So for the past year i have been vaping a flavor called candybeca. In a kayfun 5 my cotton, and coil will only last 24 hours before all of it is black. At this point the vape tastes terrible. I have been changing my coil, and wick everyday for a year. I am sick of doing it. It has almost made me quit vaping. I hear about people vaping for a entire week on a single wick and coil. Is this true? Do these people vape all day? Like 20 ml a day. Or is this all nonsense. Soon i have to order from nicotine river and i thought id try new recipes. Specifically ones were i dont have to change over every single day. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Some stuff I've been thinking on for a while, bear with me as it's not just a "reduce sweetener" and... a bit long.
I've got a juggerknot mini that I vape for 3-4 weeks (15-18ml/day) before having to attend to the coil at all, sometimes just a rewick sometimes I put on a new coil - and this is with a very sweet juice. I also have an ammit 25 I can't go more than 3 or 4 days without rewicking, between both residue buildup in the afc and gunk on the coil making it taste burnt... with the exact same juice/consumption, wick and coil. When I was using my kf5 at home (at around 8-10ml/day), typically I'd be rewicking it after 5-6 days even with extremely overflavored/sweetened commercial juice. I also find if I'm switching between flavors without cleaning/rewicking gunking goes up even if either juice on it's own wasn't too bad. This all, by the way, is using 316L and TC.
I've come to the conclusion(s) that it isn't just the makeup of the juice that determines gunking... it's how the atomizer is designed (ie: strictly bottom air tends to leave the top of the coil hotter after you vape, cooking on whatever is there), how you wick it (if the coil is underfed, too tight in the coil or juice flow, the juice doesn't keep up with the heat), how hot you are running it (both wattage and coil specs), whether you sustain your pull after releasing the fire button to continue to cool the coil, and last but not least wicking material (ie: I found rayon was more likely to gunk the coil rather than the wick, while cotton would often have a long break in period it was more likely to get grimy before the coil. Aside from RDA I've been mostly sticking to bacon prime the last year or so, by how it acts it seems to be a blend of rayon and cotton.)
tl;dr: you didn't bear with me. There are many factors, including but not limited to the recipe, but yes it's very possible to get several if not many days out of a wick/coil.
This recipe comes from 2016 when tech was different. 10% of RY4 Double is a bit too much by itself. Yes there are recipes that will be easier on coils.
Right but do people really vape for 1 week without changing wicks, and coils.
Some of my recipes I can vape for a month before rewicking and burning off the coils, it all depends on how much sweetener and coolant is used, the less of it the better
Yes. I don't build my coils. Just a standard tank. But I don't use added sweeteners or coolant in any of my DIY juice, just fruit flavorings for that effect. I notice a huge difference on my coil and cotton when I get lazy and grab a store bought juice. If I vape only diy my store bought coil can easily last a month. When I go with store bought juice, a few days max. I usually go through a 60ml bottle in 3-4 days.
It depends almost entirely on the recipe / flavor.
To give you an example: I'm on a single flavor extravaganza. At the moment it's the good old Vanilla Bourbon by FlavorArt. And I've been dripping the stuff about 3 to 6 ml a day for about three weeks now, without changing coil or wick. Both look almost as good as the day I put them in the dripper.
There's other flavors that'll destroy any coil in less than a day. Your RY4 Double (and tobaccos in general) is one of them. And it's not even among the worst offenders.
You have *a lot* of it in your recipe. That's why your coils goes bad so fast and there's nothing you can do about it except change flavors.
Hi. You are vaping a tobacco mix @ 10% TFA RY4 Double. Tobaccos gunk up coils, there’s no way around that. Everyone I know that vapes tobaccos (mainly MTL) has to change their cotton and clean their coil frequently. And 20 ml a day is a lot of gunking. Most non-tobacco mixes without sweeteners are easy on the coils/cotton, but it also depends on how much eliquid you put through your cotton daily.
What do you diy and how long do your wicks last?
I diy cause I can make what I want, it's pennies on the dollar compared to store bought juice (≈$1/30ml), store bought juice is going to pretty much go away since the PMTA hit so diy is gonna be the way to go... I usually vape 15ml/day +/- and I make my own coils which I clean and re-wick about every 10 days on avg and change my coils about every 3-4 rounds. I use the standard 0.5% Super Sweet in all my mixes...
