Looking to get started
submitted about 5 years ago by deadPhoenixSSBM

Hi guys! I was directed here from the vaping sub. I’m looking to get started with DIY but I’m not sure what I’m going to need.

I’m looking to make 100% vg juice with 3% nicotine. I would also like to start out with a few flavors. I’m thinking strawberry, kiwi, and watermelon, maybe cream as well so I can experiment with some basic recipes. What should I get to get started as well as keep going once I’ve made my first batches and where should I shop for supplies? If possible I’d like to never buy juice premade again, as I’ve heard doing diy can save a lot of money (and with the pmtas coming up it may be my only option anyways going forward).

Thanks in advance for your help, I’m looking forward to learning!

If you go to diy ejuice about section people have tirelessly laid out everything you'd need to learn to get started. There are guides on first timeflavors, equipment, vendors etc.

No worries. I did the same thing on mobile. There's a gold mine in there I've learned so much. Welcome to the community.

Here's my view on it as someone who started a few months ago.

Choosing flavours for first order is the most difficult part, everything else, i.e; scales, bottles, VG, are no brainers.

The actual process of mixing is dead simple as well, the hard part (or most time intensive) is finding recipes that can be an ADV or at least go in your regular rotation to replace commercial juice, that's when you stop having to pay for juice.

Go to all the flavours and ELR and search for recipes that you might like and note them down. You can base this on what you already vape, i.e; desserts, fruits, etc.

Start building a list of concentrates for your first order.

You'll see a lot of first order lists around, they aren't the be all and end all and some are quite focused on maximizing the amount of recipes you can make, which is fine but be aware of it and don't let that compromise your list. E.g; think twice before getting a flavour that doesn't really appeal to you just because it will allow you to try another recipe that doesn't really appeal to you.

Having said that, don't procrastinate on your list, you can always buy more concentrates.

Thanks for the reply!

That is actually exactly what I ended up doing. Made my first order on concentrates yesterday. I think I ordered like six. Luckily I enjoy mainly fruity stuff so I just ordered 6 fruits that I enjoy in pretty much every one of the juices I already use as an edv that I would also enjoy on their own if need be and I’m going to try to go from there. The concentrates are SO CHEAP that I’m not for seeing any problems with getting more down the road and building up a collection :D

I would still really recommend searching recipes in future as not everything tastes like it's name, but hopefully you can make up something you enjoy with what you got.

Just a note, PG helps carry flavor... pure VG is likely going to be different than what you think it will be.

I've heard this but I vape max VG and the flavour seems to carry just as well.

Oh yes I’m aware. I’ve vaped several 100% vg juices before from friends and such. Not as much flavor but honestly the higher the pg in the juice the more it irritates my throat so I’m looking forward to being able to (almost) completely axe it.

Are you sure it was 100% VG? Usually the flavour concentrates are dissolved in PG, so you usually cant get to 100% VG, but what they call 'max VG' which is the maximum amount of vg that is possible while still using flavour concentrate.

If it were true 100% VG there would be no flavour at all.

And yeah that is one thing I love about max VG juices. No sore throat in the morning. Sometimes when I vaoed 70/30 I would wake up feeling like I had smoked a heap of cigarettes the night before.
