying the tip initially was secured on the bottle while you were measuring? Then it just popped off?
Do you mind sharing with us where you got it?
congratulations anyway on a sort of successful mix. If I were you I’d contact the vendor. If they’re rebottling I’m sure they’d like to know their mistake. they may even replace it and/or send you some freebees.

did you check inside the cap for the tip? might be stuck inside

Nope it was flat out missing. I just went and double checked after your comment. I kind of just wrote it off because I work in manufacturing and I know that no matter how good our cameras and optics and quality checks are, sometimes things manage to get through. But I'm curious about what you said about rebottling... Is that a common thing? Wholesale vendor buys a gallon and sells them in 15 ml they rebottle themselves? Is that why the sizes are different across the suppliers? Im new to this so I definitely don't have an understanding of the industry background. The supplier was river supply, btw.

Yeah, contact the vendor. rebottling is a common thing in this business. I don’t know all the details except for the benefit to us as most rebottled flavors can be sold cheaper than the retail price. I think there‘s some international laws involved as well which is why some flavors aren’t available in some countries or are sold under a different but similar name.

A list of some rebottlers.

this is more of the same.