I pretty much leave my dessert and sweet tobacco vapes for just a couple of puffs for flavour as a treat. My ADVs are all fruity menthol now and yeah I do get a week out of my coils (I build so just change the wick then clean the coil after and wick and go again) , as a fairly heavy vaper I just couldn't keep coils/wicks going on dessert type liquids, would be pleasantly surprised if anyone has found a dessert/tobacco liquid that can take heavy vaping without gunking up
Any specific recipes that you could suggest that are fruit adv?
I've pretty much been on Red Astaire for aaaages now which I mix from concentrate. I am yet to delve fully into the world of DIY mixing so not the best to ask. But I think there's a few clone recipes of it. It is the best balanced, for my tastes, of menthol and aniseed but still very fruity
Rewicking is part of my daily routine. It gets to be a pain in the ass at times. But I've come to terms with the fact that it's just part of using rebuildables. it's still better than going through a new cartridge in a tank everyday. if I'm out and about hanging out with friends /family somewhere, not at home, and I burn up a wicking. Most friends and family have cotton balls at their house I can use to get me by until I do get home. If your coil in your tank burns up, your done till you get another one. And most importantly. I have to remind myself. It's way better than smoking. Although rewicking daily can be a pain in the ass and your wicking always seems to burn up when you're pressed for time and don't have the time to change it. They still have more advantages than disadvantages.
Avoid sweeteners
The candybeca recipe i use does not have any sweeteners
I rewick once a week and I totally agree with some comments that the design of the rta or rda really makes a difference in how your coils and wick will be I use the og juggernaut rta the intake dual the destiny rta and the rebirth rta and rda I have a few mods with different rda's and all of them are fine for a week of heavy use . I find that when I squonk the coils are in better shape than dripping though I enjoy building coils so I have no shortage of coils to install.
> I hear about people vaping for a entire week on a single wick
Like underwear, wicks should be changed daily for better aroma. Not because you have to, but because you can.
Coils should be cleaned by dry burning every time you rewick, and occasionally brushing off any remaining debris. With proper care, a good RDA coil can last until you get bored with it and decide to try something different.
That depends on the coil type. For example, with my simple Ni80 clapton coils dry-burning doesn’t help, the vape tastes burnt after that. Only changing of the coil helps. Only several times I felt I could use the same coil after dry-burning it (and it seemed to do with cleaner e-liquids)
Admittedly it's been a while since I've worked with anything but SS316L. Are you sure you're dry burning long/hot enough to completely burn off all organic matter? All residue should turn to smoke, leaving nothing but white ash that can easily be brushed away.
Kanthal lasts longer than Nichrome with dry burning and after the first round it seems like the flavor is slightly muted with N80 but I dry burn both my Ka and N80 about 3 rounds before changing... Just glow them until you see the gunk burn off, let cool and then rinse under water in the sink while using the cheap disposable mascara brushes that I grab from Ulta & Sephora every time my wife goes... They work great on coils and when they are junk just toss them and grab some more...

Here's a photo of mine after 4 weeks.
Juice is brownish to begin with.
I vape about 15 ML a day of my own juice. Just Flavors, PG, and VG (40%). Including a tobacco flavor.
I go about a month (often longer) before the flavor starts to drop off. Cleaning and rewicking doesn't work for me either.
I make my own claptons and use silica wicking.
My coils last me on average 3 weeks. I have 3 coils that I have kept swapping over for the last 2 months. I soak one coil in vodka (found this to be most effective) and use the other coil . Then swap again when it starts to taste funny. I chain vape most of the time. I use 2 sub ohm tanks on 2 different mods with different flavours in each. I also mix my own e-liquid with different ratios and nicotine levels.
I have just re-wicked one coil. Saw how to do that on YouTube. Link attached if you are interested.
I think at 20 ml a day on only one tank, I would be rewicking every day. That is a lot to ask. It looks like the wick in that kayfun is small and that makes the problem worse. I solve this problem by having 7 mods on my desk right now as I am typing.
I can vape 20-30mls a day for a whole week until I need to change the cotton, it really is true. But certain juices I'll need to change the cotton every other day, it depends on what flavors and how much sweetener is in the juice. Desserts with sweeteners are usually the ones that make me rewick more often.
