Real Flavors SC vs Regular concentrates?
submitted about 5 years ago by CourierKite

So basically I am working on a recipe for a simple oatmeal cookie flavor, and I am seeing Real Flavors Oatmeal Cookies as one of the best bases according to the Noted podcast. I am looking at recipes that use this flavor to guage the percentage I should use for testing/ mixing and I'm confused because most recipes call for the super concentrate which I cannot find and only a few call for the regular flavor. Does anyone have both of these flavors? Are they REALLY only different in the concentration? Ie would I be able to use the regular flavoring in place of the super concentrate if I adjust percentages? SC is recommended@ 1%-2.5%, regular is 5%-10% or 8%-12% depending on the website... Is there going to be any difference in flavor between the SC and regular? Would the SC just last longer?

I recently tried RF Oatmeal Cookie SC and didn’t quite enjoy the output. There is some hint of oats but the cookie is not evident, even at 2%, and I did try to substantiate it with some graham cracker. The idea was to make a honey-chocolate oatmeal cookie.

I'm basically going for a basic frosted Oatmeal Cookie you'd get at the grocery store in a sleeve package. Was going to use this, maybe some FLV granola and a cream of some sort. Had my eyes on the regular flavor of RF Oatmeal cookie and the sc with a slight interest in oats and cream cookie from Wonder flavors. I'm basically looking for a base.flavor that has a oaty flavor or texture. Once there I may even add some Cap sugar cookie to fill out the cookie profile. Best case I add this to simple sugar cookie and have a good base. I'm trying to make something SIMILAR to Tasty Vapors Frosted Oatmeal Cookies. They're going out of business soon and idk if Geoff will share his life's work :/ they had been approached to sell this flavor in the past and never did. I hope he puts his recipes on All The Flavors or something x.x maybe an employee will release the recipes . I am really curious which brands were around in 2009 to give me an idea of what he had available.

I believe most companies were using TFA back then, at very high percentages. Maybe it is a good idea to try RF Oatmeal Cookie SC with some Cap Cereal 27 and FLV Cookies & Cream, with FLV Frosting for the frosting part. Might be worth experimenting with adding TFA Peanut Butter for additional oatiness.

I was thinking TFA only because that's what I saw everyone going to back in the day but I'm seeing on noted that TFA oatmeal cookie was absent of oat

Interesting I also know that the company that bought RF was in the process of a huge warehouse expansion, and all the RF stock was still on pallets this was right before every country shut down. I don't know how that will affect orders of RF

SC is super concentrated 1-3% recommended. These are still available, but now they are called extracts on DIY's website. The regular Real Flavors are VG based and you need to use them at a much higher percentage, those are the ones at need like 6-10% depending on the flavor. No, I don't have both of them to test the difference, but you might be able to sub one for the other by just adjusting percentages, not really sure though.

Okay so basically the SC will last me longer? I'm in the US, is there a source I can find the SC on stateside? I can only find it out of the country.

For what it's worth the reason you're having a hard time finding RF here in the US is because RF was unfortunately going out of business a while ago and a Canadian company bought them.

I used to buy their flavors off of Bull City but since RF was sold they no longer stock their flavors. It sucks but it is what it is, if you really want their flavors I'm pretty sure you can buy directly from their website. The oatmeal cookie flavor from them is definitely a great one.

Can you possibly give me a url without the .com? XD I have been searching for days since I listened to the Noted podcast to no avail. My google searching skills are normally very sharp but I can't find the source of these concentrates/ extracts x.x I have a small order of CAP flavors from Bullcity Flavors on the way to break away from the Flavor Barn concentrates I have. X.x good kit for getting your mixing toes wet, bad concentrates for the most part.

Did you check out diyvaporsupply? If they don't have it, then I don't think that you will find it anywhere else in the US. Sometimes there's certain flavors that you can only get from other countries. I'm in the US and I order RF from Canada. I also order FA Kitchen Line flavors from UK. It just boils down to how badly do you want that flavor? Personally, I wouldn't use any VG based flavors because they are weaker and require a longer steep time.

Looks like I'm getting it from CA/ UK then

Note: Real Flavors SC are "extracts", meaning NO PG or VG. Make sure you take that into account.

Could you elaborate for what that means for a novice mixer? Like it won't count towards my PG/VG ratio or that they have properties different from average flavorings?

They've got different properties. I use the recipe calculator on ELR and for the each flavor you add, there are options for PG, VG and "Other". For RF extracts, use "Other".

That's not what they were when RF existed previously. Does DIY CANADA make them differently?

I don't know (I never used any of the originals). DIY-Ejuice told me they were extracts and that's how I have used them.

That's what they call them. I'm not sure why. They should still be suspended in PG, though.
