Let’s talk about cakes
submitted about 5 years ago by aveMind

I’m exhausted. Trying to come up with a decent fruity cake vape, be it an angel cake, a white cake or yellow cake. Need this sponge-y feel, the mouth-lingering deliciousness, the multi-layered goodness of cake, cream and fruits (or fruty cream). Up to this moment, I’ve tried literally every cake flavor I could buy, and nothing tastes as imagined. Either the cake is non-existent from start (WF White Cake, Purilum Simply Cake) or it fades within a couple of hours (JF Yellow Cake). Do you guys have any advice?

Have you tried INW Lemon Cake? Its beautiful. I recently published one of my best recipes using it. Not very creamy, but quite fruity: https://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/3588084/ try it, it is good.

Funny thing is that just a couple of days ago I messed with Lemon Cake and that blueberry combo, but separately (it was supposed to be a blueberry icecream and lemon-pistachio cake, both failed miserably) I will mix that, thanks! One question, do you think FLV Blueberry is better than CAP Blueberry Jam in that mix?

I think they are very very different.

OOO Golden Sponge Cake and I just got some DIYFS Angel Cake V2, but I can't recommend that one yet because I haven't tried it, but when I do I can let you know.

I tried DIYFS Angel Cake (though I don’t know whether it’s v1 or v2) and it was disappointing, non-existent in the mix. Please let me know if you’ll have more success with it.

I have a really good new cake recipie I've been enjoying and tweaking for 2-3 weeks now. I tried to make it like this strawberry dessert my mom makes. I've heard it called Angels on a Cloud before. It's got strawberries, blueberries, and angel food cake. It uses thick cream cheese mixture with whipped cream mixed all together for "glue" holding the fruit together and torn pieces of angel food cake together. It's delicious, and I was proud how this recipie turned out on my first mix. Give me a few minutes to get back to my notebook and I'll post the recipe.

MB Classic Sponge Cake and MB Yellow Cake have been the most cakey cake flavours that I have tried. They are slightly more expensive than other brands though.

WF & JF both seem to substitute sweeteners in place of actual flavour. I cant remember the exact WF cake flavours that I have tried, but I remember it tasting of sweetened wax. As for JF Yellow Cake, I was expecting it to be delicious, but it was just AP + Sweetener, maybe with a bit of vanilla thrown in for good measure.

MB Cake flavours seem to have more depth to them, they are still both sweet (probably laden with sweeteners), but there seems to be a stronger, richer cake taste to them. The Yellow cake being moist with hints of lemon and anise. Classic Sponge is lighter, but still a nice thick vanilla sponge taste.

Thank you! Glad to hear I’m not the only one with such observations. MB is one of the few brands that is unavailable in my country, will order from overseas, then.

FA Metaphor. It might be difficult to find, but it’s the most convincing cake flavour I’ve tried.

And I’ve tried a lot. I’ve had a hard time finding something that even approached realism in terms of texture, flavour, layers etc. FA Metaphor is the real deal.

It’s a fruit cake with citrus notes, but they fade away around the 14 day mark, leaving a plain fluffy cake.

Thanks! I actually have Metaphor and it seemed to me that it was very close to INW Lemon Cake, so close I tried a mix of the both at once. Which % are you using Metaphor with? Any additives, like graham crackers or AP?

I tend to use Metaphor between 1-3%. It’s one of the first cake flavours I’ve come across that doesn’t seem to need help in terms of AP etc. to achieve authenticity, but that’s just my subjective experience.

It works wonderfully with cake additives like VTA Vanilla Buttercream Frosting and LA Cream Cheese Icing.

Thank you! Any other additives you might suggest for it? Like, other creams? Also, what fruits work better, from your experience?

Here's that recipe I mentioned in another reply. I ended up having to get to work and forgot to go back and post it. This is Angels on a Cloud:

INW Custard 1.75%

FA Custard Premium 2.5%

INW Cheesecake 2.5%

FA Blueberry Juicy Ripe 1.35%

FW Blueberry .75%

JF Sweet Strawberry 2.5%

INW Shisha Strawberry .5%

FLV Pound Cake .5%

Okay so some background is in order. The INW Custard/Cheesecake/FA Custard Premium block is taken straight from Silky's King Bling Vanilla Custard. That stuff is amazing and you can find the recipe on ATF. I've used this block in several recipes lately and it's excellent for so many things.

Next, the berries. FA Blueberry Juicy Ripe is my new go to. I can't get enough of the stuff. It stands up tall in a bakery and mixes well with damn near everything. It's the answer I've been looking for in a blueberry custard. This is almost a blueberry custard recipie, but the dessert it's modeled after is more creamy, thick with some angel food cake which is itself softer and more moist rather than dry. FW Blueberry to boost the Juicy Ripe a bit.

JF Sweet Strawberry and INW Shisha Strawberry is my favorite strawberry duo. It doesn't fade as bad as most, and you can taste for sure. It can be a little loud if not kept to a certain level. This seems to fit nicely around the custards while still pairing well with the blueberries.

FLV Pound Cake is the creamy, buttery cake that sets off the cream cheese part of the mix. I've tried subbing WF Fluffy White Cake at 2% which is high, but the mode with that was almost better from a cake perspective. It was drier and a bit more sense.

But...the crown jewel. It changes the whole thing, but turns out to be a damn fine recipe for whatever it is. I added TFA RY4 Double 1.25% to the same recipie I listed here, and it is fantastic. I can't get enough. I think next time I'm going to tone down the RY4 to about .5-.8% and use it to dry the thing out a bit. We shall see.

Please take this recipe, use it, enjoy it, tweak it, substitute it, and remix it. Just keep me posted if you try some stuff that turns out well so I can enjoy it too. Happy DIY'ing.

Thank you for taking your time to write down this recipe and the useful comments! It’s the first time I see Blueberry and Strawberry at the same time, usually it’s either of the two. I have WF White Cake, but my first attempts with it haven’t been promising. Maybe I can use FA Metaphor? And, what exactly is this recipe, is this more of a custard or more of a cake? Because from initial glance, looks custard to me.

I've tried to find a way to use blueberry and strawberry together some way and it seemed to play nice here. The Blueberry Juicy Ripe is the reason why. Other blueberries don't stand up to the strawberry normally. And the blueberry is still weak in this mix, but don't let the word weak make you think it means bad. It's there, just strawberry dominant. The original dessert doesn't have a whole lot of blueberries in it. They're more of an accent flavor anyway.

I've never tried FA Metaphor. By all means try it out. I'd say mix the recipe without that particular ingredient (WF White Cake) see what you think. Add Metaphor after the steep. Steep more. Go from there. I think the very first time I tried this I used WF Angel Cake or JF Yellow Cake in place of the White Cake. But neither was what I wanted. That 2% white cake tasted awful for a good 2 weeks so let it sit.

If you want some good bakeries you should really consider some WF flavours. I've had great experience lately with their bakeries and custards/creams lately. I'm really loving the selection. Getting ready to try some of the new WF Philadelphia Butter Cake. Mmmmm
