Flavour concentrates cause wheezy lungs and coughing
submitted about 5 years ago by n1ab

I've been vaping for 7-8 years now and lately I had to switch to flavourless juices.

I tend to go over 10-20ml juice a day with my single coil rda and I have absolutely no issues when not using any flavours however even adding 0.5% flavour i get the coughs and wheezy lungs (only in the evenings). I only use FlavourArts and have over 20 flavour concentrates in my cupboard.

Has anybody else experienced similar reaction to FA flavours?

I'm not really desperate to use flavours but it definitely improves the vape, however the most important for me is the throat hit which i get from nicotine (3mg).

It could be that I developed some sort of intolerance to the flavour additives as they are not really meant to be vaped or maybe its FA specific. I would be interested to see if anybody else is in my boots and had to ditch the flavours.

Only semi related but going flavourless is heavily underrated

Its nice to not stink up every area you're in, you save loads of money, and when you do have flavoured juices down the line you can taste them more

I get this from a lot of flavours that i vaped for years, like tpa cheesecake graham crust, normally buttery smooth last 6 months even 2% chokes me out, its happening with a bunch of my daily vape flavours but i assumed it was because i buy staple flavour in 500-1000ml bottles and making juice has slowed down so those flavours are getting old, almost as if they’re steeping themselves before mixing but i think its the creation of diacetyl, alot of flavours have the precursors that can cause diacetyl to form, compared to my diacetyl flavours its seems accurate in choking/coughing effects , i was gonna buy some new small bottles to try and see if its the same

Edit: i have asthma and when i was smoking 6-7 years ago they said i had copd and was gonna need oxygen so i switched to vaping and never looked back, only been the last 6 months or so this has been happening, causing me to vape only 1 recipe (mustard milk - 8% tpa vbic + 6% tpa strawberry), despite have daap in the vbic its doesn’t affect me but i go through vbic like water so its fresh

I'm surprised that the strawberry doesn't bother you as well. It's been reported that strawberry flavorings can do this especially TPA Strawberry Ripe...(Wayne did something about this I think on a live mixing when he talked about how TPA lists what's in their flavorings, not necessarily a video about it). I know my wife has this problem with strawberry in any vape. And sometimes at night she will wake up and cough. But then again we've both smoked for 20+yrs before switching to vaping...

I have asthma, and I'd say most of the liquid I've made in the last six years has been dominantly TFA Strawberry or FW Blueberry. No joke. I've gone upwards of 20% in numerous bottles. Haven't had any breathing problems or asthma episodes. I'm even pretty certain I contracted COVID-19 and was vaping all but one or two days. LOL

Only smoked cigarettes for two years before vaping became a thing, though.

You'll want to test your flavors individually, to narrow down which one(s) disagree with you.

The only ingredient that all FA flavors have in common is PG, which presumably is in your unflavored juice too so you can rule that out.

Thanks for the downvote, as i said i have over 20 flavours and I get the effects from all of them.

You didn't say that you've systematically tested them individually. Which specific flavors cause your issue, and do they all do so equally or some more than others? Also, does your unflavored juice have the same PG content as the flavored mixes you tried?

Maybe you got COVID and didn’t realize it. Many that were mostly asymptomatic have complained of long-standing minor lung issues.

The way OP described it I thought it sounded fairly likely that the issue would be related to their asthma, their vape &/or their juice. You make a valid point here though, I almost forgot we were in the midst of a global pandemic!

I've been vaping for 7-8 years. I have asthma.

I've only ever vaped DIY liquids containing 10-30% flavoring, and never mixed outside that range. I started using (80:20) (VG:PG) for the first couple years then switched to 100% pharmaceutical-grade palm-derived vegetable glycerin and have always used freebase nicotine. Almost exclusively has been 3mg besides the short period with salts where I was running around 36mg. There were many other additives in the flavorings and they typically contain PG already. Only purchased from three companies.

TFA, FlavorWest, Capella

Haven't had any problems, but I only go through approximately 5-10ml per day.

I've read through this topic and I really think it could be worth purchasing a super-concentrated flavour or two to try. Of course Flavorah comes to mind as they are made specifically for vaping vs. food grade concentrates.

Some of their flavours you can use below 1% and get a strong flavour. I would recommend "Two f*ing drops by SmokyBlue" this will blow your mind the taste at 1% flavour. I just think it's worth trying some pure, strong flavours at a low percentage (0.5-2%) versus 15-30% - maybe the ingredients in the flavours are irritating at the high percentage they need? (And that's pretty high at 15%, I haven't seen much at 30 except maybe in a pod) and you won't believe the flavour you can get at such a low percentage - for real! I was amazed.

I dilute a few FLV flavours @ a 1:10 ratio they're that strong. Where are you located? I'll never use all mine, if we're close, I'll send you a sample mate

Edit: Just wanted to note that I'm not trying to spruik this brand or product, this is purely based on my own experience. You never know these days😅

Very interesting, I was ahead of the DIY game a long time ago, but I may have to look into this. Always have just stuck with what I knew best... and at this point I'm only doing my orders once a year so I rarely end up researching anymore!

Different flavors can have extremely different qualities, obviously. Some flavors, I need one or two drops. Some flavors (ex: TFA Ripe Strawberry) can be at 30% and not be detected by some palates. I've never personally felt, or had anyone complain of irritation from a juice, which is great.

I feel that I have an understanding of which flavors tend to have higher concentrations among the three companies I use. The fact that I can be using as little as 1-2% shocks me, though. I'm typically mixing base flavors such as Ripe Strawberry with the more powerful flavors like cherries. Anything over 1-2% with certain cherries and you're basically vaping a terrible cough medicine.

You say FLV has higher concentrated flavoring? What are some examples of your favorites? I'm in Pennsylvania.

I'm having similar issues suddenly as well. Only thing that has changed is my VG base. So I was trying to get through the 1l of VG I opened. Same MFG as usual, just a new bottle.

I think I know what you mean, can you describe what your throat feels like when it happens? Is is only after vaping the flavours? How long does it last, does having a drink help?

I vape a lot of different flavours all the time and only occasionally do I experience a tightness deep in the throat after vaping, sort of in the place where you would feel hiccups, in between my collarbone and adams apple - that deep.

I guess there is an ingredient I'm sensitive to in a few flavours because it happens very rarely. I think I only really noticed it with FA Bano (Banana) SFTing that one and in mixes, as well as a couple of other mixes, might have been custard flavours.

Does this relate at all to you? I'd usually have a drink and it goes away, it's not a nice feeling, but it doesn't happen often enough to bother me. I think the SFTing is a good idea so you can skip on those ingredients :) as long as they are not setting off your asthma! then definitely don't purposely vape them perhaps... I hope you find a solution!

Some flavours/companies are just smoother than others. Tried any Flavorah? You can use these in such a low percentage which makes for a smooth vape a lot of the time :) good luck!

Does it start as a tickle in your throat? Like I said in a previous reply my wife gets this from time to time especially in the middle of the night (it wakes her up) but she did have asthma bad as a child (nebulizer) and most likely still has some form today. 🙁
