Am I the only person who hates Chubby Gorilla bottles?
submitted about 5 years ago by nizzoball

Every since the first one came onto the scene I hated them. The ldpe pre-cursors wer a pain in the ass as well but at least you could get the caps off, the fact that every damn thing comes in a PET chubby gorilla bottle is irritating. This is typically not an issue for me since I havent bought juice in years and my flavors mostly came from TFA which use normal screw cap bottles.

Then i recently bought a bottle of unicorn milk for nostalgia and some mothers milk to develop a clone for my wife, both 60ml chubby gorilla botttles. Ok, not so bad considering im gonna be using them to fill tanks, whatever. Then I post a challange trying to make a couple of my recipes better so I order flavors from BCF, all 30ml except 1 10ml bottle, ALL PET chubby gorilla bottles.

So, I tweak the recipe and come up with something I really like and want to make 32oz of so I order the flavorings from BCF in 4oz bottles. THEYRE CHUBBY GORILLA BOTTLES, wtf man. I have to use a butterknife to pop the caps to get a syringe in there or pour the amounts I need, why would I ever prefer 4 ounces of concentrated flavoring in a chubby gorilla bottle? I still like BCF, even though ive only ordered from them twice and will continue to probably order from them but at what level do the chubby gorilla bottles go away? 16oz, 32oz, a gallon? I hate these damn bottles. /r sorry

It's not an issue if you're mixing by weight and not mixing nearly a liter at a time... that covers 90% of the people buying from BCF ;)

but 4oz though? I can understand the 30ml being in that type of bottle. If im buying 4-16 oz at a time I gotta assume we're mixing bigger batches. Even by weight, those bottles squeeze like shit, if I had to squeeze 30ml of flavoring into a mason jar from that bottle i'd be pissed and my hands would hate me. Seriously, the pressure it takes to fill up a 8ml squonk bottle from one of them bottles is enough to make me not want to use them.

I agree when it comes to juice, I don't enjoy those bottles. But for flavors, I buy lots of 4oz bottles and mix juice for a bunch of people with them. Never been an issue ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

complete opposite for me. for filling smaller bottles like my squonk, chubby gorillas arent bad. For mixing a 32oz batch of juice though, not so much.

I buy them and don't have a problem. Have you tried gripping the base of the tip with pliers? Or use one of the capping tools meant to take tops off?

I'm gonna buy one of the tools on my next order, should lower my frustrations considerably

I have zero issues with a 4oz bottle and mixing with a scale. Why would you pour flavor into a Mason jar?

I mix batches of my ADV for my wife and I in 32oz glass mason jars and then we each have 60ml screw tip bottles we carry around to fill our squonks. The mason jars allow it to steep nicely, glass doesn't break down or go bad (with plastic mason jar caps). So when I mix, I generally do so 32oz at a time. Hence, mason jar.

I like PET bottles, chubby gorillas, or equivalents are usually pretty darn good once you find the soft spot in the bottle.

by Afro_Thunder69about 5 years ago

I hate them because as someone who reuses bottles, you can only press on that "soft spot" so many times before they start to crack or develop holes (and unleashing god knows what into your juice as it degrades with each squeeze). And you usually have to squeez SUPER hard when the bottle is half empty or less. Sure, I'm impatient but even when I tried being as gentle as possible with the same chubby gorilla bottle, squeezing in different spots to avoid developing cracks/holes, it still doesn't last more than a couple months and is just such a slow process to fill my Squonk.

So I ditched PET and got soft LDPE bottles. The drawback is I need a funnel to fill due to the narrow mouth when I didn't before. But that's it, I can squeeze as hard as I want on the same bottle and get so much more reusability, with no signs of wearing down. Needing a funnel once a blue moon is way more preferable to having to constantly replace PET bottles, and spending minutes with cramped hands trying to fill my Squonk once a day.

Whoa, cool. I actually spent a decent amount of time searching for wide-mouth ldpe bottles and idt I ever came across these, especially in 120ml that's awesome (though it's a shame you need to buy 100, I'd need like 5-10 max and they'll last me years lol. I'm not about to drop $50 on these when I have 12 perfectly good 50ml bottles lying around, not worth the convenience at this point).

Though also I wish I could see pictures and/or dimensions of how wide the mouth actually is, all the pics that I see are with caps on (I can't even tell what kind of tips they use, and they make no mention).

I've not had a PET bottle crack yet.

I have a few with creasing around the center, but that is a known quantity and doesn't usually affect usability.

I don't use LDPE because I often mix wayyyyy ahead of time and it is fairly permeable to air. Additionally, recipes with cinnamon or menthol will stick to the bottle and taint the next mix no matter how many times I wash the bottles

by Afro_Thunder69about 5 years ago

Might be because again, I usually tend to squeeze hard cause I'm impatient, and it takes literally a solid minute or two to get a 120ml chubby bottle to fill my Squonk when the chubby is like 1/4 full. But with LDPE I can squeeze my heart out and it's filled in seconds.

But yeah I feel you regarding them holding onto flavors, I haven't experienced it but I believe it (I usually stick to relatively similar flavor profiles and I don't notice if it happens). But alternately you could always just use separate bottles, when I recently bought LDPE's I got 12 50ml bottles for like $10 (and I've only used 2 so far in the past 6 months, 1 each for different recipes). But I've never gotten more than 2-3 months out of 120ml chubby's unless I was deliberately squeezing gently, they've all developed holes on me.

Agreed - after trying all the different bottles I've settled on 60oz PET C.G. style bottles, they are the least problematic for me. LDPE bottles tend to leak (where the nozzle meets the bottle) especially when I use lemon flavors ... and I use Lemon a lot.

Pick up some cheap ass washers. A pack of ten is like a buck. The ones I use (for 120ml bottles) are 3/8 OD 'Union washers'. Bam no more leaks. No need to use a gorilla's chubby any more. ;)

I have nothing against PET bottles. TFA, all of thier flavorings come in PET bottles but they have screw caps so I can easily get a syryinge for smaller mixes or pout it into a graduated cylinder for bigger mixes. With the BCF chubby gorillas, I have to use a butter knife to take the pointy part off and thats irritating

1 points

by Foment_lifeabout 5 years agoSeto Kaiba

I guess it's kind of annoying but you only have to do it once. I reuse chubby gorilla bottles, so I've gotten pretty good at popping those caps out with a pocket knife. I've never really felt it was an issue.

1 points

by nizzoballabout 5 years ago

I just hate having to pop them off when I dont see a positive to having a 4oz chubby gorilla bottle for concentrated flavorings. Mixed juice is a different story, I get it, even though I still dont like them for that, I get using them for finished mixes. But the concentrated flavorings you needs easier access to and having to pop the top off that stupid bottle every time is a step I could do without. I'd probably be less irritated with it if I thought it saved BCF money buying them bottles but having bought bottles wholesale before, I know a regular 4 oz PET screw cap bottle is cheaper than a 4oz chubby gorilla bottle at any quantity. So are they buying them for the flair or "street cred", showing vapers they're a "hip" company using the popular chubby gorilla bottles?

BCF has a "Cap Removal Tool" for $3. Add it to your next order.

Count your blessings if being annoyed by bottle caps is the worst of your issues for the day.

[Edit to add: I don't mean that last sentence to sound snarky]

Shall we all now collectively apologize for our first world privilege? 😨 (I did not just say that. Someone hacked my account. While I was doped up on sleeping pills. Yeah, that's it).

by nizzoballabout 5 years ago

Sorry, what I said wasn't meant to be a slam against you, I grammar'd wrong. I meant "oh I get it.(that your pointing out the smallness of my complaint was in jest). And then in a separate thought I was making fun of my first world problems, not trying to make it seem as if you were calling me out on my first world problems.

It should have said

'no shit, first world problems huh'. I was agreeing with your making light of the banality of my complaint.

It's also weird having the want to explain myself so I don't leave you thinking I was was trying to make fun of you or be an asshole. Wtf has happened to me.

They come with a cap removal tool, the cap. No seriously, check it out: https://youtu.be/2d9MdB2nN_M

Do they have them? I hope not but ive been out of the game a while. Seems like everything is chubby gorilla.

Jesus I hope not. That would just be obnoxious. I just don't like PET. I can't stand when my bottles get all creased and dented.

Use the lid to wedge into the tip, pops off super easy!

by Maxx_Jabout 5 years ago

I just (gently) bite the little dripper tip with my front teeth and pull. I get my bottles from LB and they come with the drippers and caps separate so the only time I need to re-open is when I refill the bottle. I could see how it would be annoying if you were constantly mixing and trying to adjust your percentages, though. Maybe just keep a pair of pliers on hand?

Hate them, caps are terrible for getting off and I have rheumatoid arthritis so they are terribly difficult to squeeze.

i like chubby gorilla easy to wash and reuse. mixin here by weight though

I hate eye droppers.

They're messier than squeeze bottles especially with smaller opening tanks.

If you transfer the juice from a larger glass bottle to a smaller plastic bottle the dropper is covered with juice and you just wasted a paper towel while transferring.

I have to disagree here. Despite their limited shortcomings, PET chubbies are far better than the 4 oz rectangular bottles BCF used to use. I batch 8oz typically, so I am not unfamiliar with needing 8 or 10ml of a flavor at a go. I'd just rather have the control the chubby bottles give over speed.

There is a trick to removing the dropper. I use a 6" metal ruler, slip it into the seam and twist, pops right off.

Modmaker sells a replacement cap that gives you a 510 squonk fill for the 30 and 60 ml pet chubby bottles. It's very nice and milled from steel. On the 60ml, it doubles as a handy improvised sapp if you find yourself in a rough part of town.

Never understood all the trouble getting those caps off - A paper towel and a finger nail works wonders.

4 points

by nizzoballabout 5 years ago

ive nearly pulled a fingernail off getting them off. I use a butterknife to get under it and kinda twist, it works most of the time but sometimes it goes flying and rolls across the floor. sigh. Thank god im not mixing for people anymore and dont have to maintain a lab.

Haha - I use a steak knife. My fingernails are so thin they would bend backwards if I tried to use them that way!

Are your bottles made of steel? I barely have to use any force to pop it off.

by mkweiseabout 5 years agoMissing One Flavor

For mixing in, glass dropper bottles are certainly preferable, but significantly more costly.

When buying flavors, I absolutely want them to be in convenient drip bottles so that I don't have to mess with disposable pipettes when mixing. There are only a handful of flavors I'd ever buy more than 30ml at a time of, though.

For my adv's, I buy 4-16oz bottles of flavoring at time. I mix 32oz at a time of those flavors so I don't have to mix them again for a month or so. They sit in my cabinet and steep and I take out what I need as a need it. When I fill up my last 120ml bottle, I mix another 32oz, by the time I need it it's steeped pretty well and ready to go. Been doing it this way for years. I'm not the type that mixes a hundred small flavors, I only really care about my ADV's.

Hi. I use a Chubby Gorilla bottle opener for the ones that ne opening once in a while (commercial juice). I don‘t open flavors because I also mix by weight. Here’s a link Chubby Gorilla Bottle Opener. There are many different brands available, that was just an example. Much easier than scissors or the old butter knife.

I just bought one of the tools from BCF. I think shipping came out to more than the product but whatever. Hopefully it will reduce my frustrations.

I have that tool. I find I can’t open the bottles with it. Total waste of $ and adds to the frustration. 🥴🤨
